+Frank Sells Oh, i thought it stemmed from Marxist FDR... In 1955 the Marxist UN was already sitting on the East River, on land donated by none other than David Rockefeller...the prince of NWO agenda. Old America goodbye!
Yes cuz of south and east Europe protecting you against mongols and turks for 100s of years now you let them in what a way to spit into your ancestors faces...
What a lovely film. Those were the golden years of the U.S., everything was cheap, many public services for free, the economy had only one direction: up! There were no threats by terrorism, no blasts and much less crime.
Home. Seeing all these places at this timeframe makes me not only proud to be a born and raised NY'ker but makes me appreciate a lot of these landmarks even more. Thankfully, most are still standing surrounded by an even FASTER NYC way of life. :)
Alexa Extraordinaire The twin towers were not around back then. The area in Lower Manhattan where the twin towers were built was originally Radio Row. Radio Row was the place where they sold electronics and televisions.
The coney island cyclone is legit. When I was in the cart I noticed a fuck ton of wooden boards missing from the track and I could feel the track rattling, also. Felt like some final destination shit was going to happen.
I moved to NYC in the late 90's and it was cool seeing how things were back in during 50s...same really just some slight changes. I always loved this city.
This was when the US still was rich and happy. Soaked with hundred thousands of patents taken from Germany for free and the payments received (and still to be received until 2008 from Britain) for the support during the war. The US was the only winner in all three possible ways: Military, economically, morally.
However, we keep hearing that TWA's Times Square billboard with twin zippers (one flashing a static message, the other scrolling) first debuted in 1956. Maybe "Love Me Or Leave Me" was a keeper at the time?
The super constellation was one of the greatest aircraft ever built, way ahead of its time. I had the pleasure of riding on one in 1966. (The Admirals plane) on a trip from Pensacola from training on an aircraft carrier. Flew there on a C-54 (DC-3), big difference. These planes were used for low level penetration of hurricanes until the early 1970s . Squadron VW-4 at Jacksonville.
Great nostalgic America. This is the America dreams of, of course it being more modern but still, early half of the 20th century is my favorite time for America because of all the patriotism in those 50 years.
Society was more 'polite', but people have always been the same. How many more times could they have heavy-hinted that Fran's brother wanted to 'lay down Sally'? Serious product placement for TWA, too.
LOL love seeing all the old skyscrapers that were in 1955 must of been mesmerizing since they were only 10-15 years old. Now correct me if I am wrong but seeing the United Nations building at that time looks like it would be very innovative and unique with an almost futuristic look to it!
This film is only 60 years old. Look around at today's technologies and the changes in society compared to the 1950's. Technological advancements have been rapidly altering society and are expected to occur at a much faster rate in just next ten years. Can you imagine what the world will be like just 60 years from now?
I learned more about the history of New York from this video than any other person I know that lives in New York. Heck, even New Yorkers don't know squat about half the things mentioned in this video lol
When America was civilized and had standards. Way before my time... Sigh. My grandparents, when they were alive, would always reminisce about these times and made it sound so much better than it is today.
And men WERE men, and women WERE women. Not transgendered, transexual bi sexual or whatever other letters added to the LBGTQ community. A real woman for me are actresses Christina Hendricks and Jeri Ryan.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper The destination of the clippers had to do with marketing and transportation at the destination. They didn't go to the west coast of the US because that was not where their market was. Also in the era of 1843 to 1869, in the western US, there was no transcontinental railroad. As the Wikipedia article above points out, the Tea Clipper era ended in 1869 with the opening of the Suez Canal.
21:07- The Polo Grounds, where the New York Mets played their initial seasons, was demolished in 1964; the "Polo Grounds Towers", a public housing development, stands in its place these days.
20:57- The New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers moved out of New York in 1957, and became the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Mets were organized in 1962.
There were earlier posts making fun of the fact that TWA was boasting an 8 hour coast to coast flight. Well, these days, you may be in the air for under six hours, but you may sit in a line of 20+ airplanes waiting to take off, and showing up hours before flight time to go through security. Then, when you get on, its a sardine can with lots of obnoxious passengers surrounding you. The "meal" is a bag of peanuts. The only thing that can be said about flying today is you can fly cheaper. But in terms of comfort and service, I would take the Super G Lockheed Constellation every time.
I like the way Americans dressed like adults then now you see middle aged men dressed like kids.Sneakers, short pants,t shirt and baseball caps. In Europe they really stick out, some of our children dress better than American seniors.
***** I wouldn't call them 'the enemy'. But the nutritionists really do suggest we eat way too many carbohydrates. Despite the lipid myth being disproven, it appears that the idea that fats are bad and all carbs are good is going to linger in our society's collective consciousness for some time. Sugar coated cereals are still being touted as 'part of a healthy breakfast' to our kids.
+D.E.B. B Children in US schools now are only allowed skim or 1% milk. So crazy when studies show that whole milk actually corresponds to lower weights than the low-fat crap. I went to school in the '60s, we had like one fat kid per class, not several, like now adays. Back then the ONLY milk at school was whole.
Does anyone know who the narrator is? (after the 4 minute mark) He has a nice smooth voice and casual way of speaking. Quite different from many of the over-the-top canned announcers of the day.
Why did the clipper go to New York from China with tea? Doesn't it make more sense at the time that it would go to San Francisco or some other west coast port?
This was the time when Elvis Presley Marilyn Monroe James Dean Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor are all very young and attractive but now all of them have already go to the heaven!what a good old days!
lol 4:17 he walks towards the plane. Imagine if that was allowed today. Even until the late 90s you could walk up to the gate even if you weren't a passenger.
Yes this was a good time on flights, where you treated like King and Queens. Yes and no controls on the Airport. ;-) NYC in the 50tees...wheres Doris Day and Rock Hudson? OMG Washington Bridge was in the Woods... How wonder where the Girls go..to Tiffanys..and shop until they drop. And later Ice tea until you drop...lol Awww i love New York City.
I agree, Manhattan is the greatest island on Earth - if you take away the people and the asphalt, brick, mortar, steel, concrete and all the rest of the profaning of nature this city, any city, represents via the construction trades.
Robby Bonter Isaac Asimov said it best: "New York, even in decline, bears a ravaged beauty that still marks its greatness, and what it has been, no other place will ever be."
it seems so old fashioned to us, but to people living there at the time, it was the future, a new era, a great new beginning the war had ended, new appliances made life easier, new medicines were coming out what a time it must have been
+blacksultan85 For starters, I'll say it appears you've never heard of Boss tweed and tamany hall. The dutch settlers were literally a riot. Speaking of riots, did you hear what they did to black people during the Irish riots in the 1860's? You ever heard of the book "how the other half lives" You'll see the slums of New York that lacked basic sanitation and was home to infectious deceases like cholera. Something else to note, while they filmed this promo clip, there was social and urban decay in many parts of Manhattan, and white flight had already begun. New york has never been innocent my friend. A city that big and with exponential growth that hasn't stopped since it's inception can never be described as innocent.
Interesting for sure. But they completely glossed over one issue- how did these 2 get around from place to place in Manhattan? Obviously, even then, driving wouldn't have been practical- but this being an airline's commercial, there was no way they were going to mention something as seemingly antiquated as the subway!! Even though the subway was in no way a competitor to an airline, they didn't want to admit that trains of any kind even existed.
