Yes, I agree that there are 'types' of sleepers. Which is why I was wondering why in this video one kind of sleep is being recommended for everyone.

Deprived sleep also leads to increased dementia. Never realized how critical sleep is until I read, the spinal fluid and fluid around the brain literally cleans the brain

Why do people feel no obligation to follow the title of their videos. The title is "how to optimize your sleep". I'm half way in and all they have talked about is the importance of sleep. Okay, now I've watched the entire fkn video and there is not a single word about how to optimize your sleep - as is claimed in the title.

The only "optimization" trick he reveals is on the number of hours of sleep you should have. 17:30 if you sleep 6h/night during 1 week, your blood sugar is so disrupted that you're considered pre-diabetic. 18:00 yearly study called "daylight savings time" performed on 1.6 bio people : in the spring when we loose 1h of sleep we see a 24% increase in heart attacks, and 21% reduction in autumn. 17:00 1 4h night= 70% drop in critical anti-cancer cells 19:50 deep sleep : slows down the nervous system (heart rate lowers, cortisol drops down), turns into immune stimulation mode, restock the armament of your immune system. 40:40 infected people are more sleepy. The immune system signals to the brain that you need sleep to fight the disease. 26:20 in all psychiatric conditions, sleep is disturbed. 27:00 deep emotional brain centers erupt when you're sleep deprived, becomes up to 60% more reactive. 29:00 lack of sleep is predictive of suicidal thoughts and attempts.

Me either. I sleep 6 hours(!) I go to sleep at around 11:00PM and wake up every day at 7:30AM no matter what. But, not ALL days are like that, I have troubled “falling” to sleep…… and at least twice per week I have to depend on a pill, simply putting my BRAIN does NOT turned off, the minute I put my head to the pillow…. That’s it, my brain can NOT stop thinking about things that happened in the past.

Thanks for sharing 😊. Was wondering, I studied that some people are short sleepers, genotypically speaking... thus should the general rule still apply to these people? Also, I found that diet affects sleep as well... people on a raw vegan for example tend to need much less sleep. They do this without even having to set alarms and stuff. A spiritual leader like Sadhguru for example sleeps only about 3.5 to 4.5 hrs a day and talks about how sleep efficiency is what it's about. What's your opinion on this? Thanks

I've tried so many things to cure my chronic insomnia, with no success. Hypnotherapy, online sleep clinic to mention the latest. I get around 2 hours at night, and eventually had to quit my job in May as a consequence. I've read this book 3 years ago, in a way I found it patronising, as mine it's certainly not a lifestyle choice. The last thing I need is to be made feel guilty. Good diet, exercise and bla bla bla don't always work.

@nopewontyou

Develop a routine. There's some routines you can find googling, but develop your own routine to fall asleep. As you lay in bed, try to quite your mind. Rock your foot, try to notice when something your doing or thinking about helps you fall asleep. At first figuring out what helps you falla asleep will keep you awake a little longer, but it's ultimately worth it because you will eventually have a developed way to help yourself fall asleep. Good luck!

My husband has a serious case of ED and I’m suffering lack of sleep for many hours through the night trying to help him reach climax. I’m exhausted most of the time and hardly any climax myself due to his reduced erection and him not trusting supplements. So much spent energy and relentless sleeplessness with little or no erection unless we go for a highly invasive mechanical penal implant. On my end there’s not much comfort and plenty restless nights. Unless we can find a solution, there’s not much rest for the weary.

Wait a minute, isn't sleeping longer in order to live longer a very counterproductive way to actually LIVE longer? Ok hear me out... Let's say that our friend X is a 21yr old and already sleeps 8 hours a day. It's December and the new year is about to begin and watches this video and decides to sleep 1 more hour a day in order to extend his life/live longer. Now let's enjoy a bit of math here: 7h×4w= 28h a month 28h×12m= 336h a year 336h÷24h= 14 days\ 2 weeks a year As we can see if X sleeps an extra hour a day in an 8 hour sleep schedule X loses 2 weeks of actual active living per year. And since we are talking about a lifetime change here, that means that in 26yrs X (a now 47yr old) lost 1 year of active living because he slept 1 more hour a day consistently for 26yrs 😂😂.

Fact-check Matthew Walker, people. At best he's a bad scientist. He's factually wrong multiple times throughout this interview, and countless times in his book, including "the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life", or "every animal sleeps", just to begin with. His own citations in his book contradict him, meaning that he either does not read works he cites, he doesn't understand it, or he's lying. Either of the 3 is a big red flag after his claimed 20 years in the field. Again: you don't have to believe me, you can easily check these yourself.
@Marqan

Here's something specific: In his book, Chapter 6 (page 119/344 in my e-book) Matthew shows a graph that he falsified to support his opinion.
