Slaying The Dragon FKT p/b Astral Cycling

The "Dragon" is a huge Ridgeline trail system on North Mtn, 15 miles north of Roanoke, just outside fo Catawba, Va. The loop itself is a meager 36 miles but when you factor in the level of tech (roots, Rock, loose) and the amount of climbing (7,800ft) 36 miles now seems like a big ask. While a few people have ridden this loop, no one has ever set the bar for a fastest known time. With the help of Astral Wheels and their tried and tested Carbon Serpentine rims I figured I take a crack at taming this beast and hopefully inspire some others to don their suits of armor and see if they can't slay the dragon too.

Thank you for explaining a bit of lore behind the Dragon’s Back name. It’s a funny coincidence ‘cause I was gonna call it that purely because it describes the ridgeline profile when viewed from the Craig county side. Then the head, tooth, and the rest just fell harmoniously into place. And also because there’s plenty of fossilized slate scales scattered and piled about up there. Way to slay that thing! Clearly, you are a RoaKnight rolling atop a Kona stallion!

Nice ride! I've been putting in some big miles on foot on North Mtn this summer. Love the vert! Winter is the best time to hit the ridge line, all that gnarly vegetation is dead and you can actually see the trail. Nice work!

Looks amazing! This is is on fall list with a little less brush. Maybe a detour on the way to UCI? Assuming Gordon has the FKT SS? So if I double his time Ill call it success! Awesome video, you are doing great things for the VA riding scene and certainly motivate me and a lot of others to get out there!

Hey Kerry; great video, very entertaining sidebars, where's shermie? anyhow I'm planning to hit Roanoke again in late march on my way down to Brevard and Greenville. Last year Luci (my border collie)and I hit Carvin's Cove a couple times while in that area. I'm wondering if it might be worth checking out the Dragon or is it all knarl?

It’s an osprey duro 1.5l. You’re gonna have to see some Velcro to the inside of your chest pockets so you don’t loose food and tools on descents on descents…

Joes racing tire gauge. I found it on Amazon. Just make sure you get one that has the pressures you usually use near the center of the gauge range. So for mtb you’d want a 0-60psi gauge.
