Farrier day at the farm.
Aside from being a hay farmer these days, I was previously certified by Liberated Horsemanship back in 2013. Today, I'm bringing you along while I trim a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse that has previously foundered with his current owner since moving to NC from FL. He is now boarded here at our farm in SC and thankfully has had no issues.

You know what’s sad, it’s easier to cut the hoof of a 700+ pound farm animal than it is to clip the nails of my 10 pound cat. Wtf.

Its-Me Anthony you could do extensive training using food to rewrite his negative associations with trimming. Such as teaching him that if he lets you hold his foot, he gets a treat. Then move on to just holding the clippers against the nail, give a treat, then actual trimming. If you teach him that you won't force him and he gets food for letting you trim, he learns quick to allow it, making it easier for everyone! I will try to include some links if I can find them of video examples.

I know that I already commented on this video, but I just wanted to say that I just love what you said about how sensitive horse's are. And how you mentioned how wrong it is, using pain devices on your horse for compliance. That's what I heard anyway! Plus the fact that you don't shoe your horse's. You're the type of Man that needs to be training the horse world with your video's. You're a good Man!

I handle a lot of horses in a 6 week period. roughly 300. Very rarely do you need to get after a horse. In the last year I gave two a nudge to knock it off. Just not worth the fight. You gotta get back under that horse soon enough and they suck to catch if they don't like you lol

It makes it harder to get out of the way. Without being in stocks horses have the capacity to kick forward with their hinds, flick backwards with their fronts or strike forward with their fronts. It is more common than some would have you believe though and doing it bent over is only marginally less risky and will ruin your back long term.

I certainly wouldn’t do it with a horse I didn’t know and trust and I would use a stool that wouldn’t hurt the horse if they jump and step on it (IE a foot going through). But being able to sit sometimes is the only way I can trim my horses bc of a back injury as well. There are always risks.

Great video and informative for viewers. FYI, you popped up in my feed algorithm as I sub to a farrier. It must be for horses after the farrier has trimmed their feel, the same as feeling light footed and comfy after going to the chiropodist 😃 You have an amazing skill set and it is just like trimming our nails, it does hurt the horse 🐎 Horses are amazing creatures that offer us all so much. My family where horse masters in WW1 (mounted cavalry) and ran the horse drawn canal post office barges in WW2. My sister is a devout horse owner and competitor. They all had the gift of dealing with the worse behaved horses (esp my grandfather in WW2). Horses have enabled the world to function with dignity and generosity of spirit. As I say, horses are a gift to us all 🐎

I dont dig them out like some. I like to just make the surface of the sole smooth. At least it what I learned from my training

I know this was a month ago, still thought id add. most farriers (that ive learned from and worked with) including myself take off the edge of the bars to avoid thrush along with other bacterias and prevent dirt and grime getting in between the two. Helps all the dirt fall out naturally. But everyone is different.I take off enough to leave a little gap between.

Ok man first thing that horse has a serious problem.. It has a 1/2-3/4" stretched white line.... You do know that horse has jad laminatis issues??? Common people say founder but that is last stage of it.. To much to type but not being a butt, please ask a reputable Farrier for help on that one.

Horse had founderd when I first met him. Thats how i came about meeting him. The previous vet and farrier were at wits end and wanted to put him down. I have full documentation of everything. I saved this horses life. Then 2 years later owner forgot everything she knew and it happened again. Now the horse lives with me. Fully sound riding and loving life. I explained a good portion of his situation in the video. I appreciate the advice but know what i am doing. Been to school and do continued ed. Every horse copes with things different. This guy has and probably will always have his stretched whiteline but doesn’t bother us to the least. He’s been in my care 7 years now so if something were to happen it already would have. Thanks for watching

Yes, first thing I noticed is there's no rocker on the front feet, which is essential to keep leverage off the toe in barefoot horses with these problems. It has been helping my new-to-captivity mustang tremendously with reattaching his hoof wall and slowly eliminating the laminar wedge. With no rocker, the leverage on the toe will prevent the stretched white line from ever receeding. There's always something new to learn.
