never understood why people referred to it as "junk 2" I've had skunk 2 parts that have served their function for longer then most people who say that have been into hondas.
love the new set of tires and rims you got on with the green does contrast the car and bring the car out little bit better looks good man keep it up👍👍👍👍
Man you are the best! This is motivating me to work on my 91 Teg, I just need to save up and get the bushing kit. I want to make this car look clean!! Thank you for the videos! I've subscribed and have notifications on for when you upload more!
also, you only need to unbolt the exhaust and let it hang down. turn the wheel to the left fully. if you can remove the outers slide the rack to the right and it will come right out. Mine were seized on, I had to flip the rack 180 degrees, force it to the right until the left outer dropped, then slid the whole assembly out. Didnt remove any exhaust parts or shift linkages.
Nice work! The wheels look like the Konig Heliums, I have. You can always get some paint for the rotors. Maybe some zinc paint. My biggest problem with mine is the replacement of the discontinued parts for my ED8. I'd like to pick your brain about some underhood repairs, if possible.
Exactly what they are, these are what the Heliums are built off of. I love the Heliums too! Definitely, I don't mind having the conversation here as it may help others in the future!
Please want to know the answer too. I'm brought aftermarket axles before and they are never as good as OEM. Brand new OEM rack is impossible to find now. Would love to know where you get yours
the steering racks in these are actually pretty stout from the factory. All you gotta do is replace the rack end bushing which was $20 from the dealership. Steering is super tight, no more rattle. very impressed given the rack has 267K miles on it and the previous owner drove it for months with a dry rack.
When you replace the bushing do you have to replace the inner tie rods, too? Both my boots are torn so I'm trying to figure out what all I need to order before I order it.
@@GarageBuiltHondas True! Moog inners are like $30 off of rock auto. Figured I'd rebuild mine with new Moog everything and have it towed with my insurance 2 miles away for an alignment.
F.N.A Jon... Si's lookin SIIIICK. Very well job done brotha. Wish i could find any type of old ef around here thats this clean. Unfortunately theyre all used and abused. AND the Volks compliment the Tahiti green like you wouldnt believe. The Neck Breaker
Jon Widmer no doubt bro! 5 years is a good while. What its all about! Nostalgia x10. Used to have a crx with skunk2 parts galore. Even some skunkworks if you can believe that. Wish i woulda just stripped it and scrapped it. My loss was someone elses gain. Lesson learned i guess... once again mad props. Great to see what Texas has hiding out there
Garage Built Hondas most definitely brotha! I guess Cali aint the only ones with the EF gems rollin around. By the way.. REALLY diggin the new banner!! G.B.H great direction with the channel. Maybe some decals soon???? Would definitely rock one on my wagon
Anthony Del Rio Thanks, that means a lot. I wanted to create something that represented my channel a little more in the name but also the meaning! Decals arriving this week hopefully!! I'll keep everyone updated!
On your old upper control arms bushings, where did you get those from? I recently bought Truhart camber kits but it didn’t come with the bushings. I looked on their website and they don’t make it for a EF chassis. Thanks
Please tell me how much pressure can you apply with your hydraulic press, what type do you have? I am trying to make a homemade press with a hydraulic jack and don't know how much force I need for removing and pressing ball joints, bushing. Do you think a 4-5 tone jack will do the job? Thank you
+rhemyis I don't think the 4-5 ton jack will work. Mine is the 12 ton press from harbor freight. You'll probably save some time and money just buying one.
Holy crap, Jon! Your timing is incredible. My dad is too old and sick to drive anymore, so his 1998 Camry is basically my second car. (Yay, I have a winter beater now, so the ED7 can stay in the garage when the salt is out.) And, since it is 20 years old, it has a few issues, one of which is that I have to change the power steering rack out. You didn't look like you had too much trouble getting it off your Si...but I am a complete noob. Any caveats for a guy like me attempting this for the first time?
just picked up a project(ed6) 2 weeks ago and planning to build it for reliable weekend car was thinking going h22 or b16 then now i see this.. haha b16 it is lol nice vids man keep it up , gotta subs to you for more videos like this.
