Accounting for around 40 per cent of all Skoda’s sales, the Octavia is its best-selling model by far and to make it just that bit more competitive, Skoda has now fitted it with a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine.
Weighing in at a mere 78kg, it’s small and lightweight but still produces a meaty 113bhp, while Skoda claims that it’s six per cent more fuel efficient than the outgoing 1.2-litre engine it replaces.
In this review, we take an in-depth look at the interior of the Skoda Octavia 1.0 Litre including its boot size, dashboard and back seats. We then run through performance, price and finish up with the all-important verdict - is the Skoda Octavia 1.0 Litre a good car?
Constantly updated, Car Keys provides first-hand video reviews, as well as all of the latest car news.

All of you who think the 1.0l engine is a joke, you don't know what you're talking about. You didn't drove the car, you probably don't have any idea how a modern engine works, neither the technical improvements that goes into an 1.0l engine. (just as a random fact, an f1 car has a 1.6l engine). To say that something is worse just because it's smaller it's just stupid. This new small engines (not just skoda's) are not just small, but very EFFICIENT. A modern 1.0l turbo charged engine is better in any way than a 1.6l naturally aspirated engine. And when you say: "that's a very big car. how can you move that car whit a tiny engine". Well that massive car wights less than a vw golf, so yes, it's a massive car but it's very light, and didn't i just told you that it doesn't matter the size, it's all about how efficient it is and what figures it produces. If you want a quick car with a powerful engine, you don't get a 115 HP car no matter the engine size.

cataZrx yep I can vouch for that. My Fiesta Red Edition 1 litre 140 bhp is the strongest car I have ever driven up to 1.8 litre engines. Obviously most people here are naive and not up to date with the 3 Cylinder engines and how powerful and quiet they are.

I drive a 1.0 tsi se technology with a 7 speed DSG gear box having covered 10,000 miles in 8 months I have to say its a brilliant car comfy to drive and the engine is surprisingly quick you do get a slight rumble when the engine starts with the stop start function when in traffic but it settles once moving and the Se technology pack I have gives both front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a 9"sat nav screen amongst other goodies a true bargain I average 52 mpg and on a run this goes up to 55+ which for such a roomy car is excellent

I am owning this Skoda 1.0 TSI with auto 7 speed gearbox since October 2016 and gone about 5000 km now. So far the experience of Octavia is going great.I had a 1000 km autobahn trip and it was wonderful. The car never felt that it had 1.0 engine. It climbed the hills easily, overtaking, and going beyond my expectation speed without any problem (i drove it to 180 on and empty patch of straight road.. on German autobahn :) ) . Its amazing how Skoda achieved it with such a small 3 cylinder engine. In fact it feels and behaves like a bigger engine. And -- it also drinks like bigger engine :). The avg consumption i am getting (day to day city/motorway usage) , 14 km in 1 Liter of petrol. In full tank of petrol i am getting around 560 km. So yes, it drinks more then it claims, indeed disappointment. Other then that, the Cantos sound system, i am not feeling that it is working on its full potential. there is something missing in the experience. Music is not refreshing to the ears and it does not give wow factor while listening. overall the system is not sounding great.

I wanted a car with this new engine but like others here, I also felt that it might be a bit light on the CC's when installed in the Octavia. So I purchased the slightly smaller Seat Toledo (also available as the Skoda Rapid). In my Toledo this 1 litre 110bhp TSi engine is magnificent, free revving and delivering the perfect amount of power/economy, Its great around town and if it were legal to do so would sit at 80mph all day on the motorway. I still have a boot space of 550 litres almost as big as the Octavia and absolutely massive compared to the likes of a Ford Focus. If I won the lottery I would honestly be in no rush to change my car - For everyday motoring needs this new 3 cylinder 110bhp TSi petrol engine in the Toledo/Rapid and yes possibly the Octavia is motoring best kept secret..

Nice car! I know as I have one, but I think the xenon headlights should be standard. They makes the car look a lot better!

Every one I have taken out in my 1.0TSI have assumed it is an 1.8 or 2.0lt. One chap did not believe it was 1.0lt and had to put my registration into the government website to verify I was telling the truth. I am getting a true 50mpg.

Puzzles me this concern for small engines. 300 bhp on a Subaru 2.0 was never considered stressful, nor some sports cars pushing out more than 150 bhp per litre equivalent.

I got a 1.0 tsi recently but have to say so far the consumption is only near the advertised if you drive like a granny ( no offense) and change gear when recommended by the eco adviser (like 6th gear at around 70 km/h). Still have to figure it out. Other than that it's surprisingly quite and powerful.

What do you guys think about the endurance of this engine? I went for a test drive today with this engine, and it runs smoothly and surprisingly well performing for such a tiny engine. However I'm not sure what does it mean for the endurance, considering a small capacity engine for such torque and power? Will it reach 250.000 km and up? Or will it deteriorate sooner than that?

All these small engine wont be good past 100k is my guess. Even with a 2.0 4cyl diesel or petrol your lucky to be problem free after 200-250k which isnt enough in my book

Fair point Shahidul, if you want the Octavia for practical A to B journeys, this is a superb cost-effective, all-rounder.

Every time I come across one of these small engines turbos or hybrid always think to myself better off with the diesel version better mpg and a lot more torque

I just wonder with all these tiny engines Ford/VW group/ etc....in big cars, how they will perform when they are 3/5 years old. I remeber the 80's with 1.4 Renault 5 Turbo, 1.3 MG metro Turbo and 1.3 Fiat Uno Turbo, small light cars and after 3 years all were knackered. I think it was an Auto Express test.

we are living in a world of consumers. I have bought the octavia and waiting to get it with the 1 liter engine. my idea is in 3 years time to trade it in. I do not expect that engine to run the same after 100K

i think the engine is too small for a car this size especially when you have lots of heavy stuff in the car

Let me guess, Jeremy Clarckson told you they are nto reliable. Yet those 2CV's keep on running. Heck The 1.2's also are reliable as heck. .. HECK the 1.0 Ecoboost also just keeps on trucking! Preparing to eat Crow soon, or will you keep saying this shit all your life no matter how long you're proven wrong?

I hope this downsizing fashion will stop soon. Small engines are made for small cars and vacuum cleaners. 1.0 l engine in a big car like Octavia is like a 100kg man with lungs of a 5 year old kid. Simple phisics...

frozenman82 Sorry dude but I disagree. My Fiesta Zetec S Red Edition 1 Litre 140 bhp is the most powerful car I have ever driven. I wasn't really convinced initially but when I test drove one I was like " What the hell". It's the most strongest and powerful car (up to 1.8 Litre engines) I have ever driven. That 1 Litre Ecoboost 140 bhp engine is the most powerful production engine in the world ( In its class ofc) and does 0-62 in 9 secs. Seriously I am blown away with how powerful that engine is. Had 5 people and luggage in the car the other day and the engine just wouldn't stop going. Bloody amazing

frozenman82 Welcome to the future, you can go back to 1960 and use bigger engines.
