Sleeping Beauty...But Make It Historically Accurate

We all know Disney is well known for its magic and not for historical accuracy. After all, animated children's movies rely more on being entertaining than lining up with what would be inside a textbook. But , I, an avid Disney lover and historical fashion connoisseur, have decided to rewatch the 1959 Sleeping Beauty and pick out what they did correctly and what they did incorrectly. This animated masterpeice takes place in the 14th century, medieval Europe. I go through and redraw the characters costumes and look into things such as the inside of Sleeping Beauty's castle.
This video is not sponsored btw, I just love Disney and recommend others to enjoy this classic.

You are historian and you confused 15th century with 16th century? 🙄😒🧐😣 1400s is 15th century and it is still late Middle Ages in European culture and history, at least until 1492, the discovery of the New World by Columbus. 🧐😒🙄 That event marks the beginning of European renaissance that would continue during the 16th century (1500s). Then, we have the Italian renaissance that would start before European renaissance in other European countries, at least in art and fashion. Then, the 17th Century (1600s) would be generally associated with baroque called Restoration in England), which people commonly confuse with Rococo or Enlightment (that is 18th century: 1700s). Until then, each era is about hundred years or so, obviously there are specific dates for events that mark beginning and end of each era, but the general timeframe is the entire century. Then, from the 19th century (1800s), the eras are shorter and fashions change quickly; each decade brings new esthetics. This all tends to repeat in the 20th century with earlier fashion influences in modern times. And finally, the 21st century, or the culture of trash and "practical" ugliness... 🙄😒🧐 I very much prefer the Medieval fashions... 🙄😒🧐😁

If the movie is from the 50s and Aurora has the typical 50s style, it figures that the fairies, who are like aunties or grannies, look Victorian Edwardian. In the 50s, that would "just" have been ~50 years ago. So yeah. 1950s grannies in their 70s / 80s were young in the Edwardian era and its plausible that they took their fashion into their old age.

Disney wasn't really interested in historical accuracy so is it no wonder they mixed and matched clothing styles from over a 300 or 400 year period and the signature flowy hair of princess Aurora is a signature Disney move. Let's not forget that they often sanitized the original source material, which is often really horrific.

many of the Disney movies were based on traditional German (or European in general) fairytales and we were told them as children and they do reach from nice to really disturbing... If you’re searching for the fairytales look up Grimms Märchen (Grimm‘s fairytales)
@sarahbethh
@sarahbethh 3 года назад
@@paulalck2607 The Grimms fairytales weren't the "originals" actually! They took folk stories from all over Europe (although many had roots and/or adaptations in other areas as well) and added their own twists onto them. The story of Cinderella, for example, was first found in a Mesopotamian legend where a large bird (eagle or falcon or something I can't remember) swooped into the prince's (or rough equivalent of prince, again I don't really remember the details) room and left a girl's shoe, so the prince went and found the girl and married her, NOT originating in, as many people believe, in the Grimms fairytale book. They did spread many of their stories around to much wider audiences than they would have been told to before, but most if not all of their stories were based on pre-existing ones with varying levels of gruesomeness.

Well. My dad and brother have pale blond hair, caramel eyebrows and eyelashes. My mom and sister have darker blond hair (more honey colored) and eyebrows and eyelashes in the same tone. They all have rather light grey-blue eyes (the ratio of blue and grey varies for each of them, with my little bro having the most blue ones but still obviously greyish). And then there's me. I was born with black hair, dark skin and really dark brown eyes. Everything lightened over the years, my eyes are now maroon colored, my hair is brown on first glance, but according to the light can appear bronze or a very dark gold. And according to any beautician and hair stylist, I am 'actually' blond haired (even got me tested once, according to genetical whatever, i am blonde lol). However, my eyebrows are a VERY dark brown and even seem black, unless right next to something actually black. And my eyelashes are black (unfortunately, they are short and straight). Fun fact: I was born with my back covered in hair and a monobrow, both disappeared after a few weeks. My body hair is ridiculous: it's pretty non existent, even for a blond i don't have much arm or leg hair, it grows veeery slowly and it's so incredibly thin. Except for those parts where everyone grows hair (armpits and 'down there') where it grows quick, and thick and long andn dark, like a brunette. So, yeah, so much about that.

