All killer, no filler. This debut collection of 8 short stories from Yoon Choi just completely blew my mind and knocked my socks off. Easily my favourite read of 2021, a wonderful way to cap off a great year of reading, and kick off a hopeful year of booktubing for 2022. Skinship is a solid buy.

I just started this and your stories are going to make it so much richer. My mother in law came to the US after meeting my husbands father during the Korean War. She became a hairdresser and got a loan and opened her own salon. She was able to bring over 8 of her siblings. They always started living in her home and they eventually opened a market and deli that employed them. My husband either shared a room or slept on the couch depending on how many family members were living with them. She is in her late 70’s and is still running her own salon and works almost every day. Thank you for sharing your story. I don’t know how anyone can just forget about their sibling. I know there are so many similar stories of families ripped apart.

Thanks for sharing your family's stories as well! I love hearing them and I hope you enjoy the collection as much as I did. There's a lot there on resilience and that matter of fact doing the thing that needs to be done.

I love your reviews and have found many gems through your recommendations. Ordering Skinship from the library today and looking forward to reading it. I have been reading more Korean and Korean-American authors since becoming a fan of a certain K-Pop band.

I do wonder how many Korean authored books this certain K-Pop band has indirectly managed to sell over the years, their influence cannot be underestimated it seems!

Wow 🤩 You should write a book about your family! My mother died in 2020 (January 15th) she traced her father’s family back to Inch Island in Donegal. 2 boys of that family went to Canada in 1847? and we’re never heard from again.

It's just so hard to squeeze anything out of my folks though, they're both very reticent about talking about Korea - I thought for sure they'd be more open with my daughter too but tend to stick to the basics.

Around the 8:50 mark you name Tom Cho as a Korean American author. Are you sure Tom Cho is Korean? I'm pretty sure they're Chinese. See "The Transformative Self in Tom Cho's Look Who's Morphing" by Wataru Sato.

Thank you for your review. I am Half Korean and have been searching for good literature by other Korean Americans. My mother and grandmother had a very poor and difficult life in South Korea. I greatly appreciate your review and guidance in this endeavor. I recently read “Crying in H Mart” and it hit me very hard and very specifically. Thank you so much.

At the time there was sentiment that North Korea would become the Korean ideal with the potential to be an economic force - of course you don't go over and decide oops I've reconsidered.

Okay I am going to pre-order the paperback of Skinship right away. But just watch: some time this summer I will make a video about it and I won't remember who made me bought it LOL. Please chime and and take credit where it will inevitably be due. Great video!

Unless you're neck deep in Koreans out where you are I think it might ring a bell when you finally get around to it. Seriously can't wait to see what you think of it because, as Ducks, Newburyport reminds us, our tastes can diverge.

Ha! You just described my childhood. Born and raised in LA, father worked in a liquor/convenience store 24/7, forced to go to a Korean church filled with cliques until I was a teenager. I'll definitely add Skinship to my tbr. It's Korean, and not Korean American, but if you're into light horror, I can recommend the excellent short story collection Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung and translated by Anton Hur. One of my best reads in 2021
@ThePoptimist
@ThePoptimist 2 года назад
Thanks for the Cursed Bunny recommendation - will definitely have to check that one out! I always wonder how different LA Koreans are from East Coast Koreans. I know growing up my brother and I were the only Koreans in public school and it wasn't until highschool that there was another Korean at my school.