+Mark Spencer Sotelo Nice man, and thanks!! I know the b16 isn't even close to the baddest engine out there, but there's something about having an "era specific" engine in this chassis which I just love!
the only thing she is missing is a audio setup and I don't mean subwoofers just a nice head unit with some really nice component speakers but this is my opinion Jon and not my car lol she is a super clean and simple looking ride
I used to have a nice headunit too, but put in an OEM Honda 1000 to keep it clean. I don't ever use the radio in this car either, I like listening to the car, it's such a clean sound. My favorite out of my EF's!
car looks great I use those skunk arms too. im looking for a powersteering crossmember from the sedan to put in my hatch if you ever come across one thats rust free let me know please
Ok, will do! Hey singlecams, got a question for you. I've watched a bunch of your videos on the comparison of the handheld impact wrenches/guns. I need one for track days, something to take off all the lug nuts and knock loose the front subframe bolts, and maybe use it for other random parts here and there. What would you suggest?
hey buddy I would say see whichever price you like better between these 2 they are the big size models and can do lug nuts and more the first is called: Milwaukee 2763-22 the 2nd one is called Dewalt DCF899HP2 they both are just as powerful as most air compressor setups too. If you just want 1 gun those are the best options. Milwaukee has some other tools you can use the same 18v batteries on like smaller compact impacts that would be good for the track for just lugnuts and smaller jobs. They also have a 12v lineup and have a cordless ratchet , i posted a video of that too it's no where as powerful as an air ratchet but very handy.
Love your new setup brotha! Btw is that Firestone you took your car to get an alignment? I have lifetime alignment over there, and i seen them use that new alignment equipment when i had my old wheels, but now that I recently bought some new mag blue te37s, i'm a little bit worried about the faces possibly getting scratched by the new equipment. How was your experience?
Perfect experience! I go to Martin Tire. The sensors that they have are lined with rubber on the faces so there is no possible damage at all to the faces. I imagine the only damage would be if they dropped the sensor and the plastic part hit the face but doubt that will happen. I only go there now because I've been going there for the last 5 years and know the head technician very well so he takes better care of all the wheels/tires and alignments for me. How much is the lifetime alignment? I might consider that for my track car instead since I align it maybe 2-3 times a year.
Oh that's awesome! I purchased the lifetime alignment at Firestone when they had a special deal going on which was $175, regular price is $200 ( but they don't adjust camber with that price or provide that option for lifetime warranty.)
Billy John De La Cruz I see, looks like I'll stick to my dude, he'll set any camber, toe, and caster (if a traction bar is on the car) settings that I want thankfully!
hey jon quick questions not related to this video. Have you ever done a r12 to r134 conversion? is it worth converting or best to stick with r12? also i found a r134 oring kit for my sedan will the r12 harm the orings?
Yes, and R12 works 10x better. R134a in 100 degree weather is tough in stop and go traffic. On the highway or constantly moving forward then it works much better but once you come to a stop the temp rises quickly with R134a. I was going to rebuild the AC on the wagon, but haven't had time/money so far this year.
Jon, what would you recommend for front lower control arms for ef? Was looking at the hardrace ones, but I think that’s my only option. Any ideas? Thanks as always.
Garage Built Hondas oh ok. cool, thanks. what do you think about hardrace inner and outer tie rods? do you think i would be any different than an oem replacement I can get at an oreilly’s or something?
I know this video is old but I installed the rack and pinion I was wondering if you had to replace the inner tie rods on the new rack? Mine won't align correctly
With the sway bar issue in the rear? Did you have difficulty installing the endlink with the factory sway bar? I had to push up as I put the bolt in and wasnt necessarily easy and don't know if it's safe to drive like that under load. Cheers for the great video
Do you have a preference as far as the S2 Alpha LCA's over the Hardrace LCA's? I'm leaning towards the Hardrace LCA's for there bushings but I don't like that they have a bolt opening to remove the bushings.