Just a little note on the Fleur de Lys: by the 14th century, about 300 years had passed since the Norman invasion of England, and almost all of the country's nobility was French. Furthermore, the movie takes place at the same time as the 100 year's war, and Edward II used the Fleur de Lys in England's coat of arms to show that he had claim in French land. One thing to mention about the confusion over whether it's France or England. Late 14th century was the height of the Hundred Years War so England was in control of most of France and in fact, Aquitaine had been under English rule for so long it's people considered themselves English rather than French.
@MissCaraMint
@MissCaraMint 3 года назад
Considering just how out of place that dress they gave Aurora really is, I think it's pretty clear that they have the same kind of out of time knowledge that the Genie for Aladdin has. Edit: I think that also has something to do with her other clothing as well. Considering they are completely isolated from the rest of society out there in the woods, and the fairies seem to be pretty confused about contemporary fashion. And bevareges, and cake. Oooh maybe that's why Prince Philip is so captivated. He has literally never seen anything like her. Love the dress you put her in though.

The pink clothes from medieval art look like they were dyed with puce imo, since they edge towards more purpley/mushroomy colours. Also depending on the beets you can get really pink hued dyes that range from rose coloured all the way to like deep magenta depending on how long you leave it. Also I believe in Medieval Scottland there were pinks and magentas achieved with different lichens and native dandelion roots which got pretty impressively vivid.

Briar Rose does have a personality and I don't know why you think she doesn't. She's kind, good-hearted, curious, intelligent and idealistic but we don't see her for very long so no wonder people miss it. The subtleties in the animation show her personality a lot. Prince Philip is one of my favourite Disney Prince's and I think he was the template for Eugene in Tangled because they share similarities even down to the horse. Maleficent is wearing a houppelande with dagged sleeves and a horned henin c. 1430s. Obvious inspiration, despite the fantasy elements turning it into actual horns. Also, unmarried young girls didn't necessarily wear covered hair. Married women did with the exception of coronation portraiture. It often denoted the difference between a young maiden and an adult woman. The other exception was Italy where there was lots of uncovered hair. Northern Europe was very different in fashion from Southern Europe. The vast majority of the fashion in Sleeping Beauty is 15th century (all those henins) in spite of Phillip's line (he's dressed very Robin Hood), though there are the odd exceptions like Stefan and Leah being earlier (they're the most 14th century of them all) and Hubert being full-blown Henry VIII Tudor. Sleeping Beauty is definitely France, not England. Though even if it was, Edward III's England absolutely would've had fleurs-de-lys. Look at the Plantagenet heraldry with quartered fleurs-de-lys and Richard the Lionheart's lions. They fought a whole war against France with the intent to claim the French throne after John Lackland lost his inherited lands in Normandy (with the exceptions of Calais and Poitou). At the time, the land in Aquitaine/Gascony, which was wine country, brought it far more profit than rainy, cold England, which couldn't grow much and was considered a cultural backwater. The roots of the Hundred Years' War were this. The English crown was crosses and fleurs-de-lys. Note that the English court and ruler didn't even speak English primarily until Henry V. Anglo-Norman was the language of the nobility from William the Conqueror on through c. 1400. Richard I the Lionheart preferred his mother's native tongue of Occitan and didn't really speak English (or even like England at all--he left mother Eleanor of Aquitaine in charge while he went off crusading for a decade). Then there was Henry VII Tudor, who grew up speaking Welsh (thanks to being raised by Uncle Jasper), French and Latin, but he was a later exception before getting into the German Welfen/Guelphs (especially middle-aged George I, which is why he created the role of Prime Minister to rule the foreign country for him). In terms of Plantagenet England, the anglophone anglophiles were that stretch from Henry V to Richard III. Note that Mad Henry VI was actually crowned King of France at Notre-Dame de Paris when he was an infant, though was very much a pretender to the throne. Enter Charles VII and Joan of Arc.

