Still not exactly sure what went wrong. According to the FPV feed the Vector autopilot was in RTH mode while the plane was freaking out in the air. This makes it seem like the Vector was glitching (which is very unlikely) or the aileron servos were malfunctioning.

"Theres a restricted airspace around a military base 15 miles from here. I hope I don't get signal jammed" *Flies 15.1 miles away and immediately falls out of the air.* I know thats not how it works, but how good is that.
@DroneShotFPV
@DroneShotFPV 4 года назад
That was exactly my thoughts, how coincidental that was lol. I think it may have had a motor issue, or, as he said about the unplugging of the servo for that camera, maybe the same thing happened to the Aileron servos, as it was unable to recover. Even a massive gust wouldn't necessarily do EXACTLY what it was doing. Glad to see he got it back though!

The one thing that actually strikes me the most in this video is how peaceful and calm you remain (like looking at the beetles, flowers, surroundings...) and turning it into a funny search riddle even after loosing a quite valuable RC plane in the middle of nowhere for 2 days..... Make it all look normal... And eventually keep an interest for the nature! Your composure is astonishing!

Looking at the paused video (17:49) I see amp draw of only 0.4A and the FPV video is blacked out, but at least the Vector is still in RTH mode. So perhaps the ESC or motor failed, possibly taking down the 5V supply to the FPV cam and servos at the same time... hard to say for sure exactly. The recover was really cool though!

Glad you finally found it and many thanks for the great story! You should definitely consider getting an amateur radio license, you already know a lot about electronics and practical RF applications, so it may not be a big deal to pass the exam. You would then be able to legally put a high power GPS beacon on your planes that even when lying on the ground you can still hear them from miles away with a notebook, an RTL-SDR dongle for 10 bucks and freeware for decoding the transmission=location ... unless they crash with that kind of impact your plane did :-) Nothing seems to survive that ! Since these transmitters send RF in very short programmable intervals, the high power RF bursts will not even be noticeable on the overall power consumption ... so it may transmit for hours if in difficult terrain. Please let me know if you need and information on amateur radio or these GPS transmitters, though I am sure there are plenty of hams in and around Salt Lake City that could practically help you, while I am here in Munich, Germany

Since you found most parts except the motor at the crash site, it may be that you lost the motor while still in the air. A motor loss in flight would be pretty catastrophic. Aside from losing power, if the motor was dangling by the wires, the prop might chew up the fuselage; if the motor came off completely, it suddenly becomes a very nose heavy glider.
@moiakaefer632
@moiakaefer632 7 лет назад
feraloid would be an explanation why it crashed so hard
@icommentshit7486
@icommentshit7486 7 лет назад
Yeah that happened to me once everything on the plane worked but the moter fell out I have no idea how but it basically full power nose dived because it was dangling by wires and the place was DESTROYED
@mike_oe
@mike_oe 7 лет назад
don't think so: after the first instability, the plane continued at normal cruise speed and current (at 9:52)
@feraloid
@feraloid 7 лет назад
Or it may be the instability wasn't caused by the same thing that led to the crash. Perhaps whatever was causing the instability/spiraling led to the engine mount coming off. Hobby grade planes aren't very robust so one problem may have created another. I doubt there is enough evidence to really figure out what actually happened, but it is a useful exercise to speculate about failure scenarios.
@MichaelThe-Pyro
@MichaelThe-Pyro 7 лет назад
either way it's exactly what i imagine a shot down drone to look like also the debris field seems to indicate that it broke before impact and the tail section was utterly destroyed while the middle of the fuselage was mostly intact and if it hit nose down the tail should be in better condition and also not 20ft from the rest of the plane which leads me to believe the prop exploded or detached violently taking the tail section with it because if you notice as it nose diving to the earth the autopilot is using some roll adjustments but no pitch indicating that the tail section was ether missing or severely damaged

It's a good idea to do a loop around now and again. If the signal to the plane is slightly directional, because of hardware or an obstruction on your model (at that range), you'd find out sooner!
@RubenKelevra
@RubenKelevra 5 лет назад
Yeah but the RTH should work without a signal, so there was obviously an issue in the power system. Last current draw was 0.4 amps, so the motor failed, which looks like the motor controller died and killed the power.

I skipped around a lot on this one because my impatience is legendary, but that's no commentary on the vid; I really liked this. Glad you found the plane and at least got the memory card! Sorry about the immense damage. I've done the walk of shame / search and rescue many times myself, and it never fails to amaze me how much _damage_ such a small and light aircraft can take on a simple drop to the deck from a couple hundred feet up. First time I lost a plane that way I just stood and stared at the mess like it had to be an illusion. Not just the foam, man, but the carnage to each and every part is astonishing. First you're like, "Maybe I can fix the plane". Then you see it and you're like "Maybe I can salvage some servos, the electronics and the camera." Then you're like, "Maybe at least the memory card is ok." One time, I cartwheeled a scratchbuilt quadcopter on a gravel road and couldn't even find that much to be happy about, lol. The arms and wiring were literally wrapped around the body like some kind of modern art techno tumbleweed. Camera was totally fragged and no memory card anywhere. Another time I whacked a plane and it nearly caught fire from lipo damage. Ah but the memories, really did have lots of good times. I'd do it all the same way again with hopefully a lot less stupid noob mistakes.

Wow! Great sleuthing with a great outcome! Unbelievable velocity evident in the destruction. Must've been in a full power dive. That the foam survived the dive before impact is remarkable. Thanks also for the interesting history of the area.

Glad you found the airplane D. I can't believe how destroyed everything was. I can't imagine how bad the GoPro would be if it hadn't been in the case.

I was so glad you recovered the plane but once I saw that your gear was destroyed, I was so disappointed. Thx a lot for the beautiful landscape. I just moved from Paris, I could not take this lifestyle anymore. I would be so happy in your place ( except for the poor plane ), it's so beautiful !

Another great video and nice recovery of the Skyhunter remains. The search was as interesting as the flight itself, excellent narrative!

Beautiful landscapes. And I admire you being so calm about losing a plane. I am usually way angrier.

I once lost a drone on rock mountains at more than 2000m of altitude. Had to leave it there for 2 weeks before I was ready to search for it. Seemed like a super easy task, but as soon as I started flying around looking for it I immediately realized that every single bit on the ground looked like my crashed drone and I was totally unable to judge the sizes of the objects I was seeng throught the screen hence how close to the land I needed to fly in order to be able to see what I was looking for. What seemed like a 1h job ended up taking 6h...and I had a good binocular too in my arsenal!
