The way the Skina tortured its victims over the years reminded me of the AM supercomputer from I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream that could alter reality to torture humans for thousands of years. Now thinking about it, this seems like a prequel to the book.

I really loved this film. I was a child about the same age as Kaylee in 1995. To me, this film felt incredibly nostalgic. It reminded me of the fear I felt as a kid waking up at night, alone, my parents asleep or away from home. The weird shapes I would see in the darkness after waking from a nightmare. The confusion I would feel for simply not being old enough to understand what was happening around me. Skinamarink felt as if someone took my old memories from childhood and made them into a horror film.

I think this film can best be summed up as horror ASMR. Credit for doing something VERY different. I can see this being examined by film lovers from an artistic, experimental standpoint. But you were right, this asks A LOT of the viewer. I can see future directors taking aspects of what works in this, and polishing what doesn't for a mainstream audience.

I've never had a movie that left me feeling like the jumpscare was gonna come after the movie just ended. If you stare at the face at the end for the whole scene, when "The End" pops up, you'll see the face everywhere you look because it just burned into your eyes. Never experienced an atmosphere like Skinamarink's. Genius film.

The moment "freaky deaky" just puts leaving through his own death over and over and over again was the most horrifying for me ( the scene with the blood on the roof coming and going) Atleast that's my interpretation of the scene. I was talking about it with a friend, and I described it as "Divisive but in the good way, like '77 Suspiria." Not exactly in the way someone would assume, from that description, but like... It is very much Doing A Thing. You may or may not like the Thing it's doing, and if you don't that's valid. Most people won't, and it knows that. But it sure commits all to heck to the Thing it's doing and even if it's not *your* thing, you kinda gotta respect its commitment, yano? It is exactly what it wants to be. That takes some guts these days, to not care who it alienates, chasing its goal. It's gonna be a cult classic in ten years. That cult will be small but very intense.

As someone who has a fear of the dark related to childhood trauma and was afraid of my house at night, this movie was indeed a bit long, but it left me feeling uncomfortable. It was a strange sensation like a crushing cold dread and a weight in my chest. It brought me back to the moment when I stared down the long dark hallway in my childhood home knowing that there was something watching me in the shadows as a child while I decided if I should run or walk as quietly as possible to my room to hide under the blankets. In the end, it's either going to be a good experience that'll remind you of childhood fears or you'll hate it and find it silly and dull. There's no in-between honestly.

I NEEDED this review!! I finally rented and watched this movie today. I either love or hate this movie but I’m not sure which one. It felt like it took 8 hours to get to anything but at the same time I didn’t want to blink. I had the volume turned up to a ridiculous amount and still struggled with a couple points. With a couple tweaks I think this would have been absolutely horrific. I just wanted a little more of the last half hour and a little less of the build up because too much build up left me falling asleep in my chair a couple times. Luckily Amazon comes with a rewind button. I’ll absolutely watch it again and I’m excited to see more stuff from the creators.

Fortunately it wasn't nearly as hard for this one - Jurassic World: Dominion took like 5 hours to caption, because the auto-transcription "Kept. Making. Every. Single. Word. A. Sentence." The hardest part to fix in the auto-transcriptions for Skinamarink was that it kept thinking the movie's name was something like "Cinema rank" and couldn't figure out if it was Kaylee or Caylee.

I went into this film knowing the premise and nothing else. The theater it was playing in was completely empty except for myself and this really ratcheted up the horror for me. The way we're never allowed to get a good look at anything, the film grain distorting ordinary objects into sinister presences, the crispy audio quality, it all lends to the overall atmosphere and it is horrific. Overall, the fact a film this avant-garde played in fucking AMC Theaters is amazing. A true win for indie horror. I cannot recommend this enough.

I heard interesting interpretation of this. The movie is form kids perspective. Kid falls down the stairs and rest is in his head as he's in coma. The disappearing things/faces are related to his mind going. The blood is his surgery. After 500 days he passes away (going to sleep). This fits all the wierd things.. and makes the story even far more disturbing...

This movie fucked me up. For me, it made me think about what dying must be like. To have your soul/consciousness slowly drift off into oblivion all while being terrorized by an entity that could be construed as death itself or an entity of a similar nature but one that feeds off the souls it takes. And the longer it feeds the less of you exists. And in the end, that last little piece of you is told to "go to sleep" as you finally fade out into oblivion. Totally aware you are slowly blinking out of existence. Fuckin terrifying

So excellently reviewed, as usual! And I will definitely take your recommendation and will try again with a coffee, headphones and no lights. 😁But no matter what, I am absolutely in support of the experimentation and the creativity, and I definitely want more art to make its way back into the corporatized film industry. People say all the time they want something different, but when it comes along, many are so quick to ridicule it and stone it, which just enforces more of the same and spotlights how trained we've become to hate films that depart from the formula.

