Dylan, I can’t tell you how much I love your videos. Easily the most engaging, entertaining and informative of all of them! Thank you for everything you do. It’s hugely appreciated
Glad to see you back, we are not getting a lot of info on the situation up north now, it's no longer a front page story so the news broadcasters have moved on. All the best & I hope thi ngs can get back to some sort of normal again soon. ✨🔭
Hey Dylan, great video. Just one thing, I would love to mention, next time you should remove the protector cap, from them 1/10 focuser side. (its like the feather touch focuser side). Cause I saw when you focused the scope the attach the camera, and I imagined the feather touch focuser just drilling it self in the protective case :D
@@DylanODonnell Apparently I’m also going backwards. Initially set out with an 8” newt and mono in mind, had a phase of using lenses+OSC, just spent all winter with an 80ED - presumably the immediate forerunner to this 82ED - and more OSC. So it goes. :) Not bad M42 shot at all.
Half expected a video of you loading animals 2 by 2 onto a boat, good to see your still with us. You guys have had it pretty rough down there, hopefully the worst is out the way. Stay safe.
It has been literally a biblical flood, just so long as you didn't have visions of Morgan Freeman at the bottom of your driveway with a pile of wood you're good.
I see at least one other has done the same as me. I used my old C925 with an OAG to guide a DSLR with a 24mm lens piggybacked underneath it on the dovetail. Then I bought the Evolux's precursor (Evostar 72) For a cheap toe in the water of short FL imaging (The Evolux looks better corrected than the Evostar going by your image) before spending some real money on a nice 80mm triplet, and a 10"F4 Newt to go with it. You can never have too many scopes. The Evostar spent some time doing guidescope duties too, before I sold it.
I've got the 72ED. Absolutely love it. You're totally right about the flattener. Mine does work on a star adventurer with a DSLR, but it's at the limit I'd say. Easier to carry around than a RASA.
Have the same. The flattener is so annoying - it rocks just a bit in the drawtube with all the weight of the camera off the back, so I end up really tightening those thumbscrews down. I keep meaning to find someone with a lathe to create me a double-threaded ring that would thread onto the back of the 72ED drawtube and onto which the flattener would be threaded.
Way to go Dylan. Love your setup and enthusiasm. recently upgrade my set up too with a Skymax 180 and a redcat 71 on top. keep those good videos coming.
Dylan, I loved the video - as always! I've just got a Redcat 51 to (primarily!) use as a guide scope for my new RASA 8 (that I haven't tried yet). So far I've got my Edge HD 9.25 on the mount with the Redcat, and (soon) I'm going to try using the Edge as a guide scope for the Redcat - just for fun - though I think it should work well! BTW, did you know people are supposed to become like their dogs... ;^)
I have used my AT10 RC for a guidescope with my side-by-side AT106 ... Works out great because I can also use the AT106 as the guidescope for my AT10. Takes a bit of configuring software to swap them, but its nice to be able to swap form a wide to narrow FOV in a few minutes.
I started doing EAA about 1 year ago when I bought my Celestron 1100 Edge HD, Hyperstar V4, and ASI533MC Pro. On occasion, going back to full-on astrophotography is fun, but being able to see and photograph 15 or 20 targets in an evening is really nice. It's also a big hit at star parties, where I hook my ASIAir Pro and iPad to a 27" television monitor on the tailgate of my pickup truck. I get large crowds of people.
Been shitty weather, I have to drive through and around Lismore everyday and it is slowly returning to normality. But more bad weather this weekend, I can do without that. Think it is time to move back to the desert, but even it had problems. Keep up the good work
I froze hell over before you did. I was guiding with my 80mm refractor (560mm fr) and imaging with my guider (SW evoguide 50ED-(250mm fr) last summer. I'm gonna do it again. I switch the cameras around, make a new profile in PHD2, and there...we... go! Truth to be told, I would rather make a mosaic with the main scope, but the lack of clear skies lately, I'm lucky if I get 3-4hrs imaging time per month.
