The switch is my savior as a busy dad with not much time for gaming anymore. I can often sneak in 30-40minutes on the switch in portable mode in bed before I go to sleep. Awesome system, the best Nintendo console in many years.
Steffenpoulsen Steffenpoulsen I get where you're coming from. Portability is a big reason a got a switch . Wouldn't be surprised to see something like hearthstone come to switch.
Ioannis Stf He clearly said, playing in bed... You know maybe he doesn't like to complicate turning the monitor, then the CPU; he just wants a small console with a dim screen for nights that he can put under his pillow if his wife wakes up
I never dreamed that one day, we would be able to play games like Skyrim and Doom on the go. Say what you will about the Switch, but this is damn impressive.
So let me get this straight....The difference is more bushes on the PS4 and some minor resolution difference? For a console that is "far less powerful" it punches far above its weight.
Ya penguin even digital foundry said in many cases the resolution is on par with PS4. Its pretty much a few trees and bushes lol. Stuff that really won't mean shit in the long run. I even prefer the colouring on the switch version in many circumstances. Running through Whiterun from that visual looked better on switch to me.
I remember people saying several months ago that the Switch was not going to be able to run Skyrim smoothly because BotW was stuttering occasionally, and how it would just be a port of the PS3 version. Boy I'm so glad at how wrong they were.
Mordecai R oh really? I'm sorry but do you know about the conversations I had with these morons who legit claimed this in one of digital foundry's videos? I think not. And there are comparisons to the 360 versions and tbh it looks a lot better. Sure there are some slight compromises to make the remastered version work, but it's a legit solid 900p, 30fps. The 360 version was 720p and stuttered every 5 seconds.
Manuel Figueroa why would I be salty because the SWITCH has a Shitty version of skyrim?.... I'm not salty I got a PC and played Skyrim with Mods and I played Skyrim on the go on vita years ago.
TheDude850 you had combos with morons?... show me proof 900P 30fps only while docked than in that case the PS4 destroys the Shitty SWITCH version. Also the 360 version wasn't jittery as you claim.
So what? There's no mobile game like Skyrim, not even close. I'm still bummed they canned the PSP version of Oblivion back in the day, since the leaked version looked absolutely incredible for the time.
I've never played Skyrim, so this will be my first time if I buy it. Not sure if I should get the PC version (because mod support) or the Switch version.
I love how everyone is shitting on the Switch. I guess they need to vent somewhere once they realise that their 800$ smartphones are only good for Candy Crush and Angry Birds sequels.
Adam meanwhile,Nvidia is working on New generation tegra Pascal 2 gen,10 namometars 4 teraflops of predormance in henheld,6 on docked. Brutaly low bateri consumotiom for 1080 p screan. Native 4 k on docked Tv mode. Just sayin
Adam K people at my school say to me “you paid $300 for that little thing???” But I️ mean, yeah they got phones that are $800, paid for the Xbox One on launch for $500 and the PS4 for $400.
So aesthetically, it looks better than the original. But not as good as the “true” special edition. But I love that "cooler" environment hue that they retained.
TheChazzyC didn’t say it wasn’t, I just said that it isn’t as good as the alternate versions of special edition. Chill 😂 😂 😂 In regards to the blue tint, it just reminds me of the first iteration of the game.
The switch version, although it has some features from the updated engine. Compared to the other parts, aesthetically, it’s lack luster. Not to be confused with being a bad port lol
baez1301 I’m just saying that it isn’t really an ideal version of special edition. Would you rather have had me call this version of the game “gimped?”
Pretty much same here. In fact where I use the Switch the most I can still stream from my PC, but its just not as easy as running something native on the Switch. I don't have to remember to take a controller with me and hope I get a stable WiFi signal. Plus I can play it on the train.
