Most people cant handle a "non American" looking gun while i think the M16A4 style rifle is one of the prettiest things Ive seen the AK stands alone for me so great to hold feels like a tank and im never worried of it getting hurt how ever the AR i feel like it will break in my hands
That is a very handsome stock indeed. It does make the SKS looks like a high end hunting rifle. Really it seems the SKS can be made to look like just about any kind of rifle with all the different stocks and accessories for them.
I love the look of timbersmith's stocks, but I'm not sure I want to sacrifice the bayonet. I enjoy the authentic mil-surp look of the rifle with bayonet. My stock is pretty dinged up though. Got the rifle for a bargain--$275 + shipping
Finally! Tapco gets the sks stock right. Not saying the other stocks do not work. Their other selection of pistol grip synthetic stocks for the sks just make the rifle look kind of goofy.
According to the web site, the stock you're showing in this video is "no longer available", which sucks, because it's the best looking stock of them all. The next best wood grain (if you like them) is the thumbhole stock, which is also "no longer available". Seems like they've discontinued all of the best looking wood grain stocks. The others they're selling are... well... funky looking.
I had a Chinese "Para" SKS,16" barrel, short spike bayonet, back in 1990...Never should have sold that one! Paid 110.00for it,sold it for 200.00 a year later.Last one I saw for sale about seven years ago was1200.00! These stocks have renewed my interest in the old SKS!! Time to go shopping. Sweet looking rifle Sootch. Thanks for the heads up on these.
I agree. Especially about the SVD/ NDM-86. What those people are talking about is how they are generally rougher when it comes to the machining. You will generally see more lines from the milling. That is certainly not the case all the time though.
@italianguns No problem for left handers shooting an SKS. The ejected shells actually go up and forward instead of back towards the shooter like on an AR.
I have a YUGO type 56 with everything original. After almost owning it for 7 years, it finally stopped sweating cosmoline. This rifle loves the steel case - non re loadable type of ammo typically made in Russia (Wolf, etc). The bayonet can be used for Zombies in a last stand type of situation :-). That is a nice stock though. I recently was thinking of upgrading mine to have a tri rail with red dot - but I really like the original furniture.
You make the comment that some of these were seen in use at the end of 1945. To the best of my knowledge the first ones were made in 1949, well outside of WWII. The early models had a strange firing pin setup and all the ones made after that time had a different firing pin design.
Thanks for this video Sootch! I just installed one on a Chinese Paratrooper. What ever happened to the video you were going to post on removing the gas tube hand guard?
Who said Russian Firearms are ugly? Point him out! just kidding. I have an AK47 and an AK74, Three SKS's and two SVT40's and love everyone of them. One of the SVT40's is select fire and the AK74 is select fire. Not only are they all beautiful firearms they were produced in such high numbers that you can still get them fairly cheap, well except for the SVT40's and AK74's.
That's a really beautiful stock. I've got a battlefield pick-up from Vietnam and the stock is not awful, but it is kind of banged up. I think I'd like to get a stock like this. :-)
We still get the basic SKSr in New Zealand for $300, good gun for the NZ bush chasing Fallow deer, has preformed out to 100yards with single shot kills.
I removed the bayonet on my sks, but will not hacksaw anything off. Removing it has slightly improved accuracy. I got an aftermarket tapco gas cylinder and tuned it as described on the sks boards - this reduces the violence of the action - still a ways to go - just installed a chinese phenolic resin stock - took a lot of time and care to fit it (they have to be fitted). Looking forward to trying it out. The Red Phenolic stock is TIGHT.
But it didn't have as nice of cheek plate and hand grip. I installed one of these on my Norrico SKS and liked it so much that I replaced the Tapco slide stock on my Russian SKS with one. The gun just feels better in your hands and the balance is improved. I still have the original stock which can be put back on.
absolutely awesome. I put a tapco tactical on my russian sks and not really liking it much, So this looks like an excellent replacement. Thank you much
I like my original wood on my 54 tula, and have no plans on changing it. I know some people like the laminate better, but the original wood just looks better, I think.
Those timbersmith stocks are beautiful, I put one on an AK, only because it came with shitty AR15 stock and Galil handguard. My SKS stock is still good so I'm not replaceing it, but if I need to I'd get a timbersmith.
Also have an idea knocking around my head to install a bayonet mount sort of like on the SMLE to attach a regular knife bayonet. The spike bayonets are really useless, and it would be a fun project.
@HillSavage72 if you get and SKS-D or SKS-M it can accept AK-Mags and the feeding and cycle is great. Just be careful if you put a Tapco or Duck Bill Mag on there it can really screw up your ROF or cycle.
You're not supposed to rest your barrel on the bag. The barrel needs to "free float" in any rifle so the harmonic wave is not interrupted. Rest the fore end on the bag and you'll get better results.
We are starting to see some magazine adapters for the SKS, once they catch on, the duckbill magazines will be history. I really like the original SKS magazine, haven't found anything yet for the SKS that is better.
I was just poking fun. I have been interested in a Carcano tanker for a while now the ones with the folding sksey bayonet. They are pretty nice - I hope people never: "discover" Carcanos. I had a 59/66 and she was a beaut. Loved the 'beech/birch' stock, imo the best sks stocks ever made. I can never have anything: 'nice' I always seem to have a better use for the $ - like surviving :) The best I did with my 59/66 was about 3" X 5 shots @100 yards, I was not trying, funny the gas was off & worked
@damiion666 Longer is an advantage for many of us, who find the original stock a bit short. The extra weight IMO is definitely a disadvantage. Although it is a sweet looking stock, all I really care about is how the stock fits me, and I can add to the length of pull with a butt pad.
My brother told me of a guy who is selling a SKS with a dragunov stock for $200 im not sure if I should jump on it as I dont know much about the SKS rifle. Who makes good ones who makes bad ones and what in general to look for. Brother said Excelent condition. (hes former military)
I've been using the tapco 20rd extended mag and so far I haven't had a single issue, though I've only shot about 200rds through it, but my friend with a promag 30rd experiences a lot of feeding issues.
That's a nice looking stock. I wonder if they are gonna produce them in red, blue, green colors. ..I kinda like the dark colors in the standard Russian one like you showed. I have one just like it, plus a Norinco one.
Sootch- I like small handy rifles. This SKS looks great compared to some longer army surplus rifles. Why not have this as a handy defense weapon vs. an AR? How about a comparison video? or Why not use the M1 30 vs. an AR/AK for WROL situation. I like the prices, the style of the old surplus. HOw about comparing power of bullets for these and giving philosophies of use? Thanks-
i agree i haven't found anything i like for the sks. i have a drum but it just takes so long to reload and its heavy i cant find a duckbill magazine in canada
I agree, they are beautiful. Well, I don't think the AK is beautiful necessarily, but the SKS sure is. But seriously, don't even get me started on that SVD.
Awesome Video I just got my self a Norinco SKS Paratrooper Rifle and I was wondering if that would fit the Shorter Carbine Models? I am guessing it Would because its just the barrel length. Really Appreciate your videos good work. Ooorah.
I am really digging the Tapco stock. Nice video by the way.I was originally looking at the composite, but when I saw your vid... my eyes got really WIDE!! Anyway, the only thing thing that is holding me back is that gas tube install.. How difficult is it to install for the Lehman? Very nice channel.. Thanks for sharing..
my yugo sks is very heavy i cant say i would enjoy more weight on the rifle. thankfully i got one with a stock in decent shape so i dont feel the need to replace it.
I find the SKS has a really short length of pull, and I would like a shapelier pistol grip. how much money is this here stock? Good review, I liked to see the side-by-side comparison.
