Skydiving First Cutaway....with Cows

First parachute malfunction. About as nice as they come.
This was completely avoidable. In a nutshell - canopy swap, putting mine back in my rig I knew something was off. Pulled the lines back out, flipped the risers over, looks good to me. Wasn't good, the lines where twisted around preventing me from turning and landing. A simple repacking of the parachute would have caught this. End up landing in a field with cows that did not appear happy to see me.

Hahaha great video dude! Funny ending! They were just coming to say “Hi”! I’ve been chased by cows too! Never really knew what they were thinking! Probably “mmmoooo!” When you finally decided to cut away, did you say to yourself “fuk it!” Right before you cut away? I know that’s what I would probably say!

I had a "nice" cutaway on my very first jump. I wonder what percentage of everyone who takes up skydiving has to do a cutaway on their first jump. Does anyone know? In my case, my canopy was MOSTLY open/inflated. About a fifth of the upper left portion of the cells didn't inflate. I did what I had just been taught in class earlier in the day, pulling the toggles all the way down to stall the canopy and try to fill those cells with air. I did that several times, to no effect. I'm not sure what else I tried, if anything. It was a long time ago (but rectangular canopies were in use by then, though I had a round reserve). It's good that they had new students opening their parachutes at 4000 feet, cuz I needed the altitude: I was totally not paying attention to my altimeter nor my heading....I imagine I was in a slow turn, but I'm not sure. It's possible that the canopy was landable using asymmetrical pull on the toggles? I don't know, that was way beyond my knowledge at that point, and we'd been told that anything less than a fully open main canopy required a cutaway. So after wasting more time making sure I pulled the cutaway handle first and the reserve handle second (still unaware of my altitude), I cut away and immediately pulled the reserve handle, got a nice, round reserve and floated down to safety. In the debriefing, the instructor said I had done the right things (aside from ignorance of my altitude and heading).

a fifth of the cells? that's an odd fraction for a 9 cell canopy. So you had 1.8 cell closures?
@leisulin
@leisulin 3 года назад
@@galt820 It was my first jump! I didn't know how many freaking cells there were, and I didn't pause to count them. I just picture what I remember: a rectangular canopy with about a 5th or a 6th of the total rectangle uninflated in what from my perspective was the upper (i.e. forward) left corner of the canopy. Like I said, maybe I could have landed it if I'd known more, but us first-jump students were told any canopy which was not fully-inflated was to be considered needing to be cut away. So that's what I did. If I did have a 9-cell canopy (this was in 1989), I would guess cell 1 was almost entirely uninflated and cell 2 was mostly uninflated, and maybe even cell 3 was involved. But the cells to the far left were the most affected and if there were 9 cells as you say probably the right-hand 6 were all fully open, and the rest were only partially open.
@galt820
@galt820 3 года назад
@@leisulin it was just a question bro. didn't mean to make you feel so butt hurt about it. Obviously you didn't progress very much into skydiving after your first jump or you would know there are 7 and 9 cell ram air canopies.
@leisulin
@leisulin 3 года назад
@@galt820 Well, it sounded snide. Sorry if I misinterpreted. That jump was the first of three static line jumps. Then they talked me into doing the AFF course, which I did and completed, and then did six solo jumps, for a total of 24. I had reached the point of needing to buy my own equipment rather than just use the dropzone's student rigs, and so I was going to have to learn how to pack a parachute, but it was Colorado and winter was coming, and I wasn't thrilled by the idea of skydiving in the winter, so I took the winter off and had to decide if I was committed enough to it to buy all the equipment, and I decided not to.

Had a few lock ups, but was able to clear; slider lock was easy; only malfunction was a bag-lock, with partial deploy; took me 2 seconds to decide, it's time to do that routine.

Two reasons not to land in a pasture if possible: 1. Large, potentially territorial, animals vs. an unarmed skydiver. Who do you think will win? 2. You're landing in a "minefield." LOL

Rotated canopy. Easy to untangle on the ground by rotating it 360° about the canopy's x axis. Not so easy while it's under load. 😂

Where the yellow handles are used to stear the canopy the left side was twisted making the canopy unstable not allowing complete control to steer or land the canopy. This was most likely caused due to a step over or step through when packing the canopy, there are things you do here to prevent this from happening which we're not done, this is very easy to prevent so someone did not know what they were doing or was not paying attention. It was possible to land the canopy using the rear risers but some would consider this an extremely hard landing and would prefer just to cut away as shown in this video.
