This will probably be the longest video you will ever see to just put brakes on a bike. As usual in Bernie's Garage, things didn't go as planned and this ended up being a much longer video than we anticipated and we apologize for that. I do a ton of things wrong here when installing these #bulseyebmx brakes and I truly look like I have never done this before, even though I have. I hesitated in posting this, mainly because I look really stupid at times, but there are some good parts in it and Bernie and I are going to be as real as possible with you. We're going to show you the good and the bad, even if we don't look so good in the end. Thanks for watching and supporting the Brochanics!

Aayy! The Hawaii Homies!! Thanks for the shout!! I think the rear cable housing should be longer (look at 103.40 and it seems too short). It almost always has a slight bend to it, which should give more tension on the cable. And when you tighten the right-side bolt on the cable, pull the cable back towards the rear of the bike right before you tighten the bolt down. Side note, you mentioned the stainless spokes and being in Hawaii, assuming you're referring to the humid climate.. you may have done this already, but if not, put TriFlow on each spoke nipple and let it soak down in there. It will help them from rusting and/or getting seized up. I like to do like 1/4 of the wheel at a time, let it soak in for an hour or so, and then rotate the wheel and do the next section. Oh and my vote, NO on the white cranks, lol. CHEERS!!

Wassup fellas? This is Geno from San Jose Ca. I just want to offer up my humble opinion. Your build is pretty bad ass and I understand the delema you were going through. That one or two parts needed to make it happen. traditionaly the Skyway bmx bike, specifically the 24" cruiser came with Red line flight cranks 180 's. Keeping true to the old school theme you should do whatever it takes and how ever long to get your cranks RL powdered blue. It would be off the hook! I do remember back it the day seeing the all red white and blue themed Skyway with powdered white cranks with skyway on them ( no Red line). I could be wrong though. Anyways I am 52 y.o . and still bmx ride a custom 29er RedLine. I ride every other day. If I'm not out on the BMX, I'm on me custom Santa Cruz Fixie set up urban style. For your brake cables try spraying your lube heavy into a rag and wrap the juicy rag around the cable as you feed it into the cable housing. Way less mess and it ensures the entire cable gets evenly coated. .

If you have a bench grinder that is a great way to finish off the ends of the brake cable housings. Kind of like using a hand file but much quicker. It will allow you to grind it flat and past any "crimps" that occur during cutting it to length. 😀

Ope!✨ I’m here to cruise with you guys! Big ups to both you for always bringing the positive in the situation at hand. Das wasssup! IMO Looks like the skyway has a modern frame geometry. To me, it allows for different riding styles to accommodate for those who ride with seat “slammed” or “high seat” first. Then it allows for different height riders second. That’s my thoughts. I’d still love to see red cranks on this particular build. Red cranks would be an excellent compliment to the red seat post. I’m thinking something is gonna pop up. Stay positive! Emery cloth works great if you have a sticky brake arm. If one or both arms do not pivot freely use some emery cloth to clean the brake studs. They sometimes have paint on them from the factory. Then place some grease on them with I see you guys did! 😀

Hey guys, anodizing Aluminum is fairly normal process in most places where companies doing manufacturing that develop fixtures. I just kicked off work today to anodize (2) small plates (4'X7"X1/2"). Cost came in at $200. Done this many times in many colors. Color matching is challenging so keep that in mind. Maybe get some chrome color aluminum cranks and send out to get this done. I'm in Michigan and could connect you to the smaller shops that do one offs. I really enjoy your content. Post your contact and can send you information. Tim

In my view, the Skyway's seat post in red is too much, it would be better in chrome. Overall, it's a very nice bike, even though the repop Skyway version frame and fork with a BB USA bottom bracket and 1" fork is more close to the old school deal

Hey guys! Had lots of laughs along with you both watching this one. The bike is looking beautiful! I like the idea of blue or red cranks and can visualize the chrome if necessary. I don’t think I would go with white, just my opinion. With the tires and seat, black may be an option. Hopefully you got the call from Planet and have what you’ve been looking for. I sat down with a some pieces of left over break housing. I tried leaving in break cable, welding wire and bailing wire. The results were anything spectacular. Really the one I liked the best was the bailing wire because it cut the easiest. Right after the cut I figured that filing the end with wire still in there worked nice. Also stainless welding tig wire works well to straighten out the end. In the past I use to use something to crush the housing into what was usually a square then just keep pushing on the new cable till it came out . Not sure if making the break cable slide with the least restriction possible will make breaking noticeably better but I can’t ever go back 😂. Anyway have you looked at the mission v2 cranks ? Albe’s has them in red, white, blue, black and chrome 170mm or 175mm. Maybe they would be acceptable while you wait for what you want.