Gabbiadini Dude I'm not bragging or lying. I'm 38 years old and lucky enough to have the disposable income for these things. I'm just making the point that even though the switch is weak in terms of power, it's still a great bit of kit and a genuinely good time. People need to remember what makes gaming great... THE GAMES. The hardware is only 25% of the equation in my opinion.
I think all switch players know and expect downgrades on games coming from ps4 xbox and pc games. But u know the big pull for me is its handheld. I can play skyrim doom and others on the bus... waiting in line...at work...literally anywhere. And in handheld mode games look damn good. Dont buy a switch and expect ps4 xbox levels of graphics. Only had my switch 3 weeks and its brill!
PREZZER UK it's a nice showcase but looking at Doom, a showcase is all it is. If it doesn't play well at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's ahndheld or not. People always talk about compromises but, instead of these ports, we should be getting new switch focused third party titles.
I don't expect PS4 graphics on my switch but what i do expect is a decent port of the game. Skyrim on the switch is an example of a good port. Definitely picking this one up!
Youre literally saying the lowest amount it can reach, By that logic every game with dynamic resolution and frame rate dip runs like that the entire game. the game is mostly 30fps with frame pacing issues which will be fixed together with the audio glitch. The frame drop to 22fps is in certain demanding areas + also with a lot of enemies which you will mostly find on the highest difficulty. Stop spreading your biased information and state the full facts.
is it just me or does anybody else find the switch version more pleasing to the eye, the colour use just seems a bit colder and the game besides the obvious shimmering looks somehow sharper overall with more detail, I know this isn't the case in reality but that's what my eyeballs are seeing. pausing the video at 6.12 for example shows what I mean, that wall just looks way better on the switch to me, theres a more pleasing texture, it looks more coarse and natural, detail seems lost or smudged on the ps4
So the PS4 and XBOne and PC versions all have a thick volumetric fog effect but that is paired back heavily on Switch leading to a cleaner look. Less realistic looking, but probably more pleasing to the eye, I agree.
DF: "The Switch port of Skyrim does a pretty good job considering the hardware." Everyone else: "Hurr durr this looks like a mobile game!?!?!?!" It's not just about graphics guys. It's about making games work on a weaker console, which the Nintendo Switch is. Still doesn't hinder you from having fun with the game. I'm fucking enjoying playing games like Doom, Mario Odyssey and Zelda: BotW on the go.
The idea of playing through Skyrim on a portable device (the complete game with dlcs) sounds like a incredibly cool concept, the memories I have of Skyrim (Xbox 360) on my initial play through are so nostalgic.
_Hello, gamers._ _Look at the sky. Now back to me. Now back at the sky, now back to me._ _Sadly, it isn't 4K. But if you stopped worrying about resolution so much and switched to having fun on the go, soon enough you wouldn't even care that the sky's not quite as pretty._ _Look down. Back up. Where are you?_ _You're on the bus, with the game even home console games wish they could be!_ _What's in your hand? Back at me. I have it._ _It's a Switch, containing with an endless fantasy adventure and that mountainous countryside you love._ _Look again._ _The mountains are now dungeons!_ _Anything is possible when your console plays_ Skyrim _and not_ Star Fox Zero. _I'm on a dragon._
i dont give a shit about playing console games on the go while i can just listen to my favourite music on my phone or read my favourite book. waste of money and waste of time IN MY OPINION
Lurima Lasiaf And that's a totally valid opinion, of course, but bear in mind that by that same logic, you could just as easily make the argument that spending hundreds of dollars on books or a smartphone that lets you listen to music on the go is a huge waste when you could just buy a portable game console instead for less money.
Very pleasing result for Skyrim on Switch! Even though this is based on the newer Special Edition, it'd be interesting to see how it stacks up against the last-gen versions too. Seems to look a bit better than I remember of those.
I wonder if, given some time for patching, they could sort out a solution for the foliage LOD. Given how consistent the framerate is, I would hope to see a small improvement come later patches. Perhaps, even the ability to adjust the Foliage LOD manually.
