Bought an original 6' Sc Fi and set it up as a quad. Wasn't feeling the love after a few surfs and it sat in the garage for a year. I needed a second board for a camping trip so I took the Sc Fi. I set it up as a thruster and loved it. Found out it likes back foot surfing and you've got to have that back foot in the sweet spot. waves were 4-6 ft Oz.

Hey Wooly Nice work again mate, what fins in FCS2 ya reckon (thruster set up)? Do you think the LFT goes better in WA conditions more than Helium? Thanks mate for your work and info!!
@WoolyTV
@WoolyTV 3 года назад
Hi Trev, Thanks! I think it depends on the type of board too, not just the construction. I do like the LFT as its seems to perform more like a standard PU (well sort of) so you can surf it up into overhead surf. I would just go a set of performers in the FCS range, I think they are such a good all round template. If you go the PCC (carbon) then you can ride one size down from your standard in the PC range. Hope that helps If you need boards or fins just hit up the guys in the shop and we can get them out to you ASAP. Cheers Wooly shop@starsurf.com.au or 08 95354500

Hey Wooly! Great Review - your reviews are always awesome and glad you are back! I am a nobody, so please feel free to ignore, and I am suggesting to ignore - haha! I think your surfing looks better on the Hydroshort. The speed of the Hydroshort seems to let you go in and out of the pocket with more opportunities to play on the wave. The Sci-Fi 2.0 looked great in bigger waves, but outside of those it seems liked you were never getting too far ahead of the pocket a bit owing to a lack of speed. It is interesting that you felt more comfortable on the Sci-Fi 2.0. It seemed like the Hydroshort speed you had more flow, and this one was a bit more erratic. Again you surf levels above me, and I am a nobody. Have you consider throwing quads on the Sci-Fi 2.0 to give it a bit more speed. I have 5' 8" Cymatic, which I believe has similarities to the Sci Fi 2.0. I learned that I am not good enough for the Cymatic. I can surf it, I love how it paddles, handles steep drops etc. At first I loved it because you can really control the board, but this is not good me as I am not flowing with the board as I can overly control it. I tend to jerk around because I can. My other boards tend keep me more in check and because of that I actually surf them better with better flow. It took me a little to recognize this. The Cymatic does excite me, but I am not ready for it. Cheers! Jamie
@WoolyTV
@WoolyTV 3 года назад
Hi Jamie Always good to get feedback! Ok, the Sci-fi was more reliable than the Hydroshort. I could go fast on the Hydroshort but found it had some limitations when doing some turns. The main one was that I did find it catching a little up the front edge (beyond my front foot), where as the Sci-Fi didn't do that and allowed me to nail a variety of top turns in a variety of wave conditions. I believe the Sci-Fi suited my style of surfing better and I think it would cover a wider range of surfers. I did want to run a quad set up in the Sci-Fi but didnt for the review. I may do that down the track and add a clip to IG. Thanks for the input

@@WoolyTV thanks good to know! any thoughts on why this happens? Assuming the rocker or the width or both? thanks again!
@WoolyTV
@WoolyTV 3 года назад
@@jamiemacmahan3417 Yeah its usually 1. Entry rocker 2. Rail shape 3. Plan shape BUT other surfers wont experience the same as I do...... why? I have quiet a wide stance and Im tall so my front foot will be further forward than other surfers. Also you must always keep in mind that I usually surf the demo boards for approx 10 hours (try to have 5 x 2 hour surfs) and some boards are very different to what I normally ride. Give me 100 hours surfing them and I would adjust my style to suit the board and probably avoid a few things that I do in the first 10 hours of surfing. Make sense?
@jamiemacmahan3417
@jamiemacmahan3417 3 года назад
@@WoolyTV Hey wooly - yes makes perfect sense and common sense - thanks! You bring up a great point - adapting/learning the board characteristics versus moving onto the next board? It is a loaded question - how long should one try to make a board work versus moving (no answer needed)? It is probably experienced based, where your 10hrs is significant and the right amount.I have been all over the spectrum with trying boards. And of course -there is the grass is greener syndrome - haha! I have read online about working with a shaper on one board until magic happens. Others suggesting trial and error a range of boards and shapers. I think you recognize quickly how well the board paddles. I think determining how well it catches waves is relatively easy - though can be nuanced at time. The harder one is performance as this needs a range of waves. I have done the 1 step forward, 2 steps back with surfing and boards. My favorite board has been 5' 6" twinfin Album Plasmic because of how it generates speed, the size, where my feet land, etc. It does this cool thing when you catch a wave but your are in the whitewater, it accelerates in the whitewater and gets a head of it (so cool), and gets me back in the pocket. In the pocket, the Plasmic doesn't feel uber fast in the pocket like the Hydroshort. Though the Plasmic doesn't paddle as well as some of my other boards, it catches waves very well and handles various entries in the break well. It is the board I grab for most beach breaks. Interestingly, my second favorite has been 6' 10" single fin egg. Even though it doesn't have the performance nor paddle as well as my 6'8" SS&B or even the Hydroshort, I love surfing the single fin, especially in steep, barreling breaks, and I would have thought this is the board to grab for those conditions - haha! The Hydroshort is an interesting board, it is probably the board that let's me do everything I want and can handle most conditions, but it just doesn't excite, even though I surf it well - haha - go figure! I have learned most surfboards are really fun if they enough volume. Thanks again!

I'm 5'10 and 165 lbs with a 5/4 wetsuit. Been surfing the 5.8 scifi2 at 29 liters. used the EA black stix as I was using those on my hydroshort. The scifi2 is super fast a result. However, on hollower steeper low-tide waves I was having problems bottom turning. It felt like the board just wants to go straight most of the time. It turns fine on an open face but you can definitely feel the QISC make the board want to go straight and fast. Did you craig anderson fins make a difference for you? What did the fins change do in terms of board sensation?
@WoolyTV
@WoolyTV 3 года назад
Hi mate, I wouldnt go to the Craig Anderson fins. I usually only use the Black Stix fins when I need to generate speed. If you are having problems bottom turning then I would reduce the size of the fins to a standard fin in a small or a medium. Im 190lbs so I can get away with a large fin at times but I much prefer to use medium fins. Look a set of Neutrals from the Legacy series - that should help you out. futuresfins.com/products/f4-legacy
