Yeah about the frog being “more sensitive”, the dude in this video was completely right, it isn’t more sensitive, but I think a lot of barns and trainers stress to tell their students to not pick the frog or mistake it for mud or rocks.
@FluffyDragonDrawing
@FluffyDragonDrawing 2 года назад
That makes a lot of sense actually, i do have a question though? I heard that the frog is meant to help the horse 'feel' the ground; how would it do that without there being some sensitivity?
@avillee
@avillee 2 года назад
@@FluffyDragonDrawing I’m not a hoof expert, but talking to my farrier, I believe that it’s like an absorber for shock and overall padding for the nerves underneath it + the keratin in the hoof itself!
@gentlechaos5911
@gentlechaos5911 2 года назад
I was told to just be more careful there because it's softer, so when you use a pick you could put holes/ridges in there where rocks can get stuck. So I usually just used the bristly side of the pick to clean there.
@Shaixira
@Shaixira 2 года назад
I realise my comment is a bit late, but I imagine people think of the frog as something similar to the big pad on dogs and cats, which *is* sensitive. Till I started binging on horse hoof trimming I also thought that bit of the hoof was sensitive and was careful around it when I cleaned horse hooves

I also use a rotary hoof knife used mostly for cattle but it makes it easier for to trim the hoofs because I have about a 20 second window to trim some before my horse puts his foot down because he can't stand on 3 legs or he will fall on top me so I have to be fast in my trimming. Hi. Writing message from Japan. I watch tons of horse related RU-vid channels to self educate myself. I do not come from a horsy background but I started riding horses about an decade ago and now adore this creature. Figured out that the best way to treat them right is to know about them. Reading and watching horse anatomy and behaviours helps me understand more deeply. Your channel is awesome. Even though English is not my mother tongue, I do find your channel interesting and easy to comprehend. Technical terms are the hardest but eager to know more. Looking forward to see you more in this channel. Stay safe and stay healty.

Even at your local animal shelter they sometimes have some odd animals other than dogs and cats and bunnies. A new trend is roosters and chickens. For whatever reason people are going out buying them and realize you have to feed and water and house them instead of doing the work they turned them over to the shelter. It's good to see someone who knows what they're doing working with the horses. I enjoyed watching your videos I look forward to seeing more.

I go into the stable to get the bridle and he walks up to the horse and keeps trying different ways to make it walk. As I'm walking out, he gets behind the horse and slaps it on the rear. Or do they naturally have solutions for it that don't work anymore because they live in captivity?? 🤔 Thanks for any answers 💙
@TheScorpion0081
@TheScorpion0081 3 года назад
Friction. Horses naturally run a lot in the wild. To the point where friction from the dirt and rocks that are kicked up naturally keeps their hooves from growing beyond the point of comfort. Same with wild bulls, zebra, and other hooved animals.

Wild horses have to travel 15-20 miles a day to find adequate food and water. Their hooves will be worn and chipped by the terrain. Look up what the hoof of a wild mustang looks like. The bottom, including the frog is hard and there is concavity. The toe area will have a worn area that gives the horse “rollover”. Horses are crazy adapted to live in the wild. That is not to say that the weak don’t get culled.

Also because usually people keep their horses in fields with soft grass, let them graze. Any horse owner worth their salt will give their horse enough room, but they don't keep them on rough unforgiving terrain. Wild horses walk over a lot of rocks and stuff. Also they break their legs and die of diseases all the time, but domesticated horses have owners who take care of them.