I’ve sunk over 400 hours into Skyrim on my Switch, and it’s awesome, but I have 2 relatively minor complaints: 1. For the longest time there was no way to increase the image brightness or change the gamma setting for handheld mode. I had to either spam Candlelight/Magelight or carry a torch, so any stealthy dungeon crawling had to be done while docked to my TV, and the whole point of playing this on my Switch is to play it on the go. It’s no longer an issue, but it was for 95% of my playthrough. 2. No mods, not even Creation Club. Honestly it isn’t that big of a deal, but it would be great to play Survival mode at least. Playing Skyrim without ever needed to eat or rest or take shelter just makes a game that is all about immersion less immersive.
@@dinslax5270 not skyrim only but offline games because chances are the switch would be banned for modding since it seems like Nintendo doesn't ban accounts just while ass switches
Most likely due to time of day or weather changing the lighting a bit. Or because there's simply differences in contrast in the output of the PS4 and Switch, but that's gonna be different on your TV anyway.
Yeah, its not about day time, contrast is higher on switch but its a matter of taste. Some people would prefer low contrast. I'm not saying the game runs better by any means.
Then it's just about TV settings. You can probably make the game look as good on PS4 on PC just by tweaking the screen settings. Or the in game contrast for that matter.
Yup, people make too much of a technical analysis and just want to max out everything, instead of looking at it like a piece of art. Another aspect worthy of consideration would have been how does the Switch version look like compared to the original actual PC release, not the Special Edition which is shown here on PS4.
Playing Skyrim on Switch just a few minutes ago and as someone who had previously only played it on PC, I have been consistently impressed by how close to the PC version the Switch version really is. Obviously not all settings are at max, and it of course unfortunately lacks all mod support, but otherwise the experience seems almost an exact match. I've really loved playing Skyrim on my Switch. It is fantastic and absolutely worth it, provided you haven't already played previous versions to death.
Praise Kekistan I see you on you commented twice in row, desperate much? Your sad man, you can't even spell correctly Go back to school kid, please don't send a switch that thing is trash, I wouldn't even want that trash if it was Free, No thanks , only like girls defends kiddie NINTENDO consoles.
That's a stupid choice, if you're going to blow that kind of money get it for PC where you can improve FOV, LOD, and add more immersive mods. PSVR is a joke
If you have to zoom in and show a direct comparison in order to reveal the partial graphical downgrades, it means that the developers did a great job at hiding those downgrades.
So...slightly lower resolution, lesser volumetrics/ambient occlusion, and then they pulled the lod slider back. That’s incredible! Especially considering how the system has only been out for less than a year and the developers had a pretty limited amount of time to work on it. The parity is great and can only get better from here!
Ioannis Stf it does, it's a handheld device, I would have thought I'd would look really bad tbh, the only big difference seems to be resolution (where 720p is really good on such a small screen) and fog.
Ofc it's worse, but it's not as bad as i expected it to be on a handheld device.. A home console/PC will obviously always look better, that's not my point... -.-
As a new switch owner. I've been lost the past 4 days. Some games run at 30 fps but I can't explain it. You can lose hours on the switch laying back on the couch chilling. Def worth it. Graphics aren't always the best but you dont really notice it when you having fun
Would be great if you guys did an update on this and called out Bethesda for the lousy anniversary update that caused a huge performance drop. Seems like it even causes the dynamic resolution to go even lower now than it used to in some areas. Huge disappointment!
I’m really looking forward to this. I’ve never played Skyrim start to finish, just messed around with mods on PC. Looking forward to actually playing the game on the go.
