Are you or someone you know planning to have Mohs Surgery to remove skin cancer? Or recently had Mohs surgery, and are concerned about the recovery and healing of it? In today’s videos I am at my 6-month follow-up appointment, to see my dermatologist, since my Mohs Surgery.
As well, I show how the healing of that area, where they removed the skin cancer, has improve over six months. During these six months I have video journaled the different stages of the healing, so please check out my journey through this whole recovery. I hope that sharing my experience & testimony of having the surgery, and the results there after, will encourage anyone who is having to go through it.

I just had Mohs last week on the tip of my nose. Today I had the stitches removed and so looking forward to the 6 month mark so I can look “normal” again. I appreciate you posting to see the progression! Praying you’ll have no more!!

Hopefully anyone who has to have Mohs surgery will have a great Doctor Who knows what he/or she is doing! That is definitely key! I would research a good doctor if you need to have the surgery first.

Wow looking at the progress, it looks like it’s healing great!... I always feel similar with body changes, it looks less impactful when I look at differences but everyone else notices them more since they don’t see the changes everyday.

You look good, and it will continue to look better. I got "scoped" by a deer rifle (too close to the scope and recoil made the scope hit my forehead) when I was like 13 and I had a small scar on my forehead for several years. It got more and more faint until it went away entirely by my mid-20s. But that was after I did absolutely nothing to it -- just wiped the little blood off my forehead and went on. I had MOHS surgery on my leg 3 months ago and the wound couldn't be closed surgically but it starting to close on its on. A hassle for sure, but its just a process. You made it and I'm glad it worked out for you.

@@ihssanzayla8794 Sure! The only difficult part was trying to find something to do between skin shavings. They take an initial sample, look at it under the microscope, and if cancer cells remain, they repeat the process until no cancer is left. Mine took three iterations, with about a 30 minute wait between each. I had a pretty aggressive tumor type, so my experience might have been longer than what most people experience (??) Not much swelling, and the pain was easily managed with ibuprofen. This surgery is extremely precise and will not affect your eye. My surgery was a year ago and I have no scar at all. Good luck with your procedure!

So glad your appointment is went well! It sounds like you’re doing all the things right. Have you also been eating extra fruits and veggies? I haven’t been through what you’re going through but a healthy diet helped me heal extra fast from my csection last year and I am happy to recommend some products that helped me boost that healing process & nutrients intake as well, if you’re curious at all 😍 Either way it looks like things are going well!

I just had the Moh's procedure on January 30th for a benign squamous cell on the left side of my nose. The area was 1.2 by 1.4 cm in size. The resulting incision made to loosen the skin so it could be pulled over to cover the area was about 3 inches long. The overall area is securely bandaged right now (end of Day 2) and is healing well. Aside from some facial swelling on the left side of my face and the general feeling of the tightness around the suture area, I am doing fine. Surprisingly to me, recovery pain has been minimal given the treatment area and the length of the incision. A 5 day antibiotic treatment was Rx'd. To handle pain / discomfort, my doctor told me to simply take a combo of 400mg Ibuprofen with 1,000 mg of Acetaminophen. I'm impressed that the combo has worked so well. The initial bandage change-out is tomorrow and the stitches will be removed early next week.

@@walkswithholly4610 Hi Holly -- thank you for the note back. I think most people can benefit from watching your video as well as hearing from others who've had a similar procedure. I'm continuing to heal without issue and earlier today, had the bandages changed out. Everything is going fine. Aside from the unsightly black stitch line from the roughly 3 inch long incision, things are good and, those stitches come out this Monday afternoon. So, aside from the likely redness and perhaps some minor tenderness over the next few weeks, I should continue to make a good recovery. I am very impressed by how well the combo of Ibuprofen with Acetaminophen worked to keep facial swelling and discomfort to a minimum. Thanks again for having documented your journey with Moh's.

@@walkswithholly4610 Quick Update: the stitches were removed this afternoon from along the roughly 3 inch incision line made during the Moh's procedure a week ago. The majority of the stitches were of the "micro" type (very fine thread). Virtually no incision line is even visible now. The treated area looks bit crusty (to be expected) but should clear nicely within a couple weeks.

I'm at month two - had 10 stitches on my upper lip. The scar is healing well. The surgeon has explained that the lumpiness is due to the internal stitches and that these will not be completely dissolved until about the three month mark. He's said it can take up to six months to soften up completely. I'm hoping the residual redness will go away too. At the end of the day though, this cancer had to go and I'm happy to be rid of it - so it is what it is!

