We got a special project at the shop this week! Our good friend JC from JC Customs CNC brought by his 1955 Chevy Belair. Well, he brought over a body and a chassis and told us to smush them together for him. He had one request though. JC wanted this classic Chevy sitting on the floor. We're no stranger to slammed rides, so we got to work getting this Belair down on its rockers. We started the process by cutting out the floor pan to be able to give this Chevy a proper body drop. We took the grinder around the wheel wells too, so that the metal doesn't destroy the tires when JC inevitably does a burnout with the suspension aired out. Once we got the frame of the car sitting as low as physically possible, we got to work installing our air ride suspension. We took our measurements from the Air Lift Performance Builder Series shocks and got to work fabricating the proper mounts in the front and the rear. What we ended up with is a slammed Belair with a HUGE amount of suspension adjustability. We know JC is going to be stoked with the outcome and we can't wait to see this Chevy with a big blown LS sitting in the front, and smoke pouring out of the back!

Just a suggestion start your plasma cut in the center of your bolt hole then go out to cut your ring for your bolt. It will prevent the blow out of the outer ring. Dang I love watching you guys build killer stuff!

When you do a body drop like this how much head roon do you lose?

It depends on how far you need to drop the body on the chassis. You're generally going to lose at least a couple inches to get the car sitting on the rockers when it's aired out.

That is a great question but unfortunately we don't have the answer lol The coldest it gets down here in Florida is 60 degrees during the dead of winter. I would hit up the guys at Airlift! They'd definitely be able to give you the temperature tolerances on the materials they use!

It's pretty but needs some of those fab skills to fix all the "Nova things" chassis and steering wise! ;)

This is the kind of build that i wrestle with. Like, I appreciate the fabrication and problem solving but I can’t stand a car with a body drop. I just find it a great way to spend a ton of money and effort to make a car pretty undriveable. Like I said, I appreciate the engineering. I’ve worked on cars I thought we’re in very poor taste but were fun to work on, but basically rendered the car useless and annoying to drive, at best, and super uncomfortable. And my god, the vibration with the hard mounted body! 🤣

Do you just worry about clearance when finding the position of the shocks? Or is eventual rideability a factor too (as in comfort and handling)?

If this was going to be a daily driver or something more performance based we'd definitely be taking angles into account a bit more. But JC's overall plan with this is to cruise to shows and rip burnouts. So we were more concerned with making sure the bags being place symmetrically and having a safe space to actuate. If the shock geometry looked WAY too extreme we would have reconsidered our placement, but everything fell into place pretty well so we weren't concerned!

fabrication looks great like always. but the suspension travel looks limited by the new setup. at least it looked like it in the video. is he able to remove those big wheels without unbolting the bags? i like the unibody design. i had that same idea in mind when i body drop my station wagon, i just haven't seen it done until now.

I am doing the exact same thing on my 1950 Ford. I made it so the body still bolts to the frame though. I intended on using universal 1/4” poly body mounts, but I thought about just going the Uni-body route. Any thoughts on the Cons of “Uni-body”ing it vs body mounts?

thats how most people do it, easier for maintenance down the road being able to pull chassis out. Just takes a little more work with the floors and mounts obviously.

@@benz88one3 I’ve “borrowed” a lot of design ideas from Roadster Shop chassis I’ve looked at online. I built all new frame/body structure, floors, etc. So at this point, I’ve got it designed to be removable, but I could just as easily forgo the mounts and make it solid. I was told before, it was a bad idea, because it wasn’t designed as a Unibody and might end up stressing body panels, maybe damaging bodywork. I have a Gen3 5.0/6spd in it, IRS front, 8.8 rear, but I don’t think 460hp is gonna be twisting the car in two.

One major downfall would be in an accident. Factory unibody cars have crush zones built in and are modular for easy repair. A custom car like this would be totaled depending on what type of accident it incurs.

The shop does have AC, but it's so hot and the shop is so big that it doesn't always do the job with all the fabricating going on. We try to keep that shop fan as much as possible, but sometimes it's gonna come on!

Nice work! That car is unmatched laying rockers. I’m working on a similar project with my 57 hard top on a Scotts chassis. What wheel offsets are you running on the 55, they look perfect. I’m assuming 22’s right?

Yeah. They're Detroit Steel. Not sure on the offset. You'd have to ask JC about that!
