Nordic and Greek mythology came from Slavic. Greeks invaded southern parts of Europe by it embracing majority of culture the found there. Nordic and Slavic people both have access to Nord see,both lived next to each other for many thousands of years so that connection is not surpisingly strong. What is unfortunate is that we hear much about Slavic one because of politics,admitting richness of their culture doesn't go along with the Slavofobia western Euope has for them for so long. Catholic church promised it will expand its borders to East 2 centuries ago,and there they are nowdays..almost on the very border of Russia. They managed turning one Slavic nation against other,in the end they are gainin cause borther is killimg brother.

This is an extremely high quality video, I hope you make a more in the same vein. Slavic mythology is confusing because it incorporates polytheism, monotheism and dualism at the same time. Some of the comments below mention how Perun was not considered the main deity. This is correct but it's not a simple explanation. Slavs spread throughout Europe, and while the hierarchy generally did not change, different tribes worshipped different gods for various reasons. For instance; Serbs worshipped Dabog because they believed they came from him and Serbian Dabog became a very different entity from the traditional Dabog, as he mantled both Yarilo and Veles at the same time. Both of these gods were still worshipped in their original portfolios, and it's uncertain why Dabog specifically changed. Serbian Dabog was represented as the wolf shepard, and he very closely resembles Germanic Wotan and Ossetian Tutyr. During the warm months he was represented as the good sun god, since Dabog and Svarozic are thought to be the same entity (Svarozic being his "last name", denoting that he is the son of Svarog). But during the winter months when the sun was gone, he was represented as a limping old man with a wolf at his side. He turned from a caring god to a generally dark and vengeful god. Because of him, people avoided killing wolves as it was considered kinstrife (since both the Serbs and the Wolves were believed to come from Dabog). The Polabian Slavs venerated Triglav/Svetovid, while these gods took minor positions in the other regions where Slavs lived. Another interesting note is that while Perun is generally considered the "war god", almost all the male Slavic gods were considered war gods. This is likely because different tribes venerated specific tribal gods, and they would attribute war to their tribal god. Lastly, Rod was also considered the "supreme god". But while the others gods took an interest in the affairs of mortals, Rod was closer to the Hindu "Godhead", an oversoul which represented the absolute and ultimate reality. "Rod" also means "kin" and is the root word for "RODiti" - to give birth, "naROD" - people, "izROD" - degenerate(one who is not a part of the kin), "RODa" - stork etc. Thank you for the videos Jan, I've been following you for years and I can safely say that you're the glue that binds all the Slavs together. Slava!

Fun Fact: Perun is the God of Thunder like Thor, however he is not the head of the Slavic Pantheon. Instead it was Svarog the Allfather and Creator of the Gods. This is a common misconception because of Vladimir the Great of the Rus, who before conversion of the Eastern Slavs chose to worship Perun instead of Svarog cause he was seen as the most powerful god when measured in brute strength just like Thor is in Norse mythology. He made this decision because in the twilight years of both slavic and norse mythology they chose to worhsip Thor/Perun in the hopes that he was the strongest to help fight back Christianity. Unfortunately the Slavs did not have runes like the Norse did so record keeping was significantly less, however I do believe in some chronicle (potentially the Primary Russian Chronicle) the author states that when Vladimir the Great in the end chose Christianity he ordered the temple he built for the gods to be destroyed and instead build a church and the statues of the gods to be pulled out dragged through the streets and destroyed as well. The chronicle mentions that in the middle of the temple was the statue of Perun signifying that he was worshipped the most but not that he was the main god and it fits with other pagan trends of worshipping the god of thunder and strength before full conversion. If I am mistaken feel free to correct me!

Dude... Slavs and their culture and religion evolved over centuries and they settled from the most eastern to the very mid of europe. From the todays Hamburg in northern Germany to the eastern steppes in Russia. It completely depends on what time and place you look at. The western Slavs for example worshipped many different Gods as main gods changing from tribe to tribe. Perun, Triglav, Svantevit, The wars between those tribes were like battles of the different slavic gods they worshipped. And they still worshipped those old gods, when Poles, Russians and so on already were christians for centuries. Polish Lords even participated in Crusades against the last pagan Slavic realms in northern Germany in late 12th century. And before they adapted a Pantheon at all, they worshipped many many spirits of nature and elements. They lived in a world, populated by monsters, spirits, ghosts and living things. More comparable to northern american tribes than to greek or germanic pantheon.
@boluguzici9441
@boluguzici9441 Год назад
I would just like to correct you on the runes bit. Slavs did have written accounts of their life and beliefs, but those were mostly written on birch bark which decomposes over time. It didn't help that Christian priests were ordered to destroy any form of paganism, including the birch bark texts. I don't think any of them survived, but there are accounts that they in fact existed.