PeddlePower has a set of red anodized Teqnique cranks. Tell ‘em Joey from @customLEDbikes sent ya;) I almost bought them for my Bassett build, but the chrome looked better on my chrome frame

I saw the Technique cranks but I'm not fond of the giant welds on the front of the cranks. I think I prefer a smoother crank arm but I appreciate the suggestion!

Yes, they are a bit chunky. I would wait for the flights in candy blue or red and use the chrome 180s that Bernie offered you to get that bike on the road. The suspense must be tuff for ya. Guess you can wait to know how it rides.

Hey guys, really enjoying your videos. Turned 50 in January and lucky me I found your channel. So I was mesmerized by the ra-26 but thought I was still young enough so I bought the ra-24. Great bike but definitely needed bigger I soon found out. Picked up a kink 26” drifter and I feel a lot more stable. So now I just ordered the white ra26 frame no forks. What do you think if I was to go with the chrome landing gear forks instead of Bottema or race inc. kind of want to be a little different than the norm. Anyways thanks for the motivation to get me back into bmx. Wouldn’t have done it without seeing your channel. I live in Utah so we got great places to ride in the city and the trails. By the way, now my wife wants a 26” so I think it’s something we’re going to be able to do together.

Aloha Tim! Man, thank you so much for sharing that with us! The cool part of all this is you can do whatever you want….it’s your bike! If you want to be different and use Landing Gear forks, do it! It just really comes down to what you want. You get can get inspiration from different places but in the end, it’s your bike, you are going to ride it, and you’re the only person you need to satisfy. Loving this Skyway build but it seems to me that, given how you've been alternating the blue & red, the seatpost should really be blue? Frame (blue)/seat post clamp (red)/seat post (blue).....just sayin'. Perhaps also consider whitewalls for the tires? Regardless, it's a sweet ride! 🤙

I don't have access to a lot of powder coaters on my island. I have this one guy I used but he does it as a side thing and doesn't always respond. I do have some coming from Planet soon!

Did you just fit the housing perfectly? I'm wondering how the housing would stay secure? I did also think about drilling right through the guides but didn't want to mess up the frame. Thanks for the idea!

Just use a drill bit and cordless drill to ream out the end of cable if frayed from cutting. Then lube up with tri lube and push threw with and air gun. That way there will not be any tags to fray the cable up.

That is a great tip Kurt! I didn't even think about shooting some air through the cable guide to push out anything that might have been left. But yeah, if you use a drill like you said, then I can see some tiny fragments getting in there. Thanks for the great tip and for watching!

you may want to add some grease to the brake bolts! And make sure the wheel is aligned properly, it makes brake adjustment much easier!

You know, that's what I thought but in a Park Tool video about brakes, they said not to use any grease in the brake bolt, to use some sort of threadlocker instead. Yeah, the wheels have to be aligned and stupid me didn't think of that until much later. Thanks for the comments and for watching another one!

My second comment won't post, sorry if this shows up twice.. Is 170mm too short for you? (You commented that the frame sits low, so 170mm might actually be a good idea.) If not, search for the Promax CF-2 Crankset. It comes in red and blue. Powers BMX has the red in-stock, and some other shops I'm unfamiliar with have blue, like rocketcitybmx. Good luck!

When someone says no offense it usually is followed up by something that will offend....but it's all good. Bernie and I have never tried to act like we were master mechanics. We are just some guys who enjoy working on bikes, sometimes learning as we go. I'm sure a lot of what we do can be done a lot faster, but we also enjoy talking and hanging out too while we're at it. True, but that defeats the whole purpose of coming together to work on bikes. We could easily do this faster but part of the fun of working on the bikes is to get together and talk. When the camera is off and we need to get stuff done, yes, it's way faster because now we have two sets of hands. But our videos we post are also to show the process, both the good and the bad. If you like that kind of stuff, then stay tuned. If you don't, that's fine too. Maybe there is another channel out there where they can work on bikes a lot quicker and get to the point faster.
