Easily one of the most important electric cars of 2021 purely on account of the fact it’s one of the cars the VW Group plans to beat Tesla with, and it’s pretty cheap.
The Enyaq is a family SUV that’s similar in size to a Skoda Octavia Estate, and yet costs considerably less than Volkswagen’s new ID.3 hatchback. Even more unbelievably the ID.3 is also considerably smaller.
Prices kick off at a frankly amazing £30,450 and just like the VW ID.4 SUV, there will be a variety of Enyaqs - 62 and 82kWh batteries, two- and four-wheel drive models and there'll even be a hot vRS version.
So, is this is the electric SUV we've all been waiting for? Ginny Buckley finds out.

I appreciate Ginny and the Electrifying team saying 0-60 times don't really matter to family cars. It's so wild that EV manufacturers always seem to focus on that one metric.

Exactly, Family Car. I want a comfortable car with enough space for the odd Costco bulk buy shop, or trip to the local refuse tip/dump. My 'faster' car is for those weekends where you can have a spirited drive at moderate speeds. Does it accelerate fast enough to make me feel good; yes. Is it faster than most 'ordinary' cars; yes. But I don't care. Could I have a Porsche for what I pay for the two cars we have, yes. But I would feel like a twat trying to fill it at Costco, or arriving at the tip...

Got mine just under a month ago after a very long 16 month wait. Worth it. We got the iV80 Sportline with just one optional extra. It is worth noting you can at any point now, pay £270 to enable adaptive cruise control permanently even if you didn't originally order it. We also had three different passengers time the 0-60 in normal mode (not sport) and it does seem to vary based on state of charge. With a full charge and a warm battery 6s is achievable according to all three front seat passengers taken. I guess the number must be an average over all stages of the battery cycle. 6s is more than enough for a car of thus size and weight... not to mention it will chow down on your battery life! Love the car, even as a self confessed petrol head. The only things I really miss are the occasional bit of engine noise and the quick fill ups. That said, it is so quiet inside even at 70mph I can have a quiet conversation with my passengers as if we are all sitting on the sofa at home saves the ears! Charging wise, I have notbyet used an ultra fast charger as we have very few round here yet. I suspect that with the 125/135kW chargers as standard now that should improve things. The kids all love it, three across the back no moans about space, the wife even seems impressed too. And that boot space... being able to so a full month food shop with the entire family in tow again for the first time in 10 years (that car was a 1988 Volvo 740 estate for comparison) has been a joy, not to mention a money saver with bulk buys and the free low speed charge whilst we shop at Asda. Thumbs up from us.

I have been excited to see this review, really like it's styling, I like all the Skoda SUV cars styling actually, I think they blend an aggressive and upmarket stance pretty well, this seems to fit in very well. Although expensive in some ways especially this model, it's a great alround family EV that seems to be really good quality, love the interior, they seem to have remembered it's a car and not a space ship. Decent user friendly or friendlier interface/infotainment system than most from this group and at this price point. Although it's bigger than its stable mate in some ways this is wat the ID 4 should have been. Looks like Skoda may be showing VW up again. Also yeaa! Ginny for saying out loud that family cars don't need to be doing 0-62 in 3secs, same as ICE electric cars should be powered to suit the purpose of the vehicle, not every person on the school run or trip to supermarket is going to be doing the quarter mile dash in their expensive family car haha

Great looking interior, not sure where it sits in the market alongside the I’d.4, seems a little steep in price when you select a couple of much needed specs like faster DC charging. @4:48 - Great review, but I'm not a fan Skoda's options 'pack' methodology; for example, if you want tinted windows, you can only get these as part of a bundled pack which includes keyless entry, wireless charging, extra sound insulation and an alert thing. This makes the option to have tinted windows very expensive - over £700 I think. Usually you can specify tinted windows on their own, for just a couple of hundred quid (as I did in a 5 series BMW).

It's sooo much better than an ID.4 it's not even funny. In some markets it's a bit stingy with equipment, but there's only a couple options to choose from in others (my market has the heat pump as standard for example) that make getting an ID.4 over this (steel wheels? really VW?) purely a brand choice.

In the states, you can't get all the bells and whistles you can in Europe, but you can still get a well-equipped ID.4, similar to this one, for 35k USD after incentives and just under 40k for the AWD 300 hp version. @@davetravels9273 Yeah, this is why the ID.4 is high on our list. It's a handsome vehicle, perfectly sized, with good (if not great) range and charging speed / curve. The car is huge so worth the asking price. The problem with the options approach is it makes leasing overly expensive because you pay the full cost of the options over the lease term, rather than just the depreciation of the car. Leasing a £50k car is about £120 per month cheaper (for 36 months), than leasing a £45k car with £5k of options.

A nicely styled and practical entry into the EV market from Skoda. Two disappointments for me: first, the price, which is extortionate; and second, the lack of availability in my home country of New Zealand until 2023 at the earliest (VW's ID3 and ID4 models have similarly long lead times).

Looks nice but I am not a fan of the huge options list. They have it set up so the base model is basically 4 wheels, a motor and a body kit. That's about it. Talking about base model price is meaningless because so much is missed off that everyone, literally, will need to spec some options. And the thing about options is that they depreciate much faster than the rest of the car. Forget the base price, it's an illusion designed to draw people in - a marketing ploy. The reality is that this is an expensive car. Spec it to get near to the spec of the Kia Soul EV and it's well over 40k. At that point, my interest lapsed. There's better cars coming down the track for that kind of money.

Because the bonnet is much shorter than an ICE car or even a Tesla. the MEB platform is specifically designed with this in mind to maximize interior volume and minimize bonnet area. Same as the new Mercedes EQS. Frunks are possible when you remove an engine (which this car never had) and Tesla's have them because they have followed conventional car design, whereas Mercedes and VAG have completely redesigned and rethought the design of the car and where things go.

Good looking ev option and a great review. In a UK winter I can’t see the bigger battery doing much over 150 miles though unless you drive like a saint. These things need bigger batteries or higher efficiency. I think with many people staying in the UK for holidays this year you will see queues of these, ID4s and Mach e’s at charge points all around the coast! I have had ev’s since the first i3 and although better, the charging network isn’t up to scratch yet. My advice, get a roof box for a model 3 or wait 18 months for a Y simply for the charging network! Families will often do a 150 to 200 mile day trip (total there and back) and this car will lead to anxiety with its real world range and lack of charging options. Probably not popular but I wouldn’t buy one.

@@chargeheadsuk I'm not disputing that Skodas have improved vastly, since becoming part of the VW group, but my point is people's perception of luxury brands. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay over £40 for a car carrying a Skoda label, no matter how good the car might be. VW made the same mistake a few years ago when they tried to enter the luxury market. The Phaeton had great engineering and build quality, but VW priced it as a luxury car and very few of them sold...and those they did manage to sell, experienced dreadful depreciation. They made great used car buys, once they dropped in value. I get that car makers lust after the luxury market, but it takes decades to raise the perception of a brand's luxury value. Volvo has finally managed it and VW is slowly rising, but Skoda still has a long time to go..if ever. Perhaps better to stay in your own market sector and make the best cars in that segment.