God, november has been such a great month for the Switch. First with Doom, then with Rocket League, now with L.A. Noire and Skyrim, and then with Resident Evil Revelations Collection rounding out the month. That's a lot of ports, but a lot of damned good ones. I'd be interested to see how L.A. Noire and Rocket League hold up to their fellow console counterparts, but from what I've heard, they both run quite well. Rocket League apparently has a dynamic resolution scaler for handheld mode, but I've heard nothing like that for L.A. Noire. The Resident Evil Revelations Collection is reported to have a 720p 60FPS undocked / 1080p 60FPS docked setup for RE:RE1 and 30FPS for RE:RE2, but we'll see once review copies are out for it. Such a strong month. I can only hope that next year we will continue getting this gold mine of content!
There isnt too much of a difference from the PS4 and switch, hopefully it will be the same when the witcher comes out on the switch, hopefully they can make it better then what we saw today
I actually like how much brighter the game looks because of lower resolution. Main difference seems to be the lighting - a GAF user pointed out that Switch ports (DOOM) lose reflections in things.
Given the portability of the Switch and that given I'm cynical and expected it to look way worse than it does, I'm honesty very impressed. So job well done.
the most dignified video on RU-vid. I felt as if I had tuned into NPR for one second. "quite steady in the gameplay? oh yes quite, tomorrow we hunt at dawn."
Guess Wolfenstein II whenever it gets released on the Switch. That be a good comparison video imo. But yeah, Skyrim was never a good looking game. Even Fallout 4 imo, looked very meh and outdated, at least for me.
Why shouldn't Bethesda do this? It's by far their most successful game and each new port sells extremely well. It would be an incredibly poor business decision by them to stop this. I really don't get it. Why are people complaining about this? Nobody is forcing you to buy one of the ports.
Aside from the overall colder color temperature there's some kind of image sharpening going on with the switch that I don't see on the PS4 comparison. With Doom, Skyrim, L.A. Noire & Wolfenstein II switch is an awesome compromise of power for portability and Nintendo IP.
Good comparison ! Just one thing though, it would make more sense to do the comparison videos with the Xbox One version since it's the closest machine to the Switch in the console space. (even though it's still twice as much powerful)
Neocaron I think the xbone came off better than the ps4 in comparison ..that why they compared it to the ps4 version. Both 1080p and Xbone with a more stable frame rate.
Definitely not a Wii vs PS3/X360 comparison this time. The Switch is getting comparable ports (in some cases, almost identical -- LA Noire, Lego City, et cetera). Just as long as developers aren't lazy, the Switch should be fine mostly.
I’m playing this right now ,and you no it beats being stuck playing in One space And is such a joy to hold in your hands and take anyway that’s the advantage
This is honestly incredible for a portable. I mean, when you play on a smaller screen, a lot of the IQ issues arent as bad. This is essentially the full console version of Skyrim (an open world RPG), on your portable. Think about that. I just think it’s weird that anyone would be let down by comparing it to the PS4. I can understand if you use your Switch 100% as a home console. But I also think, who would wait this long to play Skyrim, and finally get it for Switch home console? I would imagine most people getting this, are getting it FOR portable. To have Skyrim on the go. So for those that are getting this for portable, this is a dream come true. The Switch is quickly becoming my fav console. LA Noire in portable mode looked breath taking, and actually looked as good as PS4 (again because the smaller screen, it scales beautifully).
Charles 8777 Yeah right all the Battlefield and Counterstrike pros use controllers...oh wait, they don't... also how is not being able to aim, recquiring auto aim, lock ons, aim assist for pros? What deseases do you idiots have to say such nonsense?
I can't really see me playing games like Skyrim on a train or a bus... I have a PSVita and a PSP Go, but when I have some hours to wait on a train I play mostly not too challenging or engaging game since I just wanna kill some time. And yeah, when I'm home, I have a PC.
@Charles I like how so many people cry that the game has been milked, but there are only two versions. Since when was porting to different platforms bad?