I have the exact scar but it goes all the way to my eye. Yours looks great. I had to have a new lower lid. Mine is doing well too. I think the scar makes me look tough. Looks of make up works wonders

Not sure if you’ll see this. I am scheduled to have Mohs surgery tomorrow. I was looking at info about it and all the dermatologist websites talk about how great it is. I wanted real patient feedback! So I came across your videos. I’m a homeschooling mom of 4 also (my kids are older though), and I’m super anxious about my surgery because it’s on the tip of my nose. I’m not super vain but I’m worried about the reconstruction part and how intense that will be… can I handle it. Anyway thank you for sharing a real testimony of a Mohs experience.

Gretchen, thank you so much for sharing this! 💜 I really hope everything goes well tomorrow with your surgery, I certainly know what you’re going through as I was super anxious both times I had it done! Yes, I totally understand being worried too about the reconstructive part. I don’t even know what to say with it being on the tip of your nose, since both of mine were on each side of my nose. All I can say is that the body is an amazing thing and it is incredible how over time it heals. There are cases where they have to dig deep and plastic surgery is the only alternative. But I pray that’s not the case for you and that it will just be a line stitch, that is what I had and they both eventually healed. Again I appreciate your message, very cool to hear that you are also a mom of 4 who homeschools 😄

Hi Holly, I had my Mohs surgery yesterday. Took original bandage off today at 24 hours. The area is below my eye, next to my nose. Any tips on how to bandage for the next 3 days. I had Moh’s surgery 6 weeks ago ; but unfortunately got staph , so I’m still struggling to get rid of the staph and heal. Three rounds of antibiotics and 2 antibiotic creams later, I’m still waiting to heal.

Hello! 😊 I just now checked out your channel and I am very excited to watch some of your videos talking about health & wellness (and dieting). Fascinating stuff - that I would like to understand more about. Yes, my skin has healed up very well since my 2020 surgery. I still have a little bump (that only I can see) but it blends in well with the curve in that part of my face. I do still have scar if you were to look close (in person - it doesn't really pick up in my videos - plus I wear make-up and that hides it all!). I will have to check out your share as well about your Mohs surgery - glad you shared it! You are right it is important for us non-medical channels to share their personal health experiences. I wish you well on your recovery from your Mohs surgery 💗

Hello, I hope everything goes well with your up-coming Mohs surgery!! I don't blame you for being nervous - trust that you will have peace going into it and the outcome and recovery will be the best it can be! Thanks for the compliment on my skin 😊 I have dry skin - so I am big on keeping it moisturized. Once in the morning after I wash my face and alway right before bed. Sometimes I will moisturize my face in the middle of the day too. I alway use moisturize with spf now (but not the one I use before bed). Hope that helps 💜

Hey Nicole! Yes, it was the Doctor Who did the Mohs surgery also did the stitching. It always depends on the size of how much they had to cut open whether or not that doctor can just put stitches in. However there has been cases where it’s too big and they send the patient to get plastic surgery instead. so I can’t say for sure that that’s always the case. But it’s going to be best case scenario that they just need to stitch up the patient. I hope this was helpful. Thank you so much for your message. 💜

Holly, I just had the same surgery in the same place, with the same repair. Two weeks out, mine looks so bumpy. What did you apply to the scar after stitches and Vaseline? Did you put moisturizer on it, silicone tape, or something else?

Hi Andy, Sorry that you are having to go through this difficult experience of Mohs surgery. I only apply Vaseline the first few weeks - really until the cut all healed over. I always apply moisturizer both day and night - that might have helped. So if you don't use it normally use moisturizer - maybe add that both day and night. I know what you mean with the bumpy look - I had the same problem - however mine flatten out over time (maybe 8-9 months after the surgery). Please have hope in that! It will in time look go back to its original shape. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery!! 😊

Going through the same thing. I read somewhere it's also the dissolvable stitches that can take up to six months to dissolve completely. One day at a time!

Hello, you know at the time I was wondering if plastic surgery would be better for closing the wound - especially the first time I had Mohs surgery - however I trusted the doctor when they told me it would heal (with them stitching it up) and it did. I have a small scar but only I can really see it. Unless the Mohs surgeon tells you that you need plastic surgery - I would stay let the Moh surgeon do it. Most times they can close it up (if it is not to deep or wide). But you can always decide if you would prefect plastic surgery.

I had it almost two weeks ago on head what a ordeal. From mohs surgery my eyes swelled and forehead had squamous it was difficult I did hurt a lot. I get stitches out in Abt 3 days.

@@dedriapettus9637 May I ask how long you had the basal cell lesion before you had the Moh's procedure. I have Moh's schedule for the first week of Nov. Lesion has been there since pre-covid. And I'm quite anxious about it.

