Disorientation: When Fact is Stranger Than Fiction

In this crazy mixed-up world getting satire right is hard, if not downright impossible. Elaine Hsieh Chou's debut novel Disorientation still manages to thread that needle and prompted a ton of reading to dig up the real world sources of some of the wilder plot points discussed in the novel. Worth it.
Trying out a new setup which means some blown out lighting, wonky focus glitches, and some iffy sound capture that required a bit of effort in post. In the meantime send me your recommendations for Amsterdam, Haarlem, Delft and Frankfurt! (Less museums and galleries)

This just shows how background knowledge and reference points can add to a book. Great video and I think I need to learn more about Satire (not something I'm confidentin recognizing).

Your video review was great and far better at talking about the book without spoiling the Xiao plot point. I brought a lot with me to this reading so it's going to hit different that's for sure!

If this book is half as interesting and thought provoking as all the fascinating rabbit holes your discussion of it has taken me down, I can't wait to get my hands on it

Chou shows her notes too - there's an extensive set of footnotes that accompany the text at the end if you're curious for some other deeper dives (and there's a lot if you're willing to dig)

Disorientation is a total banger! Some of the best character development I've read in a long time.

Other folks argue that Ingrid's growth is too slow and fumbling but I thought it just right.

It's wild how much of it is based on fact! (though maybe less than surprising)

Fantastic review as always. My daughter is also headed to Europe next week for the first time. Hers is a two week vacation with girlfriends but they will be hitting Amsterdam and Germany as well.

I envy your Netherlands stay. I almost didn't come home from my trip to Amsterdam. If classical music is at all a draw, The Concertgebouw is a gorgeous hall and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the best in the world. Also had a wonderful visit to the Amsterdam ArenA to watch Ajax FC. The museums and galleries sell themselves. 😂

I'm really looking forward to it as it will be my first time in Europe that isn't just a cobbled together day or two at the tail end of a business trip. Once again letting the kid run the show so it's less museums and galleries and more hiking and biking around - but I think there's time enough for everyone to see something.

I think it's the toughest thing to pull off, especially in writing - it's never going to work for everyone but when it does I truly do appreciate it.

(1) The guy pretty much revealed his own background when he talked about his daughter's going to South Korea and to Germany/Netherlands to explore the German/Dutch side of the family, implying that the daughter was a mix of a European-descendant mother and an East Asian-descendant father. (2) I finished the whole novel in a week, more or less, with highlights and annotations; and I am not impressed at all with the work. In short, Ingrid Yang has been transformed from a cardboard cut-out of a white-worshipping self-hating Asian woman to a cardboard cut-out of an American liberal ideologue. Plus, the other characters were so shallow and poorly developed with badly written dialogue that the whole novel became a real-life example of John Smith's play in the book, and that Elaine Hsieh Chou became the real-life version of John Smith in the novel, catering to the American people's expectations of China and of East Asia.