+Amir Abududai yep is was released on PS3,360,PS4,One,PS VR,Switch,PC, we havent get Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesa just want more money the thing that we can except is to be ported to mobile, the future playstation and xbox console
salvi it doesn’t look like 360 at all in terms of textures and models, game is running more assets and lighting then the original version as well it’s a toned down remastered edition just pretty much without depth of field and the highest god ray settings/shadows, there’s already a comparison and switch looks much better then PS3/360
a toned down remastered is just the original lmao. those things you mentioned are what set the remaster apart without them it looks like the original. the only thing that might be worse is the textures
salvi then go watch the switch vs 360/PS3 and tell me it’s the original because it’s clearly not just because it’s clearly not and if you can’t accept that you might have some issues
never said it was the original im saying it looks closer to the xbox 360 version than it does to ps4 so would be cool if they compared those two instead
I've only played it on PS3 before (which is comparable to 360), and it's massively better esp. in terms of resolution, anti-aliasing (low quality FXAA pass vs. somewhat high-quality - looks like MSAA-ish), textures, and, most importantly, frames ("dragon/castle siege fights in single digits" vs. hard locked at 30 all the time, no exceptions)! Also about 1/4 of the load time and less bugs. I would also assume that savegame file size doesn't impact performance anymore, although I can't confirm that because I haven't played 100 hours yet. If you say "it's the same" you have very selective memory.
@DigitalFoundry What is with this "soft-handed" review of the Switch's version of this game. You wuld never have done anything near like this for Xbox or Playsttation, all of the excuses and latitude given the Switch and the not stress testing the game. What is going on?
Yeah, like in the Doom review the game drops to 20 FPS in fights and even slows down, but it's all great, thumbs up. On PS4/Xbox if it a game goes down to 29 FPS they all all over it.
It's a portable which means it deserves a bit of slack. At the end of the day if you need a side-by-side comparison to notice any differences between the versions then the graphics are practically the same. If a console meant for competing with mid-range PCs is only getting 30fps then that's shit because the PCs can get 60fps, whereas it's amazing that a console the size of a kindle can play the game at all, let alone play it better than an Xbox 360 could.
In my personal experience (playing it mostly undocked) the biggest performance difference I notice has nothing to do with the graphics: it's all about the load times. There seems to be an extended load time when first starting the game, but once you're actually playing, the loading sequences between areas are FAR quicker on the Switch than they were back on the PS3. Back on the PS3, part of the delay in loading screens was the autosave. The Switch sees shorter loading times (with autosave enabled) than the PS3 ever did (even with autosave disabled!) -- running the game on a solid-state system (as contrast to a HDD system) really does make THAT MUCH difference.
I like how some people laugh at the notion of Fallout 4 on Switch, when we just got Doom, LA Noire and Skyrim on it. At this point, the Switch proves to us that anything is possible.
The game looks better without those 2 polygon rocks lying everywhere, I'll be completely honest. Those stupid little super-low-res rocks that just stand out, no matter what, are probably the biggest eye sores ever since Skyrim came out. Having less of them on the screen makes the Switch version 100% worth the money. lol EDIT: Also, let's be completely honest... No one in the world is playing Skyrim unmodded for the graphical quality... Skyrim isn't that pretty of a game in most cases, and that's perfectly fine. It's impressive in it's own ways, through visuals. Even back in 2011 I never thought it looked amazing, but I still managed to immerse myself in it far more than any game I'd played before. It definitely doesn't switch up its style like Oblivion does throughout the game (Oil painting world, Realms of Oblivion, Sheogoraths Realm...). The changes on the Switch (if anything) are barely anything to think twice about.
I know this game is over 6 years old. Yes I know. But I can't lie... THIS IS STILL VERY IMPRESSIVE! And if the tech can keep up. I can easily see in the future consoles that you can upgrade the ram, GPU and CPU to your liking. And be portable or docked at home like the switch
More than graphics I'd like to know if I can finish certain quests with a 90% chance of getting bugged that not even the Enhanced edition cared to patch :P
Can we get an Xbox one X enhanced Ghost Recon Wildlands comparison? Really curious how that game looks now on the X considering how big the gap between console and PC versions was.