Thanks Coda!! But classic isn't what I wanted. I wanted it to stand out a little bit. Plus, I don't want a bunch of silver sets of wheels. It'll be cool when I get bored of the looks and want to swap wheels around from one car to another.
I tried to install the camber kit in the center and let the shop do the alignment, as my shop is one mile down the road... FAIL... backstory... the shop tried to align before the camber kit. said it needed the kit to get the camber right. I bought it and installed. They now said its too low and they can't even put the alignment machine part on the car. I told them you already aligned it once...lol... So I guess i will be roughing on the camber myself. I think the camber was so negative the "new" tech was overwhelmed. I will take it back to them to tweak it when the "master tech" is on duty! ;).
Wow, that's terrible. I've been lucky that the master tech send my local Martin Tire shop has been there for s long time. He always takes care of me and sets my camber to whatever I want. I'm sure they'll be able to get you sorted out.
Well I just spent and hour in the garage with an angle finder... zeroed a digital level on the floor and measured against the rim. adjusted till I was at about 2% negative camber. Car already drives better. I was way negative. About rubbing on the spindles at install. So fingers crossed. ;)
Nice, I've honestly installed camber kits and never had it professionally aligned and I didn't have an issue. My first season of actual track racing, my car wasn't aligned and that wss after swapping both knuckles and the rear discs. Car felt super good too! Lol
Yes, it could also be the Rack End Bushing, or Inner Tie Rods, or Outer Tie Rods. I ended up with a brand new rack with new everything on it, then put on the new outer tie rods.
Most tire places do. I go to Martin Tire. I believe I'm going to try the Firestone lifetime alignment next as long as they can fit a lowered car there.
Thanks Brian!! I really like it, it wasn't more of a feeling, but I wanted it to look similar from the rear with how much the wheels bent in. It still handles amazingly, I took it for a few spirited drives after I had everything finished.
Jon Widmer awsome thanks for the reply because I just got a set of rear skunk2 control arms and pic front control arms and IV been doing alot of reach for good handling set ups right now I'm on 2.6 front can't remember the rear but that's just front being lowered ... awesome videos by the way much respect
Nice, I read a lot about track setups and found that 2.2 to 2.4 front and 2.0 to 2.2 camber in the rear worked well. I did the 2.4F and 2.2R and it feels awesome, my car handled very well and very precise. I may try something different in the future but for now I'm not going to mess with anything that doesn't need it.
what size rims are the gold ones? width, diameter, offset. and what tire size is on those I really like how the tires fit the wheel. and how well did the 15x8+25 fit? looking at getting some advan1's in that size. and if you dont mind answering another question what size tire would you fit about the same on those. first time building up a car and want some nice fitment. probably gonna do a full skunk2 suspension aswell like in this video. thanks man really enjoy watching. much love
@@GarageBuiltHondas it's an 89 DX hatch. I believe it is an ED6. Canadian manufacturer. d15b2 auto. not sure what all you need to know so if theres extra unnecessary info I gave sorry lol
@@GarageBuiltHondas how much camber would work for that offset? or is there a better offset/wheel size that would work? the wheels I am looking at, avid1 av18, (messed up the wheel brand earlier) come in 15x8+25 on fitment industries. not sure what other sizes there are but for 15x8 thate the only offset available
the only widths available for 15in diameter are 6.5 and 8. and I'd like a wider wheel if possible. not sure if I can custom order or find them somewhere else. but they're a pretty cheap wheel that still look fairly how I want to get me started as I'm on a pretty tight budget. sadly I do not have the money for te37's or I'd just buy them and get it over with😂
My 90 CRX has a 1.5 drop springs.(S Sport). The UCA camber kit was smacking the inside of my fenders so i had to take them back off. I guess toe is the most important adjustment? How can i tell if my rack end bushing is bad?
