Metal scholars, this is the last analysis of "Two", we close with Jericho and one cannot help but imagine the walls of the famous ancient city of biblical Jericho, maybe as a metaphor for a wall built between two people who have a distant relationship now? Or is it the wall between Sleep and the new Vessel against the past, the people who were left behind? I try to delve into possibilities here, I hope you like it! Amazing I adore this saga you’re taking us all on! Great work! My personal theory of ST is this: I believe the deity of “Sleep” is actually part of the collective unconscious of Carl Jung psychology (which is accessed through dreams and sleep in theory). Vessel’s need to be an artist and create and connect to the collective unconscious despite how destructive it may be to his personal life defines the saga of the Sleep/Vessel relationship. Sometimes it’s toxic, sometimes it’s loving, sometimes it’s violent. For example-Think about your friend who gave up his comfort, or a simple marriage in a small town to go be a rock star. That takes gut wrenching sacrifice and offering. You give up parts of yourself in service of your art. That which lurks in your psyche, and never gives you peace. That which you know you must meld with to be whole but which is a constant form of torment. Aka the tortured artist. This is pretty much a beautiful biography of Vessel’s reconciliation and decent into becoming an artist while grappling and getting in touch with his dark imaginings and inspirations. Art, to an artist is a torment, as you try to separate yourself from it, but it can consume you whole and you must worship it. Every song Vessel writes is an “offering” because he is bowing down to the humble nature of being but a tool to have his art flow through him from the collective unconscious of humankind.

This is an awesome theory! I’ve had a working theory that the idea of Sleep is a metaphor for success and the process of creation, with convos between the artist, this creation (vessel) and their separate ambitions. Everything the artist has sacrificed in the face of an unknowable power. The toxic relationships we have with ourselves and how that feeds our relationships with others.

This separation, detachment, this is necessary but at the same time it will eat you alive, as least it will consume what you've left behind, it's that sacrifice that has to be done for that bigger purpose so there's always this contradiction and tension... thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I’ve most often assumed Sleep represents the shadow self (our darker impulses n trauma n sometimes bad conditioning) that we all need to contend with. It’s coming for all of us n we need to work with it to become fully integrated humans, lest it consume us. This also ties into initial Saturn return stuff (generally ages 27-30), ya know.. the “27 club” take on how so many young people, especially creatives, don’t make it past that mark. The darkness swallows them up. Saturn’s element is lead. The goal of alchemy is the transmutation of lead into gold, which is reflected often in ST’s lyrical themes. Saturn is very much about boundaries and restriction, it is heavy like lead. It’s the ruling planet of Capricorn, which is a very disciplined n goal-oriented zodiac sign. There can be no enjoyment without work, without suffering first.

There's a theory about Jericho being sung from the perspective of Sleep and (this current) Vessel being just another vessel for Sleep in a long line of vessels going back thousands of years (since Sleep is an ancient deity). This can be understood from the lines "I dine on old encounters", where Sleep reminisces his past vessels before he finds a new one; he cannot fully "emerge" without a vessel - it's always a symbiotic relationship - hence the line "until I wake". In "you taste like new flesh" he meets the current Vessel and expects worship - "say my name again". And I believe the perspective switches with "my hands are not worthy" - these are Vessel's words. What do you think?

This makes sense, specifically, after the sacrifice in Nazareth. Sleep is actually awakening n warming to Vessel.

Do this video again I'm so intrigued. Points to add... something about salt being a symbol covenant spiritually. Perhaps this is Sleep returning to well... sleep because the old vessel has expired. Until I wake I will dine on old encounters. Will be in slumber mode until the next Vessel appears. The high point "there's something in the way you lay that makes the dead switch graves, YOU TAKE YOUR LEAVE. That very high point is the exit of the soul or the final expiration of the Vessel. How can you taste like new flesh? Wouldn't Sleep just ask or say I will have a taste of new flesh... no... this is because Vessel itself reincarnates into another form, younger healthier? We dont know... but new flesh indicates... you guessed it... new body. But until that time... Sleep will enjoy the memories of the past. "Say my name again" How else do you summon a deity? and lastly "my hands are unworthy"