This reminded me of the several nights I spent as a child either being unable to fall asleep or waking up in the middle of the night from a nightmare or just because something made a loud enough noise. And the long terrifying forever purgatory of being in the darkness in limited light from a TV or a night light. And how the night makes the house far more terrifying, with all the noises from outside or inside you normally don't pay attention to during the day becoming increasingly noticeable. You don't know what's around you, and fuck if something actually does start moving. And as a child there is no concept of time. So you are just waiting and waiting and waiting for you to finally fall asleep or that the sun comes up and your parents are walking around.

Watched this in the cinema and loved it, was the most tense I've been over a horror film in a long time, though there was a guy snoring through part of it and someone watching (rightfully) stormed over to wake him up. In light of that gotta agree best way to watch it is alone in a dark room with no distractions

Definitely unique. I wouldn't say it should have been 10 minutes, but 70-80 minutes. I watched it as you described and it does add to the atmosphere, but it could have been cut down to maximize the suspense. I believe that our empathy with the children is one of the big reasons it's able to maintain the suspense for so long.

What Decker says at the start is 100%, you need to go into the movie with the intention to focus and enjoy what it will show you. Having watched it alone in my room with the lights off, it is one of the best horror movies I've seen all year. Other have said it, but it really takes you back to when you were a kid, how the dark seemed like this super scary place, how waking up in the night to go to the bathroom was a test of courage, on which every sound sounded like something otherworldly. Of course, in the case of the movie, things get really scary once you realize the kids are not imagining things, something really is out there to get them. Not many will like it, but I absolutely loved it.

This movie is the first I’ve ever seen to accurately describe my nighttime anxiety as both a child and even today. Staring at the dark corner of my room, getting up and walking through the dark abyss of the hallway at night and the odd random noises you hear at night. As a child and an adult, I’ve always found it difficult to articulate these feelings. It’s nice to know that I’m not alone and that i can help explain it to people with this movie.

I'm a guy who likes experimental movies. But I loathed this one. Experimental is cool. But it still needs to have things happen. This movie had nothing happening. I was mildly disturbed for the first 30 minutes and then realized it was gonna keep going like that for another 70... and my brain just stopped being scared. It's kinda like nightmares for me - if they seem to go on long enough I step back and say "well, I may as well go with this since it's not gonna hurt me".

So I first watched this film the day it appeared on Shudder. A friend told me it was the most boring thing he'd ever seen and that literally nothing happens... Which oddly peaked my interest! And from the synopsis and the reviews barking on about how unique it was I decided to give it the benefit of a doubt. Bare in mind, I had no idea the kind of film it was and assumed it'd just look like a regular film and playout like a regular horror. After about 30 mins I couldn't take anymore and baled. The film played on my mind for a while after that though and I felt compelled to try again. The second time I found it a really compelling (and at times terrifying) experience because I went in with the right mindset and understood the kind of experience It's going for. It honestly felt like the kind of thing teenaged me would discover at 3am when I couldn't sleep. TV barely audible. I kinda appreciated that somehow! I think the expectation you go into this film with can really make or break the whole thing for you. And that we should appreciate unique films for daring to exist, even if we loathe them

Algorithm chose your review of the new Jurassic World movie. And what the hell is up with the algorithm constantly pushing nastalga critic videos after Decker's videos when I keep telling RU-vid I'm not interested in his content.

I REALLY want to like this movie, but the length made it a chore to watch. That being said, I hope more movies like it get made, because we could really use some more fresh ideas in the horror genre.

You actually have good videos that review a lot of good films. Some films I like, other films, not so much but I'm just being honest so please don't take that personally. But I'd love to know what do you put in your hair that makes it so gorgeous? If that's how your hair looks naturally, then you are blessed.

I wonder if our focus would be held more fully if Robbie Coltrane disguised as a nun appeared in the movie. Like in 'Nuns on the Run' (1990). Sadly we shall never know. The horror...

I'm going to set down my collection of 4-sided Magic Missile dice next to the Lego just outside the door. I'm sure nothing bad will come of this.

There's a pretty good middle-ground between 10 minutes and 100. They could've shortened it to a good 45, even 60 minutes and it would've been acceptable.

think the purpose of the film grain is to simulate how we actually see in extremely low light. I mean, I at least thats how I see when its really dark and my eyes have adjusted to the near blackness

A movie you have to review is the inkeepers. It’s the most corny B rated spirit Halloween prop movie I have ever seen.
