Great stuff. My favorite band. That slight step back that you notice between Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse and Cleanse, Fold & Manipulate was well-perceived on your part. With Mind, the band had mastered their analogue workflow, but on Cleanse they made the switch to using MIDI instruments, so there was a learning curve on the album where their reach sometimes exceeded their grasp. As you can tell, by VIVISECT VI they had mastered their new process. Also, Mind:TPI was my introduction to the band, and you're not alone in holding it as one of the standouts in their discography.
You kept my attention for the whole vid. I am impressed. Thank you for taking the time and care on a band that many people hold dear to their heart. Heck. I am wearing a Skinny Puppy hoody as I write this at my office desk. Yes, I have a cool office. I applaud you for not being pretentious and giving a crap. You actually listened to the discography. The first time that I heard Skinny Puppy in 1988 was from a friend trying to jump-scare me. They were not expecting me to actually like it. It was VIVI Sect VI. I borrowed the tape and took it to work with me. I had the coolest job around. I worked for the local cable tv company. I would play local commercials on ESPN and CNN every 15 minutes. Manually breaking the signal with a switch playing the commercials at night. We did this in a 10' x 10' CMU building filled with satellite encoders. Red and green lights surrounding me in the racks of equipment. 2 Beta VCR players and a TV with every channel. I would turn out the lights and bathe in the digital glow of the decoders. Plug in my "Boom Box" and hit "play". Skinny Puppy was blaring and thumping. Open the door to the outside and it is just lush NW forest and giant satellite dishes. There was nobody around at my remote location on the mountainside. I could be as loud as I wanted. I was changed by that tape. This confluence of technology and nature was perfect. After all of these years of listening to these recordings, I find myself listening to The Process the most for some reason. Too Dark Park is the best, of course. There is way less guitar on Rabies than people complain about. The non-Ogre vocal songs on Rabies are my favorite. "Dry Cracks" They are so epic.
Mate....Puppy has been close to my favorite band since I heard them first in 87-88. I was 12. From my point of view you did a perfect review of their albums. Top work.
Great job! I’m a lifelong SP fan. Nice to see the younger generation experiencing their music. For me too dark park and last rights are the pinnacle of industrial.
This was good. I was first introduced to Skinny Puppy at age 18 with "Bites" and their music and the music from the side projects and related work isn't something I keep coming back to... because I never stopped listening to it. I appreciate your review of the albums because it's interesting to see other people's takes.
Nice work! It is fun to see as a fan of Skinny Puppy for over 30 years, that you also gravitate towards Too Dark Park and Last Rights, which I consider their masterpieces. I think it is awesome you went into this with an open mind and willingness to listen. I suspect you probably are familiar, but bands like Boards of Canada, Lustmord, Aphex Twin, T.A.G.C., might also be palatable. And if I can throw my own hat into that ring as well, you might even find my music tolerable. 😁
Wonderful assessment of one in my short list of favorite bands. Any entry point is challenging but like a good book you always find something new and compelling in the work. Unfortunately Last Rights was just that. Everything that followed seemed flawed to me (sorry SP to be harsh). But I really appreciate that you took the time to listen and found positive aspects of the latter phase. That said the GWOTR tour in 2004 - 5 was stellar and IMHO their best live show. I truly hope younger listeners keep appreciating the puppy. And this video and your insights give me hope and make me so happy. You said so many things about SP that I couldn't put into words. Respect.

