Volkswagen India has just launched their 2021 Volkswagen Taigun SUV days after Skoda India launched the 2021 Skoda Kushaq SUV. Both SUVs come with either a 1.0L TSI or a 1.5L TSI turbo petrol engine. Gearbox options include a 6-Speed manual, a 6-Speed Torque Converter for the 1.0L TSI variant or a 7-Speed DSG for the 1.5L TSI variant.
1.5 TSI engine comes with intelligent - Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) that senses the driving pattern and accordingly activates or deactivates 2 cylinders out of 4 resulting in reduced fuel consumption. While it certainly does help in increasing fuel efficiency, the main question is: Why should you get it removed /disabled then? How does it affect the reliability of the brilliant 1.5L TSI EVO petrol engine? Or should you wait for the all New 2021 Mahindra XUV700 ? Is cylinder activation deactivation technology reliable? What are the problems with cyllinder deactivation technology? Is active cylinder technology good, reliable?

I have a very basic question on whether we can really differentiate when 4 cylinders are activated and when not? because I test drove the vehicle and I felt sometime I got a good power during 2nd gear and sometimes it was dragging and so I was not able to make a proper judgement. If we say its activated when we press hard the acceleration what's the exact point and how do we know it

VW is not stupid to have such a tech running without much research. It actually saves 3 to 5 rs per km when used in an SUV as per current petrol rates. Run 1 lakh kms n you save 3 to 5 lakh rs on account of petrol saved. Vibrations etc are not even felt. Engines are so refined now a days.

Carmaster, is VW DSG's DQ200 version which is there in Kushaw and Taigun and Polo a wet clutch DCT? Many people in Teambhp and some other forums say that the DQ200 is a dry type DCT. But you say that VW bought a wet clutch DCT in the Polo post 2016. Please tell me whether the DQ200 is wet type DCT or Dry type DCT? I am totally confused.

Hey, I randomly inquired from a few Europeans who had posted the 1.5 ACT engine videos & they said ACT has been there for quite a while & didn't give any problems. However, i tend to stay away from cars having tightly packed engine bays because of poor heat dissipation & complexity (Creta diesel etc.) Even for a Polo, i find there's too much complexity in the engine bay (especially battery wiring). Now I'm a person who takes extreme care of their vehicles and hence have chosen Toyota & other Japanese vehicles over the years. I'm not here to debate but as a car buyer I'm having very limited options coming down to Kia Seltos turbo petrol or Slavia 1.5 TSI. Somehow I'm not convinced with Kia/Hyundai turbocharged engines & they're not pioneers of performance engines. Your views on ACT might be true but considering the fact that it'll operate very less times, doesn't it translate to negligible long term wear & tear of the engine which is something that can be overlooked since all engines start to loose performance over the years? What i found out is that this 1.5 TSI is an iteration of the old 1.4 TSI which has been there for a lot of time & had same ACT. So this is something new for India but it's not otherwise a newly developed product. Generally, European cars are known to have higher maintenance but let's not forget they come loaded with very advanced tech (esp luxury segment) which distinguishes them from Honda or Suzuki. So the way I've seen it is that French cars have the worst reliability (debatable i know!) followed by Italian, Czech (Skoda but essentially a VW) & then German (most reliable). Seeing this 1.5 TSI engine widely used in almost all VW group cars Audi/Scala/Octavia/Fabia/Superb/Seat/T-Roc/Passat/Virtus/Slavia/Kushaq/Tiguan/Taigun & many others hints me that it is developed for large scale & not just one car model/brand & instills a sense of faith in me. VW itself claims this engine to be the key pillar of their brand & the best selling one in their whole line up. So, basically if the reliability issues were quite a thing in these we would see them covered widely just how we see with every other car brand every now & then. If A320's Pratt and Whitney engines have been in the limelight for their defects then this 1.5 ACT is something that can't remain hidden but yet there's hardly any bad reports of them despite being in production over a decade & now we have the most refined tune of them. I would still like to see how these engines perform in India because they were developed for use in Europe where these engines operate at way cooler temperatures than what we have in India (hence the weak AC). Their road conditions are different than ours (Autobahns, mostly highways & less congested roads) which stress engines less. Given proper maintenance & care this 1.5 TSI engine can last really long without any problems.

If they did, perhaps they would've been considered equivalent to Toyota. But they are also not at fault. Ever tightening emission norms are creating more complexity and cost of manufacturing for companies. And somewhere, being a business, they do cut corners.

You are assuming this as if those 2 deactivated cylinders are never used at all. You should remember that 2 cylinder mode activates only when power is not needed like in highways. what I'm saying is this mode is not on always. I would like to know from where you've got your information.. or maybe you should try this on a used Skoda and see whether this is true 😂.
@cnsapam
@cnsapam 2 года назад
I completely agree with you as these cylinders are only momentarily or temporarily disabled and re-activated whenever it needs to go out of the super eco mode. so, technically the cylinders are not running dry for long. And it comes to the question if these momentarily running dry will damage the engine, my guess will be not all all. Think about it, when we do engine braking or diving downhill, we are almost doing similar thing. running the engine almost dry. So, there is harm done to the engine in long run, if few cylinders are disabled momentarily. And until we have a damaged 1.5 engine to prove it, lets not make wild guesses. VW must have done thousand of hours of testing with these modes and only put these features in their car. Why would they want to add feature that will prematurely kill their engine. So, until we have a damaged 1.5L engine, we shouldn't worry.

I wish you could've provided more technical details. It seems like you're just telling out of your interpretation and not based on actual working design of the engine. I'd love to know more details and justification of your thoughts. It's good to have different views and thoughts. Afterall VW is in for a business, they want to sell their product, what more would sell something that fails eventually, keeping customers happy.

Carmaster, VW could have deactivated the pistons and valves and not just the cylinder if they really had to give the ACT tech. I will definitely agree you for this. Those so called paid vloggers aren't covering the mechanical aspects at all instead they just say features, performance and something bullshit. You are the one who always says the truth about car's mechanical reliability. VW has done a silly mistake by not giving and option to deactivate 2 pistons and 2 valves along the 2 cylinders. Shocked to see them doing such a big mistake. But as you said, once the ACT is deactivated, the 1.5 will be extremely reliable and will definitely last 200K KMS.
@CarMasteronly
@CarMasteronly 2 года назад
Using a system to deactivate pistons and. Valves also will make the engine more complicated and too expensive. That'll use more sensors and computers. More complexity will eventually mean less reliability.

A nonsensical fanboy like you typically comments like this only. Is VW, with all your worshipped fancy engineers making the most reliable cars out there? In the world? In India? Now you'll typically reply with something silly like VW is all about performance and quality and something illogical like that and for reliability you buy a Toyota. But haven't I said that these engines are good performers but reliability wise they fall behind due to all this unwanted tech crammed in? Get a life bhai. The buyers ain't fools running haywire on forums and even youtube, complaining about VW stuff. Engineers can be highly qualified and skilled, but at the end of the day they work under business corporations only. Dont forget that.
