Dear God, that time, that voice, that face, that tune...spiraling into my mid-thirties, I look back on this and remember what a delight it was to be 19 and part of the London Scene between 94 and 97. There will never be anything to compare.
Oh my god.. these were the days.. oasis, sleeper, shed seven, supergrass, ash, bluetones, green day, fun loving criminals, manics, beck, pulp, divine comedy, garbage, radiohead.. the list is endless!! I wish we didnt have so much nu rave crap nowadays!
Im from Mexico and I discover Sleeper thanks to the soundtrack of the movie Trainspotting. A few time later I went to a Record Store in México City and saw The It Girl Álbum. I decided to buy it, it was a blind purchase really because I didn't Know any songs from that álbum, but it was one of my best purchases ever. I loved every song from that Record and became one of my favorites. Lots of great memories from those days while listening to this song. Cheers!
Me too, westong1974! I was there in England for both the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses. I thought then I could die at peace that I had lived to see this and hear this music. Long live British Rock.
Awesome track, BritPop was fantastic, with Sleeper one of the under rated exponents. Brings back great memories of Brixton Academy in 96 (I think). Off to listen to the whole album now!
A heartfelt story of a disintegrating relationship described beautifully by Louise. Love the lines “Was it when I said I wanted to have children? tore up all your photos, didn't feel too clever, spent the whole of Sunday, sticking you together". Elvis Costello did a decent slow version of the song but it’s crying out for a warm melancholic female voice to do true justice to this great song - maybe Lana Del Rey, Cat Power, Lykke Li - suggestions please...
I remember seeing them in the barrowlands in 95 (13 years ago!!wtf?) and seeing louise post concert and saying to her - 'you're the best' Good chat up line. Really hooks the female. We never did copulate
God I miss this band...saw them at Villa Leisure Centre and Wolves civic and they were just awesome. Come on Ms Wener....reform the band NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you like this then you might like another of Sleeper's songs called You Got Me. It's on their third album and greatest hits. It's another catchy pop song with meaning.
Can remember nicking my sister's cassette single of this to learn the words, and thinking it was the best song ever for a few weeks, never seen the vid before so thanks!
@Eggmandu so true. I spent my allowance on UK magazines, import singles, everything. I'm glad this was the soundtrack of my teen years in middle of nowhere America.
Louise is not just frikkin beautiful but she has a voice that drives me crazy - one of the real hotties from the UK music scene and talented to boot :]
I totally agree. I don't understand the "good old days" attitude. All the music that was available in the 90's is stil available now (plus plenty of awesome new music) and we all now have the ability to listen to it for free! If we still had to pay for CDs or wait on MTV's discretion I think I would have missed out on this awesome band.
Love this song... There's just something about the whole 90's Britpop scene that defies explanation... I'm forever telling people who don't get what the fuss is all about 'look, sorry, but you had to be there' :)
Not to get into an agruement I haven't a clue about....but Sleeper was the real deal imo. An outstanding 90s band that blended the best of 60s and 80s pop rock (or jangle rock) . Brilliant imo.
i can remember sleeper supporting the manics in cardiff in 1994 they did not get bottled off the stage raccaman i was there too and spoke to them after as james bradfield out of the manics is related to me. I had a back stage pass
HA! Goad damn it, I knew there was another! I didn't think I had listed all the Indie Queens... thanks for the reminder! Can you think of any more?! Cheers for that! :)
I so wanted to be in louise wener when I was 16. Saw them support the Manics, thought they were great live but that Steven Street's production on the first album was cack.
we had cable as long as i could remember. not every tv of course. we had an antennae that picked up all the local stations. and some of it was still in black and white. ..man things have changed in 20 years. but i do remember 95 to 99 much better than prior to that. and we you could watch mtv and vh1 all night. as for seeing what todays music will be viewed as in the future, i think we will all laugh at limp bizkit, eminem and kid rock. as our rock stations started playing them they went under
I was at Derby uni, they came there early 95 just before they were famous. Unfortunately I missed them, but apparently she was cussing out the stage because it was bouncing. Ed interviewed her for the UNI mag, apparently his leg couldn't stop shaking because she was so attractive.
