"Slap Shot" Revisited with Dave Hanson

Forty years after it was released in 1977, the movie "Slap Shot" holds up as one of the true classics among feature-length sports films. Its' comical depiction of a minor league hockey team, resorting to violent play to gain popularity in a declining factory town, still resonates with audiences around the world. Much of the film's success has to do with Paul Newman's brilliant performance as aging player-coach Reggie "Reg" Dunlop. But the movie might never have achieved its truly iconic status without the bespectacled, brawling characters known as the Hanson Brothers played by former Johnstown Jets players Steve and Jeff Carlson and David Hanson. Primal Interviews host Paul Guggenheimer talked recently with David Hanson in Pittsburgh, where he now works as the General Manager of the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

I'm glad they used real hockey players, bc their ability to skate really made the scenes believable and authentic.

As a young kid I worked as an usher and saw the movie 100+ times. Absolutely hilarious movie. Went on to actually play the game, but the best thing I ever did was take the original movie poster once it left the theater. Still have it framed 42 years later in my TV room.

It will never get old, I watch it at least once each year. Captured the love and passion of those who didn't make it to major league but still have hope but so few make it, the up and down of the season! Some of the fights turned real by enthusiasm and or old debts from unfinished fights. Georges Hill's stunned face when Hanson knocked a player in the scene when he turned the guy around. That player who provoked many fight situations but refused to drop the gloves. Broken nose as a result, he never came back! The fight in the public stands based when the 3 Carlson bros and Hanson did it from throw soft drink

fatboyrowing - A lot of the movie was filmed in Syracuse at the Onandaga County War Memorial. Living in Rochester, I was a big Amerks fan and hated the Syracuse Eagles at the time in the late 1970s. Well, we had this booster club trip to Syracuse one night. As the bus pulled into town close to the arena, some guys on board decided to drop trou and moon the locals. Gee, I wonder where they got that idea!

As a guy who grew up playing hockey around the time this was shot, it has always been my favorite movie since it was first released. As he said, more truth than fiction. A good buddy of mine played on the '80 Gold medal team then he went on to play for the NY Rangers, on an off night he was sitting a bar in CT and Paul Newman came in and started chatting it up with him. He said they had a great talk and Paul said he had never had more fun making a movie than he did with these guys because as hockey players they just treated him as one of the guys. Paul continued to stay in touch and attend weddings thru the years of his teammates. Best years of my life as well

I saw this at the drive-in at San Juan Capistrano, California, when it first came out. I loved this movie and still do - a very underrated work. George Roy Hill, better known for The Sting, created a wonderful movie here that remains unknown to many to this day.

A great interview, what an articulate guy. Had the opportunity to play hockey in the facility he was working. Legendary movie.

Loved this movie, and this interview was great! To answer the question of why the movie has such resonance these many years later, it’s because of the “trueness” of the actual actors who really lived that life.

I still love this film. It is one of the standout films of my youth. The Hansons were just mental and great characters. They just had to be true to life. I have watched Slapshot with my sons love and they love it too. We are from the UK and so never skated or played hockey but did plenty of contact sports so I can relate to it even so. Great fun and great entertainment.

This film was just one of many that will always bring me back to the great old days of growing up. Being a huge hockey fan and player, my friends and I still to this day drop lines from the film like they are going out of style. My mother grew up not far from Johnstown Pa in Cambria County so the added bonus that the town scenes in the film remind me of our family trips out to PA to see my grandparents. Now I'm in the mood to watch the film, time to go and put on the foil. Thanks Dave for your epic contribution to this gem of a film and hope that you're doing well brother.