+journeyquest1 are your shocks still working fine? With a 1.5" drop there should be no way you're smacking the UCA against the tower unless your shocks are blown causing the car to rebound only with the spring. And a drop spring of 1.5" is generally a pretty soft spring rate. My track car is ran much harder than your daily driver and the front tires are to the fender and it only hits the UCA when I hit a big bump at the track a high speeds. Watch this video, it'll show you how to diagnose a bad rack end bushing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rIsdGhLmdcc.html
I need to rebuild my frontend. I have a new rack unit with outer tie rods and new UCAs. Just did the brakes but i probably need new struts up front before i proceed with rebuild. I will just use stock type UCAs with a good toe adjustment. 1.5 drop probably not a big deal on camber. Any good middle of the road struts you recommend for the front? Thanks
+journeyquest1 I'm a big fan of Tokico Blues. I've been using them since 2001 and have had a few sets on different EF's. For a mild drop you're good, any more than your planned 1.5 and I'd suggest extended top hats.
It's rare but I get down to Austin twice a year, but still like 3-4 hours from you. My bro-n-law was living in Houston for the last year, but he moved back home after just a year, he wasn't happy there.
Jon Widmer dude let me know I go to Austin twice a month that is nothing man if there's a big event where your by I'll take a trip let me know big fan bro😎💯
+BirdyIsPro73 I wanted a new rack because of mileage. I figured it couldn't hurt and it was only $100 for the rack with inner tie rods. I used all eBay parts, my rack and outers both from eBay.
Garage Built Hondas damn you trust ebay? Idk if i trust em, i think i might give em a try. My integra is at 245k might as well replace the rack haha might as well do all my suspension.
+BirdyIsPro73 I do man! I've been using a bunch of parts off eBay. All the wheel bearings on my track car are from eBay, same with those outer tie rods, and even the fuel pump. All no problems at all! I have used many parts in the past too.
Garage Built Hondas, no im just curious cause I tried to replace the bushings but they are smaller then the stock size bushing on the Da, I try to figure out what exactly size to order but called skunk2 the guy had no idea, do u still have ur skunk2 bushing ?
Jose Hilario First check your speedometer cable when it connects to the back of the cluster, then also at the transmission. Possibly unplugged, if not then the cable might have broken. Temp gauge, check the wiring under the distributor. There is a single plug that the gauge reads off located there. check the plug, then wiring. If that doesn't work for either, then you might just need a new cluster. I've seen a lot that have had non functional gauges.
I'm dailying re71-Rs now on my ef hatch and I just wanna know if these are better in rain. Ik they'll never be all season good or bfg rival sport comp 2 good like on my wrx
Yo bro I have a 1991 with and b18a1 LS swap in it . I'm getting a whole new skunk2 suspension but I'm not sure which one to get . The one for Acura integra or the 91 Civic cause it's the b series already in it.
I hit a curve like two years ago the car sat . So I just a b20 for and I have the type R transmission for it and new cluthc kit for it . But my suspension the only thing I need now . Thanks !!! I already ordered the skunk 2 coil overs . I need the camper rack and pinion and lover control arms.
+Tiger Doll The difference in turns from lock to lock is unnoticeable unless you are tracking your car. I got a brand new one off eBay for $99 and it's great.
Yes, they are great. What really matters is the shocks/struts that you pair them with. Go cheap, and the coil sleeves will feel like garbage. You'll need something that can handle the lowered ride height.
Jon Widmer I currently have the Skunk2 Lowering springs but Ive been thinking about getting the coil sleeves. thanks for the reply man and great videos keep them up.
Samuel Ruiz they have a nice spring rate, not too harsh or soft. A good sport feeling! Springs suck, I've never had good luck with them sitting correctly. I feel like they are never even from both sides.
+Alex Vong I bought mine all of eBay. I got the least expensive pieces and have had good experiences with those in the past. $100 shipped for the rack with inner tie rods, and $15 shipped for the outer tie rods.
Alex Vong They shouldn't be loose at all. If you don't get an alignment you are going to wear out your tires quick and the car will probably feel like it's all over the road.