I started off with a Celestron C9,25 and then quite quickly realized that 2350mm focal length is quite demanding for a beginner. I then bought a Meade 102mm series 5000 and was quite happy for five or six years. I know use the 9,25 only for visual and my main imaging scope is a Teleskop Service N-AG 10 carbon astrograph. 1000mm is perfect! :) /Daniel, Exo Photography
Good to see you posting a video Dylan, you’re my favorite Astro-RU-vidr on the Southern Hemisphere! Okay, you’re the only one I know of, but still 😉. By the way how is your guitar playing lately ? Are you a Fender guy or Gibson? Cheers!
Welcome to 20th century AP as we were piggybacking ST80s in the 1990s dual imaging wide-narrow field simultaneously on our LX200s. But seriously, with modern broadcast EAA it really makes sense to have a wide-field version regardless of target. I'm working on something a little different for planetary with my 16" LX200 using a binoviewer to have one side show the best view of Jupiter while the other can show the moons too. This would also be ideal for lunar viewing at multiple perspectives. Something to think about!
I’d be interested to see how this stacks up against the Esprit series. Mainly the Esprit 80ED. Obviously doublet vs triplet. But wonder how much difference there really is to justify the price difference.
A nice eye piece and you will be set.. I have been using the ed50 with a zwo 224 and it has a near perfect match fov with my big scope, it makes a significant difference to my guiding. Fun is the word that comes to mind. Also flexibility.
@@DylanODonnell Awesome 👍 I don't get on twitch often. Do you mind sending simulcast on RU-vid? Looks like I am missing some live events!! I still owe you what I promised!!
I’ve been using a 30 year-old Vixen/Celestron C80f on top of a C9.25 for about 15 years. That 80mm f8 fluorite is as close to perfect as I’ve ever looked through. It’s also the best 600 (640)mm camera lens I’ve tried. I could probably think of something rude for the “f” to stand for. If I could only have one telescope…
Since you have so many telescopes and cameras, have you tried your hand at an image that incorporates them all using adaptive optics? I’m sure you would be able to get a much sharper image than any of your equipment could on their own
Yey, I managed to get on your vid in text form at the end. I'm famous ;) Nice vid too BTW. I think I may get this scope, could do with a new scope for deep sky stuff
Thanks for the video... I've been recently getting back into my astronomy again (a small child plays havoc with nighttimes!). We attended StarStuff I - which was absolutely fantastic, do you think you'll ever do another StarStuff again (once everything is "normal" again)
This scope looks great, I think I want one for no reason other than it would look great on my shelf cause I sure don’t have time to take pictures with it.
g`day dylan so your dancing with the devil in hopefully no moon light lol .......cant wait to see what you can do with the evolux 72.. tonight looks good in sydney... hope your house came out of the floods in good shape and the family is all ok ...all part of living in paradise the rest of the time i guess ... great video mate cheers james D
There are a ton of APO doublets out there. I like that this one comes with the flattener and I do like SkyWatcher scopes. Welcome back, Dylan! Just out of curiosity, what is your adult malt beverage of choice?
It doesn't come with the flattener/reducer .. but it's essential so shouldn't be bought without it really :) My favee beer is Stone and Wood! Used to be the trendy hipster Pacific Ale, but really enjoying the blander / cheaper / classic / proletarian Green Coast Lager recently.
@@DylanODonnell If it's sold separately then it seems pretty pricy for a doublet, even with the higher gear prices these days. Finished image looked great though and I like the way the rig looks with the scope on top! On a beer note, we just had a German-style brewery open in my town and I'm enjoying the hell out of that! I hope normal comes back quickly for you! Clear skies!
After battling with collimation and mirror alignment woes for the last month with my 8" f/4 newt, I've certainly started having... erroneous thoughts... Of maybe purchasing a refractor. Wider FOV, no collimation woes, no diffraction spike alignment issues... Perfect for widefield nebulae and clusters. They certainly have merit, especially for the newer astrophotographers. Cheaper, and much lighter and easier to guide too.
