Slayer has been misunderstood ever since they began. They've always talked about very controversial subjects in a very blunt manner. Because of that they have actually been accused of truly believing that way and even promoting it. And while there are a couple of members that have been in Slayer that do lean a little darker in thoughts, Tom Araya is Catholic and has always tried to put his spin in their Style lyrically. Makes for a very interesting listen.

Kudos to you both for quickly recognizing what this is. For or against, it makes one stop and think..

Araya was raised Catholic...Slayer has always been about an afront to the senses...to offend, to scare, to shock, this song is some of their best work and very underrated. Amazing that the “Evil Slayer” writes the most pro-life song ever...your reaction was great and hopefully gives others a new appreciation for Slayer.

my take on " sanctify lives of scorn " back in the " good ol days" when unwed pregnancy was taboo... peopel would secretly get abortions, so as to avoid the " scorn " of an illegitimate child being born... the " sanctify" is sort of a " removal of the problem" and hiding the " sin"

I love how y'all breakdown these lyrics. Slayers lyrics are deceptively deep and complex, OK some songs are just pretty straight forward (Necrophobic). Would love to hear more lyric breakdowns.

What’s funny is I learned to play this song on guitar a decade ago but this is the first time I’ve analyzed the lyrics. It just jumped up on my list of favorite Slayer songs. I would like to recommend Hatebreed - Supremacy of Self. It helped me get through some tough times when I was younger.

This is one major reason I LOVE SLAYER! They never hold back or sugarcoat. Hell even their musical sound and even solos are chaotic hell of hot mess reflecting the dark lyrics.

King and Hanneman were the lyricists, with Jeff's input being more geared around war and Kerry being more inclined towards religious and societal issues. Killer review guys, this was one of my all time favorite Slayer songs and you absolutely nailed it.

It was Dave Mustain from Megadeth who became Christian. Tom Arya was born and still identifies Catholic. Kerry King is a main lyric writer as well. Most of their lyrics are more social commentary than anything else ( all be it they talk about the darker aspects of humanity) .Some of Kerry's lyrics get anti Christian (without being pro Satan if you know what I mean).

People just think its all noise...no one ever really listens to what metal musicians are saying..and if they did they would understand the world a lot better...this song is brutal...yes, but its a brutal truth....but people hear the name SLayer and minds close. Take a listen to what they are saying...you would understand your children more and understand some of the pain in this world

Very astute analysis of the song's lyrics and meaning! I assumed that the line, "Crucify bastard son", would immediately turn y'all (I'm from the mountains of Alabama lol) off; my hats off for probing deeper despite the harsh wording...something that a lot of people are unable, or unwilling, to do (and not just as it pertains to music). I really enjoy your channel and find myself reliving those "first listen" moments vicariously through the two of you. You both seem to be pretty level-headed, honest, and open...refreshing traits for this day and age. Keep up the good work! I would like to suggest the band, Overkill...specifically anything from the Years Of Decay and/or Horrorscope albums. Both are absolute masterpieces of thrash metal from a group that's highly underrated (and are still tearin' it up to this day). Long live metal \m/

South of Heaven was a breakthru album for me when it comes to Slayer. I was still a teenager when this came out but this album was their best because it was different from their first couple albums. If you get a chance please review Testament, especially Practice what you Preach album

Brilliant assessment As I was 15 when this came out i couldn’t grasp the meaning at all. Of course being a 45 year old dad now it’s obvious. But think about Tom stays in his 20’s. Having such an articulated intelligent way of expressing his contempt Slayer gets a bad rep for their imagery and satanic references which slayer has said in interviews was just to fuck with people. Amazing breakdown. I've been listening to this album since it's release. Still have an original 1988 LP of South of Heaven, which this album is off of. Slayer is amazing and this is one of their first songs to bring a bad thing that humans do to light and call out it's wrongs.

This was a great reaction. Slayer definitely challenges the casual listener. Give them a listen and most will find the brilliance in their lyrical storytelling, as dark and evil as it may be. Or, you just rock your brains out and have your face melted by hot ass solos. Well done. Great job.

I've been a Slayer fan from the beginning, literally. I'm the same age and grew up in the South Bay between the guys in Slayer and Hetfield. Thrash was the music we were waiting for after the hair band fiasco of the early 80's. It's interesting to see younger people discover and appreciate music I have known for so long.

one of the most influential bands in metal, to this day they have remained to shock people in their own words and music. Tom Araya is an amazing guy too as well as a great vocalist, and Kerry King has remained one of my all time favourite guitarists too. One of the bands which got me into metal. I never looked back.
