There might be 50M enslaved people now vs the 3.9M in the southern region of the US in the 1860s. But that's obscuring the fact that the entire free population of the South was only 8.2M total. That's means 45% of the population of the South was slaves. Legal slaves. In some states it was 57% of the population. There are more enslaved people than ever before but slavery is no longer so bad that every other person in your state is a slave.