@@debrao4756 I had it for a couple a years, it would scab up & I would think it was healing then the scab would fall off & look fleshy colored! I know I waited too long so therefore they practically had to make a deep hole thru my nose! I ended up having two surgery’s but everything is good now! I’m healing very fast, some scaring but my surgeon is amazed at how good it’s looking! I’ve prayed a lot & had many others praying also! I massage Maderma cream on it every morning & vitamin E oil on every night! I’m sure you will be fine with your procedure too!

@@RosieRose1-k2t ...the growth looked like a purple pimple under my eye. The surgeon went in twice to get all the cancer out...and the incision is about 2 inches long

I just had this surgery 36 years ago on one side of my nose. I am supposed to start massaging it to make it flatten and heal better. They say to massage it for one year. Do you had any tips on this? Thank you.

Hello 😊 Yes, I had heard about massaging it to help flatten it out. I can't say it always works - I still have a little bump (right next to my nose) - 3 years later. But naturally the skin will tighten up and go back to being flatter on the actual nose arch. I will say that a lot of it has to do with how well it is stitched up by the doctor - I hope you had a good one work on yours! Getting Mohs surgery on my lower eyelid. It's basically touching my eyeball. Just curious, did they give you any meds prior to surgery? Like for anxiety or anything?

Fascinating and I applaud you for posting this for the benefit of all of us including me who has the same diagnosis but on my eyelid no less. My high risk activity is I have a boat and I use it to go fishing. By any chance do you know how large your lesion was before your surgery?

I'm so scared. I had my biopsy yesterday. I looked through my google photos. This spot started on my face, without me having any knowledge that it could be dangerous. It's been here for over 12 years. I'm afraid they're gonna chop my whole nose off.

Have faith in your doctor - or research a great doctor in your area that has the best reviews. I will tell you that my first ever skin cancer on my nose I first noticed in 2006 - but at the time I did not see a good dermatologist - they never biopsied it - and I went on thinking it was nothing for years. Then in 2011 I saw a dermatologist about something different and he ask to biopsy the spot - that is when I found out it was cancer. The Mohs surgery was intense the first time because it really did look like they took off 1/2 of my nose - but the doctor stitched it all up and that first scar (from 2011 surgery) is not even noticeable any more. The might have to do plastic surgery if they have to dig deep - hopefully though you will not have to. Best wishes to you as you move forward with this! 💜 I know it is such a pain - but better to get it fix than to avoid it.

You are not saying what you are doing to minimize the scar. Silicone gel? Allantoin? scar massage? All things you should be using/doing to ultimately and quickly minimize the scar.

The only thing I used to minimize the scar was Mederma (a scar healing cream). My dermatologist did not actually recommend it (or recommend anything really) but for peace of mind I used it the first year (months after the surgery), it might have help. I still have a scar but no one ever notices it because it is so small.

I just had Mohs surgery for a small cancer on my face, but what shocked me was how big the suture area is for the small section. I have to say I'm not very happy about that.

There is something about the way the skin will pull back in time and it should go back to the way your face once was. I know it is hard! I am getting close to my two year anniversary from my surgery and I still see a scar - but I only see it (because I look up close to it), no one else notices. Jimmy, I hope everything goes well with your surgery tomorrow! I would think recovery on your back would be a lot better than right on your nose. Hi Anita - I used Vitamin E ointment. But honestly I don't know if it help?! My dermatologist said I could use it but he did not think it was going to make a big difference when it came to the healing. All I can say is I am going on one and a half years now since that surgery and the scar is really faded. It is hard to wait - but thankfully it does clear up over time. Hope that helps!! 😀

I knew something wasn’t right with the way my skin kept peeling Several months before I had the biopsy. The dermatologist could not tell it was cancer, in fact they told me they really didn’t think it was. The biopsy was peace of mind, unfortunately it showed the truth.

@@walkswithholly4610 Thanks Holly for the video. It does help to see your recovery. My original dermatologist told me mine wasn't cancer. It was just a line and a little flakey and then got larger and formed a T and is was scaly. Went to a different dermatologist who recognized it immediately as cancer and biopsied it. I'm anxious because it's been there so long and because it's gotten larger. It's very near my eye, sort of the lower eyelid skin.

I'm at 8 weeks since my surgery...got about a nickel-sized puffy red scar on my chest. It feels like it's been a lot longer, but I have trouble keeping track of time. Hopefully this means there will be much more progress in the healing. I mean, I have plenty of scars so it wouldn't be the end of the world to have another. But it would be nice if it healed. It's still very sensitive, like freshly-burned skin that's just healed. Not an open wound anymore though so that's a plus.
