German WWII infantry weapons are so iconic. The MP40, MG42, STG44, there's not a single one that isn't immediately recognizable. Quite beautiful weapons, too.

It's not just the weapons either. It's really not fair to us that every single thing Nazi Germany made was the coolest thing EVER made. Afrika Korps Panzer IV ausf. G is the most gorgous tank that will ever exist.

Its always funny to me that those are so iconic because of how relatively rare they were among German infantry. Most just had old Kar 98s and only gun nerds recognize those.

@@404Dannyboy well its only natural since, they where rare specially the stg. When you look at the names, you can actually understand why. It says what is and the year it was produced. MP-40 “Maschinen Pistole 1940”. They where limited to officers and SS. the poor normal dirty solider gets the weapon that where most comon the Karabiner 1898.

+NYG5 The "buy backs" are such a sham. How can it be a "buy back"? Did any of you buy your guns from the police department? I did not buy mine there, so I'm not planning to sell them "back" to them. Just silly "feel good" stuff.
@eberbacher007
@eberbacher007 8 лет назад
+hickok45 do they also destroy them in the USA, or do the cops resell them or auction them off? Here in germany, the gun laws are much stricter than in the US, so we don´t really have any buyback programs, because those who have the guns illegally, usually want to keep them. But what still happens is that people find weapons when cleaning out the house of dead relatives or when renovating old houses. A friend worked in the Guns/hunting wildlife department of our city and he often showed me pictures of stuff people brought in, that was often even legal (single shot muzzleloaders, swords, sabres, daggers for example, ) to own, but the people saw that it was a gun/weapon and brought it to the city office. And the law says that all of these weapons had to be destroyed, no matter that some weren´t even illegal and where 120 year old antiques.

This is the attitude we ALL need to have when it comes time to VOTE. It's really too late after the freedom / gun banners get into office. If needed, they can easily send lots of geared-up "soldiers" with guns to your door to tell you what to do and what you can own, or to bring you to a cage. Not much you can to about it after they are in office. The voting booth is where most of these issues are resolved. Problem is, when elections come around, too many people are sitting at home on their couches with a cold beer, or just not informed, or simply swayed by the smooth talking politicians who promise them more benefits and checks in the mail.

yeah sadly enough in germany you cant even have a gun just because you want it. wheres the "freedom" in that? you have to be part of a gun sports club (which offer mostly small caliber like .22) or if you are a hunter. the other way to obtain one is through a collectors license but with that you are severly restricted to what you want to collect. As far as i know Hitler was opposed to the idear of a intermediate cartridge and didn´t approve the Stg44 at first. He only approved things that fit in his concept of weapons that he learned to use in WW1. So he only wanted MPs and Rifles. So the development name was changed to MP44 to get his approval. When he later found out how much the troops liked the gun he changed his mind.

Actually,Hitler hating the StG44 and its cartrige is a post war Rumor....He was basically just against its adoption in small number and before the weapon was properly tested.And ironically he was not very fond of development in directions with uncertain ending with small arms...Yes,thats the same man who wanted a bloody 180 ton Tank from 1942 onwards...
@omni5640
@omni5640 7 лет назад
Tanks and planes were used HEAVILY in WW1. It taught everyone the power of air superiority, thus the investment in the Luftwaffe and ofc everyone knows German tank designs were beyond it's era until the end of the war (Blitzkrieg tactic). I think he doubted the effectiveness of the STG44 since German ground tactics were to work in groups and have a tactical advantage rather than firepower advantage (see Americans for that) and that's why German squads focused on the Machine Gunner as the centre of the squad and everyone apart from the NCO was equipped with a KAR98 bolt action rifle. See 'German Squad Tactics in World War 2' by Military History Visualized /watch?v=-rKRt5zVZgw it's interesting. Germany didn't need overwhelming firepower and depended on the MG42 to do damage, hence the lack of innovation in small arms compared to America or the Commonwealth.

I also own an MP-44. Age is is not the reason for the double feed. It's the design. The gun was not perfect, but actually a well tested prototype, and there were many improvements left to be made, but it was developed in war time and rushed to production in a few short years, all in secrecy from Hitler himself. I have seen several variants of the MP-44 fire, and have fired an April 1945 StG-44, an early 1944 produced MP-43, and of course my mid-1944 produced MP-44 (the most common variant), and have shared the experience with other sturmgewehr owners. Although they are the same in all the important features, each of the guns behaves a little differently. My friend's MP-43 cannot cycle Serbian PPU modern ammo because the powder load is a tad too weak. Mine handles it fine, but it is very mag-finicky. It cannot operate reliably with postwar East German or replica mags, but runs almost flawlessly and reliably on original mags made by the Third Reich. They are not unreliable, but occasionally hiccup and are certainly not perfected. These guns were made from mostly sheet metal to speed production and lower cost to the point that they are almost disposable, and little can be done to repair them if damaged since they are mostly spot welded together in a rather permanent fashion. For me, the gun is a prized piece of history, and I am very grateful to be able to live in a country where I have the opportunity to earn it and experience shooting it.

