I'm 67 and this is the first time that I've seen Sky King since I enjoyed it as a kid - thanks for posting it! Even better are the many comments - we agree that the world has changed so much (for the worse), and as important as family, church and school was, yes, most kids' TV shows of the 50s and early 60s also contributed to teaching us decency and good morals. Not much gray area - the bad guys were bad, the good guys were good, and good always triumphed over evil. I wish we could get our young grandkids to watch shows like this instead of destroying and killing everything and everyone in sight in their video games.

This was a show I watched as a youngster. As I recall TV had lots fewer channels, 2,4,7,9,11,13 and later 3 uhf channels 27, 33 and 53. With so many fewer channels than today it is surprising how much better programing was then vs now. Most folks had black and white TV and color showed up later. This was also the last decade that most Americans thought the future would be better. American industry was the envy of the world, and nearly everything was made in America. Most households had 1 working father and a stay at home mother. Children were generally well supervised as somebody's mom was always around to keep an eye on things. There were no cell phones, internet or personal computers, calculators were going to be decades into the future, although adding machines were around. I really miss this era and shows like this will take me back to what was a happy time for most of us that were growing up then. Thanks for posting this gem from the past.

What a huge and wonderful surprise to find my childhood hero posted here! I was just talking about the shows I watched as a child, Sky King being my favorite. My Dad had a plane and it was very "normal" in my youth to be around it, in the barn where the runway was the tractor lane, too! Today, these Americana memories are all but gone, and these kinds of "hobbies" are now reserved for the rich and famous (or at least their wannabes). We were just an average family, with a Dad who had an interest in how things worked, which led him to find his rattletrap plane. He bought it for practically nothing, I think $500, if I remember correctly, and he hauled it out to that barn. When he pulled it back out, his co-workers and brothers and sisters were all there, prepared to laugh. Nobody laughed, but they sure did line up for their ride! I am 65. I miss those days when life was the true adventure.

I used to watch Sky King on Saturday mornings during the late 1950’s/early to mid 1960’s. Nabisco was a sponsor. Chrysler furnished the cars in the mid to late 1950’s.

I'm 66 and grew up watching these old shows. I have logged time in both the Cessna 310, and the Beech D-18. Never got to fly a Cessna T-50. Three years ago, Meniere's Disease has grounded me for life, but I still love to go fly with friends. What intrigued me was the old Culver Cadet, Penny was "flying" in the race. Extremely rare these days.

BTW, they were all live action shows, not a cartoon in the bunch.

I`m old now, but I wasn`t always this way. Back in `66 or `67 I was hitchhiking back to the East coast & was stranded for a good while in the desert [Arizona or New Mexico] & it was summertime & I was getting seriously dehydrated. Finally I got picked up by this wonderful old guy who had a couple of gallons of water, of which he invited me to partake of & I decided to not be shy & had at it. He said he was a pilot & heading to the southeast for a job of crop dusting. Nowdays most people wouldn`t even know what that is. Anyhow, this old guy [probably 40`s or 50`s] said that he was the actual pilot in Sky King. He seemed so real that I believed him. Even if it was bullshit, who cares? It was a great story.

Wow in 1956 I was four years old as well, and lived on the beach in Playa Del Ray. My uncle had a big apartment building right on the peninsula. His company was Marshall Builders, he did a lot of development in the area. He had also bought the property right on that lagoon, then later the city forced him to sell it.....

I am 66 and watched the show also. Your comment about three TV stations made me remember that there were only three stations that we could receive when I was young. I have a sort of funny story that shows the difference between 1958 and today, as related by an older sister. One of my brothers who was in the Air Force at the time came home on leave. He returned after boot camp and spending more than a year away from home. He saw that our dad had bought a TV after he left for the Air Force. When he saw that there were three different TV stations, he reportedly asked, "How in the world can you all watch so much TV?"

Sky King, the Cisco Kid, the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Casidy, and Wild Bill Hickok were all Saturday morning rituals for me... That was after about 3 hours of cartoons before the westerns even came on. As much as I loved them, in retrospect being the first generation of kids who had a TV as a baby sitter wasn't 100 percent healthy... but somehow I managed to survive. 😋😋😋 For Penny fans, I see there was an interview with her on a RU-vid episode. Just search for "Sky King's Penny". As one commenter pointed out, the shows were only 30 minutes but had a full 25 minutes of content. Honestly, I don't think the current 1 hour shows have much more than that 25 minutes of content in them. Thirty minutes (without the non-stop commercial interruptions that we have today) seemed a long longer and was plenty of time to tell a good story. In all honesty however, the storylines were so simple, there just wasn't enough "there there" to fill an entire hour. That's not to say the storylines today are any better.