Thank you for making this video, skinny puppy is definitely my favorite band of all time!! It’s interesting how my favorite skinny puppy albums are also mind: the perpetual intercourse, too dark park and last rights. There’s just something particularly haunting about last rights that it’s hard to put your finger on. I’m also not too fond of the process, but I keep coming back to candle for some reason. I also really like some of their less well known releases, like back and forth 6 and back and forth 7, or that mix they did for a radio station. And can’t stop watching recordings of their live performances, I love the over-the-top horror/slasher movie stuff, and it’s always such an intense experience. For some songs, like for example chainsaw (a personal favorite) I actually almost prefer the live version to the original… or maybe I’ve just gotten too used to relistening to the the original version all the time, who knows.
The first 2 Download albums has arguably the best and final work of Dwayne Gottel. They were made inbewteen the recording of the process and its release. Highly recommend. Totally different beast then skinny puppy.
I loved this video! It surpassed my expectations and I’m really glad you enjoyed listening to them. A (very) small part of me was a bit worried that you wouldn’t like them and listening to them would feel like a chore, but I’m glad that was not the case :) It really shows that you did your research and that you worked hard on this one (nice font btw), and I even learned some new things from this video. I didn’t know that Dave worked on Call Me Maybe, for example! 🤣 Our opinions on the records are very similar, but I’m a bit more fond of The Process than you are and somewhat less keen on Mind. I totally agree with you that tgwotr feels ”Ugli” in it’s presentation, and I too didn’t like it that much when I first heard it, but I got over it after a few listens and it’s been growing on me steadily. You should be really proud of this video and I’m looking forward to whatever you decide to put out in the future! I’m glad I could expand your ”musical horizons” in a similar way that your channel did for me. I discovered Autechre through your channel so I’m happy I could return the favor :)

The Process started out hard for all of us puppy people... but after some time & listening to it again and again, The Process has become one of Puppy's best albums to a lot of us. It doesn't overtake Too Dark Park or even Last Rights... but I love The Process!
As an old man... Completely in love with this kind of music, I have to admit that I take my hat off for a youngster like you daring to dive in to a band like Skinny Puppy... send me a message if you want to dive deeper in this kind of music, because this is only the tip ofe the iceberg ;-)

**Also, this made me very much appreciate the band even more than I already did. I got to go through their discography myself in-between watching your video and alot of tracks I used to just mark as "filler" and noise, giving them a 2nd chance. Seeing them live, in either 2008 or 09' , was very impressive. Deadlines live is just 🤌 One of my favorite bands ever, nothing out there like it
Pushing faces through sharp, cold glass... definitely your typical ballad lyricsa 😂😂😂 Sadly i just missed them on the TDP tour, but i was able to see them with Dwayne on the Last Rights tour at least. As well as 7+ times since!
'Too Dark Park' is amazing. My second favorite would be 'Bites' followed by 'Rabies.' Never really could get into Vivisect, its too chaotic and jumbled.
right, so icebreaker did indeed originally come from bites, and when it was added to remission they created the track manwhole (which you spoke of at 2:58) and it's basically the same intro except it becomes a different song, so I think the made it as a kind of "reimagining"
You missed 1 very big important issue The Process had, which is why it sounded so disjointed. The band was fighting, Ogre left the band at this time, having drug related issues, and they signed with American Recordings. American Recordings wanted to change their sound to be less "Skinny Puppy", and to structure towards an accessible NIN sound. Which they were fighting trying to not go down that direction, with all the other chaos going on in the background.
Wow, when you take on a project you stick with it, pretty cool. I love Puppy until Last Rights (their magnus opus) The Process was still ok in parts (just the typical industrial metal ablum of its time) everything after that is unlistenable to me and just horrible. They degenerated from an intelligent, ultra-innovative monolith to a toddler band and clown theater group, and the musical and verbal garbage got worse and worse with each album.
and Dave Rave was never in SP, he is a producer........He produced Carly Ray Jepsen and other bulls*it, but thats off the point.......point is you are clueless......
Sorry, your review is not complete........You have not done proper and diligent investigation.......Had you peformed proper diligence you would have also listened to every song backwards.........You don't understand Kevin Ogilvie or Kevin Crompton until you do......
That's incredibly true. Dave Rave Ogilvie has a channel of his own. On his channel, he breaks down everything from sample sources, production gibberish from the gitgo. Fascinating and Kool stuff. Be prepared, the man is pretty intense.