+DARIVS ARCHITECTVS Thanks for this post! Yea, I have 3 magazines for this gun in the video. Two of them don't work at all, so I just keep them for whatever.....they are worth like $300 each now even not working. Guaranteed jams every 3 shots or so with those two magazines though. The magazine in this video is usually pretty much 100%, but was just bad luck that day. Like you posted, it's just part of the gun. A gun designed and then built in the middle of WW2 just isn't perfect. The concept is excellent and the look is amazing, but the reliability compared to gun made post war where time was available to actually test things out is just not even in the same realm. Again, thanks for your post, and it's cool to see another MP44 owner here. Mine is a 7000 serial number gun. What is yours if you don't mind sharing. Also, mine is fxo made. Thanks again.

Not right. It was made by Mauser engineer. After WW2 Ludwig Vorgrimler in need of a job, went to Spain, getting a job there to develop a roller lock Sturmgewehr called the Cetme. Later the German army needed a new Sturmgewehr and so they decided to ask the German company Heckler und Koch for it. HK got a licence from the Netherlands ( funny enough ) to produce the G3 which was exactly the same rifle as the Cetme was. Anyway .. it's good old German engineering. That's what matters.

The BAR that we all hear about is the M1918A1/A2 BAR in WW2 which was used and modified to suit the role of a SAW/LMG and it had a bi-pod and carrying handle to suit and was ~9kg's. but the Original M1918 BAR in WW1 was not used in the SAW/LMG role, it had no bi-pod or carrying handle and weighed a lighter 7.5kg's and had a select fire in which would be either shoulder or hip fired in Semi or Fully automatic just like an Assault rifle.

Robert H. Goddard: The Father of Rocketry A BAR uses a full rifle power cartridge, not an intermediate cartridge that assault rifles use. This makes it a machine gun. This also means that it would be very difficult to equip an entire squad with BAR's (even though it did happen rarely) due to the ammo being either too much to carry around or just having too much kickback to have in close quarters. It can be seen as a predecessor though, and it definitely was a genius design, but it still couldn't handle all the things a submachine could do, like an actual assault rifle can.

FYI. Many German soldiers tried to get their hands on ppshs as their mp40s where notoriously unreliable and tended to malfunction alot. The Soviet T-34 is also considered to have been superior to German ww2 tanks. If you're referring to the AK 47 which has a similar appearance to the stg 44. Well that's pretty much all they have in common ^^ the weapon platform is completely different so yeah....
@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376
"Germans had the coolest weapons. Everyone else just ripped them off. " -the Gas system of the STG 44 actually ripped off the Czechoslovakian ZB .26 and just scaled it down and turned it upside down. There have been many attempts at assault rifles before the STG 44 and critical features included that inspired the STG 44, things like the M1918 BAR, Burton M1917 lmr, Fedorov Avtomat, Ribeyrolles 1918 etc -the Walther P38 is a rip off of American designer John Brownings recoil operated tilt bolt pistol design. -the G43 is nearly a complete carbon copy of the Soviet SVT-40 -the Panzerschreck is nearly a complete carbon copy of the American Bazooka (and i don't mean to brag but the recoilless rocket principle i actually invented.) about the only 3 the Germans can claim as entirel theirs is the Lugar, Mauser and mg42/34..........and the Mauser was obsolete by ww2 and the Lugar was obsolete by ww1. The MG42 was a very ww2 weapon but after the war although it's feed system was copied it's Roller lock recoil operated design was obsoleted and almost never used again. almost All future GPMG's are dervivtives of the FN MAG or PKM which are both Gas operated which American designer John Browning invented, Infact the FN MAG (the common variented one)'s Gas operated system is almost the exact same as the BAR except turned upside down.

One possible correction: Hitler liked this, named it but my understanding is production was delayed by almost 2 years because Hitler didn’t think it would matter much. Wasn’t a priority. Albert Speer then stepped in, got production up and running. It made a difference, but it was too late by then. Russians understood the impact, started work on AK47