Hey Dylan, what do you use for data storage? I've gotten to a point where I think I'm going to build a TrueNas out of an old PC because I'm tired of buying external hard drives! Great episode as always! I lean towards refractors on the Mach2 but I always keep the RASA11 on the 1100GTO. Can't beat it combined with the 6200MM.
First time I have EVER even considered Twitch... Damn you, you have me now considering signing up for yet ANOTHER platform just to see your live stream stuff ...LOL
I know this might sound like a dumb question...but...did you put a 2" filter in your setup? I have a 72ED with field flattener and have had to jerry-rig the setup in order to include a 2" filter. Feel like I must be doing it wrong because it seems incredibly complicated otherwise.
4:00 lol the infamous QHY rings make an appearance. Hopefully no bolt cutting (shortening) was involved. I'm confused though why you dropped down to M42 from M48 - why not use M48 rings/extenders and go straight into the 247 at that diameter?
Great video. Question for you: I have an Edge 11 in a nexdome and am planning to piggyback a 500mm scope as well. Did you have any problems with both working at the same time through the opening? I was going to experiment with it, but seeing as you at least test drove was curious how it went setting the dome parameters. Thanks!!
Yes it's a pain in the ass to be honest. Adjusting the Dome Offset helps a little and you can force the dome to the right place.. but it gradually rotates out of sync because the top OTA is riding so high. SGPs dome geometry sucks (I assume) but it's the better one so far. If push comes to shove I'll turn slaving off and manually nudge it to keep things ticking along. Hope to solve properly eventually.
Yeah. I feel like straight up and down it lines up, but once it rotates, it's going to have a tight tolerance. I was hoping to image both at the same time, like a nice widefield shot with a close-up of some interesting feature. I suppose time will tell. NINA devs say their dome parameters are superior to ASCOM device hub. Guess it'll be time to try it out soon
Hi Dylan, can you tell me how to construct a Dark Libary. The problem isn't constructing them with various exposure lengths, my problem is exposures vs gain settings. If I recreate a dark from for every filter with every exposure and then every single gain setting, I won't have enough time im my life to enjoy the hobby. There has to be a better way. How do you construct your dark libary?
Live stacking is definitely the way of the future. We did something like this w/ one of the scopes at our observatory for public nights last summer: Hook a color camera up to a large screen and zoom around the sky taking/stacking color exposures. We were doing it due to covid b/c no one could go into the obs itself and use eyepieces, but it worked so well it'll likely become the norm even if life ever goes back to normal.
A flexible setup! To me, it would be perfectly rational to guide at extreme focal lengths for a primary wider field refractor. Should be very precise! I do something similar, My esprit 100 is reduced to f3.6 and is just shy of my evoguide 50 ED fl which i also shoot through sometimes.
@@DylanODonnell WOW!😳 I'm looking at getting the Celestron OAG for my c8 and was told that my 120mm mini wouldnt cut it! proof is in the pudding. Cheers
My rig is starting to look a lot like yours. C11 Edge in a NexDome on a massive EQ mount (mine's a CEM120). So now I think I need to put a refractor on top. Just wondering if there's enough clearance for both scopes to see through the shutter for any sky position. It looks like the shutter is barely wide enough.
seriously considering between the 82ed and 72ed, keep hearing people saying with the cost of 82ed + red/ff might as well get the esprit, would you agree?
Hold on one moment mate. At 8:58 you say you have never receive a telescope in a Pelican case. Bad news, you still haven’t. I mean, it appears to be a nice case all the same with a molded interior. Thanks for the review.
Hi Dylan. My name is Ed and I'm located In Va Beach Va USA. A few nights ago I used my Nikon P900 and recorded several off the wall still shots. Is it possible to send them to you for your review.? I'm happy to give permission to have them on your channel if appropriate. I suspect something was off because my camera should not have had the angle to catch whatever it is. Ed
I've done this meme before, albeit with a smaller FL of 750 on the big scope guiding the smaller scope. Still, it works really nice. I mean, I'm not going to buy a guide scope for my guide scope when I want to image off my guide scope... right?
