We are back working on the Skyway TA 26" BMX Cruiser! Since it's the second video in this build, how far can we go? We definitely had plans to do a lot but as always in Bernie's Garage, things didn't go quite as planned. We seemed to say, "The buggah no can fit!" quite a bit unfortunately. See what gave us the most trouble and what we were able to accomplish in this 2.0 video! Thanks for watching!

Ok, I finished this movie, lol. Here are my thoughts.. I still drink from the hose when I'm doing yard work in the summer and it's 115 degrees here. I like the all black tires with the blue and red wheels. They look great. I like the black seat fine, but another color may look cool. But I agree, I like black tires best. Good job on the freewheel. LOTS of grease, and never over-tighten. A stuck freewheel can be a full day's battle. You don't need a washer with the chain tensioner, but it helps protect the tensioner from getting scratched up. The traditional wheel axle you mentioned is a male axle (it sticks out), and your new hub is female. Female hubs are much easier to get the wheel slammed in the dropout because you can take the bolts out and just drop the wheel down without having to pull on the chain. You'll appreciate the ease once you get the chain on! The Euro BB cup threads are opposite of pedals. The left pedal is reverse threaded, but the right BB cup is reverse threaded (remember right/reverse). Great job troubleshooting the tight threads with the other cup! At that point, I would have taken the frame into the LBS to use a thread chaser (someone mentioned that already in another comment). You were right you shouldn't have to force that BB cup on. It seems to have worked out fine for you, but something was definitely wonky since that other bb cup went right on. Was there paint inside the bb on the threads? Sometimes companies don't mask that area off and get paint in there, which can cause problems. Those conical washers (not sure if that's what they're called) on the brake pads, I always change the small one and big one around so the small one is on the inside. This makes the brake arms stick out just a little less than if the big ones are on the inside. Next time you take those brakes off the posts, I recommend putting some grease on the posts (not the inside where the bolt goes, just the outside). Those brake cable ferrules come in slightly different sizes because the outer cable housing can be just slightly thicker with some brands, like yours. I'd buy a cheap assorted pack from Amazon and you'll probably find one that fits on the cable fine. Beautiful bike!!!

If we lived near you, you would be in all of our videos! We'd call you the sensei! Thank you so much for sharing all of this awesome info. I had no idea there was such a thing as a thread chaser so now I do! I think that would have been the best thing to do. We filmed another video today on the brakes and you are probably going to wince at what I did today....but I didn't see this comment ahead of time! Thank you also for the video on the brake parts. Hey fellas, bike looks GREAT!!! Colors are Sharp!!! Don’t think I’ve ever Sern a Skyway up close but the Stature of it being low slung reminds me of a RACE cruiser which is a look I’m VERY ATTRACTED to!!!😎🤙🏽 When you fellas somewhat hit a wall with the bottom bracket I thought I was watching myself in a video…lol!! Unforeseen issues are maddening at times… how you keep your composure is beyond me… a Wrench surely would have be HURLED thru the back wall of my garage if I went thru all that!!! All jokes aside, Have a really great Holliday with you and yours, be safe and thanks for making my day with your humorous antics, Blessings, Vic 😎🤙🏽

My threads in both of my Skyways were tougher that they should have been also. I believe it's the frame, NOT the MCS bottom brackets. Ideally running a thread chaser through the frame first would have been the ticket!
@cruisinginthe808

I need to see what this thread chaser is all about! Is that a special tool you can use to clean up the threads?? That sounds like it was just what I needed. Thanks for sharing that and for watching!

My local bicycle shop could not get it on weather. They had to retap or retrue it, so it must be a factory issue. Thanks guys love the show

Hey guys. Love your stuff. I put em on while I'm putting bikes together or endlessly fiddling with them. This vid just made me laugh cause I had the exact same thing happen with that mcs red bottom bracket and fixed it pretty much the same way but cleaned the trouble side out with a toothbrush n solvent. Seems like the finish on the part comes off n starts the orocess of stripping the threads. Yal did the right thing cause ya woulda messed up ur frame if ya cranked it. I couldn't find a thing online about it. Way to go, prob solving again. This kinda crap happens all the time n I have only done 5 bikes. Keep up the rad stuff u do on the details of the components you love like the bullet stuff cause it's often hard to find details on anything. Most the youtubes are promos. Sorry for the long comment. I been watching yer stuff for a year now n meant to comment. Will etherington.

That's what I'm talking about! Wheels are sexy! Also, therein lies the non-uniformity of bicycle parts. There are several sizes of cable end caps. You're probably off a size and by just mm. Crazy stuff. That's why I order all sizes for my builds just in case. Anyway, also another tip if you haven't done it before, toe-in your pads to prevent any squealing. Just slide a credit card on the rear of the pads and tighten down. Loving the build guys!
@cruisinginthe808
@cruisinginthe808 Год назад
Great tips! Yeah, I need to stock up on those smaller parts like that. One thing I'm learning about building my own bike is that I need to think of everything. I need every single part down to each individual screw or cap. I have to clean out my area where I want to work on my bikes so that I can house all of these little things that you need for a build. How about when you cut the cable it gets crimped a little 😅 I was thinking the other day of taking an old cable or piece of welding rod and putting it in the housing before cutting it to help the keep the housing from getting crushed as much. Might be cool to find blue brake cable ferrules. I have blue SE Cub with tan walls on my 1996 mongoose expert pro 24 inch they definitely aren’t as clean as black tires but not as bad as other colored tires. Only problem is that they only seen to come in black wall but that might look cool and tie in with the seat. I just want to say thanks showing how it really goes when building a bike. I’d rather watch 10 videos of what actually with challenges that one of everything going together like legos. Keep them coming. Thanks for the info on the SE cub tires! Appreciate that! Also want to thank you for the kind comment about our videos. Bernie and I just want to show how it goes, the good and the bad. We're not trying to make anyone think we're master builders or mechanics or anything so it's nice to hear that you appreciate our honesty about our builds. I'll be sure to get my kids their gifts this year! Haha! They are actually getting the gift of being able to go to college so I think even if they got nothing for the next four years, they'd be good! The amount of bikes I could get for just one semester worth of tuition is staggering! Ha! Thanks for watching another one!

@@cruisinginthe808 wow kids in college. I guess I thought you guys were a lot younger. Ya we can all watch Parktool videos for pure information. But you guys are entertaining and I feel like we’re gaining experience that is hard to get. Plus the details you put into the bikes are next level.

If you have a good sharp tool made for cutting brake cables, it will cut right through without any problem.

@@TuesdaysTurn I have the parktool for cutting housing, cable and crimping the cable ends and ferrules. I’ve noticed if you let the housing move a little it cuts off at a slight angle which is less crushes but the plastic tubing inside always gets squished. I use the crimping feature to straighten out the metal and plastic but still have work a cable through with force the first time. If something was in there to help hold its shape might have nicer product. But definitely would need a good tool that cuts what it’s supposed to plus whatever is inside.