But In the beginning, Rod was the main god, but as the invasions began, skirmishes with other Slavic clans, and with the Germans, of course. From then on Perun, became the most important God in the east, while Svetovit became the most important God in the west of Slavism. They are the same Gods. Weles, on the other hand, I think in the 6th century, came from the territories of Rus, and became an expensive God, right after Perun, however, he was not the God of warriors like Perun, but was the God of the people

Amazing video! Hope you will continue this series. There are a lot of books and sources, not fully alligned with each other. I have read a bit different stories about what you presented here. Swaróg and Perun were the same person - Swaróg existed during the peace, but when war came and he was wearing war gear, he was turning into Perun. Another story is with Czarnobóg. He was defeated and chained under the ground. Weles got his lands(underground) to rule. Czarnobóg remained chained in the dungeons, but was trying to escape. Every time when he was pretty close to break the chains, the Earth was frightened and ready to his arrival. That's why winter come. Swaróg every year was entering that dungeons and reforge chains once again. Then spring come, because Earth wasn't frightened anymore, as Czarnobóg was imprisoned again. I love Slavic mythology. I think its really beautiful and I don't know why we do not learn that much about it in schools, when it's closer to ourselves and just more beautiful. Instead we have romance mythology etc.

There are also mentions of the allfather God being Jar, who brought the universe into existence from a cosmic egg. (However this is disputed) There is also mention of the tree of life spanning from Nawia (land of the dead) and a bird that is its guardian circling it here, through jawia (the waking plane or "physical reality) through Prawia where the branches are (the lawful/ proper land.) This is where the Gods resided and the souls of the dead eventually went. What is insteresting is that slavs believed in reincarnation that the souls of the dead passed through nawia back into jawia as flaming birds (or just birds) only to ascend into Prawia. its a distinct aesthetic and a distinct view of the supernatural and metaphysical which I find alluring and amazing and typical of modern slavic thought about life, death, and the supernatural and our relationship to it.

It is fascinating how Slavic god are similar/analog to Greek and Roman (or Pre-Roman: Latino-Faliscian and Osco-Umbrian) gods. Perun the master of god, the thunder holder = Zeus for Greeks, Jupiter for Romans. Veles the god of underground = Hades for Greeks, Pluto (not the Disney dog) for Romans. Morana = Persefone for Greeks, Proserpina for Romans. Svarog = Efesus for Greeks, Vulcano for Romans. Belobog/Cernobog = Gianus the two-faced, Roman and pre-Roman god. After all, Greeks, Romans and Slavs are all Indo-European people that migrated from India many millennia ago. Thus, some corrispondences are expected.

@boguslav9502 Год назад
Perun = God of lightning and order (NOT THE KING GOD) that is the only major mistake in the comparison. That position goes to the allfather Svarog or Jar, depending on sources. IE peoples migrated into india, not from india. The genetic evidence is extremely strong for a migration into and then past india into the middle east. Although these events are extremely close to each other historically (sometimes less than 1000 years)

Они так звучат на славянских языках, а не то что автор преподнес с неправильными ударениями. В остальном - хорошее начинание, надо просвещать людей, чтобы помнили - КТО ИХ РОДНЫЕ БОГИ!

In my opinion all these gods were created by forgoting their purpose and meaning. At the beginig there were only few maby one. Same with traditions, they all had a logical meaning not esoteric.

The speaker’s pronunciation of most of the names of the gods and goddesses is atrocious! Belebog and Chernobog were not thought of as “good” and “evil” until the advent of christianization.

This is pure Russian and Ukrainian invented Slavic prehistoric history. The Slavs did not have gods, they had deities and a god who created everything. Perun and Veles were not gods, but deified mythical ancestors, protectors and progenitors of the race. For example, Perun is a mythical ancestor who taught his race how to make ore from earth, and tools or jewelry from ore, so he taught us how to use fire. That is why we identify him with the sun. And Veles is a mythical ancestor who taught his race how to make food from the earth, by planting a plant and feeding on it. That is why the bull is his symbol and a sacred animal needed for plowing. Stop learning the history of your ancestors through wikipedia or ukrainian nazi groups. And stop comparing the Slavs with the Greeks and Romans who were polytheists and heretics.