Wow! Great to know. There has been a lot of speculation in the comments whether it’s England or France. I guess Disney says it’s France but I’ve also heard England. As for Maleficent, I probably didn’t recognize it as a houppelaunde because it seemed more like a robe with that long center opening and that threw me off. Plus since I was using Philip’s statement for a time period to stick to, I wasn’t researching 15th century dress. But it would have been good if I had addressed her being accurate in that period of time!

One point about the sword. There was something called the "hand-and-a-half sword" which was about halfway between the one-handed and two-handed versions. The idea was to be able to use it either way. Maybe the prince was carrying that.

I love when people do a green gown for Aurora! I'm firmly in camp Merriweather (my family constantly says "make it blue" whenever we're picking something's color), but Fauna deserves more attention (and green is a very close second to blue).

Holy crap! I just realized something. When I was about 5 or 6, back in 1980 something, my mom made me a Sleeping Beauty costume. But she made it in Maleficent’s colors. My mother made me a hot pink and purple Sleeping Beauty costume because those were my favorite colors. I didn’t even realize that I made my costume basically if Maleficent was Sleeping Beauty. 😲

@@iamvictoriarae I think you mentioned that he was pretending to be a commoner, at one point? But, I forget which era you were going for. Things seemed 13th century, then suddenly we're all up in the 15th, and I'm wondering where the 200 years went? I forget if you mentioned it.
@iamvictoriarae
@iamvictoriarae 3 года назад
@@karenl6908 yes I did mention that I theorized he was pretending to be a commoner to remain under the radar while out in the woods. I believe I mentioned in the video that Philip stated they were in the 14th century. As to why it seemed like I was going into the 15th century, I assumed that it was in the later half of the 14th century because of the Crackow shoes . Some of late 14th century fashions bled into the next century. I tried conveying this in the vid but let me know if you have any other questions. The era is so vague in Disney movies.

It's definitely france cause as you mentioned, the Fleur-de-Lys is present in many scenes, the France national anthem is sung as “Hail to the Princess Aurora”, the art direction for the movie that was inspired by the French gothic manuscript by the Limbourg Brothers and other French tapestries, lastly the movie is based on the Charles Perrault version of Sleeping Beauty.

Rando on yt: makeup existed before Cleopatra's day. Me (armchair historian who watches way too many documentaries): you know the ancient Greeks right? Well they existed before Cleopatra's was born. And then there was an ancient Greece before ancient Greece called Mycenaean Greece, and then another culture even before them called Minoan Greece and now archeologists have found a settlement suggesting that even in prehistory women would tattoo (or makeup idk for sure) their faces. (Cycladic Greek Culture)

Good call with the french inspiration! „Sleeping Beauty“ (Or at least the most famous, Perrault version) is a french fairytale. Nicole Rudolph made a series recreating Maleficent‘s outfit, and she went with a 15th century look. Also, yeah, the fairies have little witch hats to signify they‘re magic, cause french fairies walked a very fine line between the little people of Great Britain‘s folklore and straight up human sorceresses

People assume Aurora doesn't have a personality when honestly... She's just an introvert! She clearly has a rich inner world and wistful imagination, AS EVIDENCED BY HER SONG AND DANCE, but she is not an extrovert and isn't comfortable expressing her every thought aloud. She still cares about the people she knows well and has deep emotional ties to the playmates she grew up with (forest animals). I was really similar to her as a kid (though i played with Barbies instead of animals), so she was the princess i liked most. Even after i became more like Belle, Aurora tigs at my heart strings and inner child

I love your video! "Sleeping Beauty" (along with "Beauty and the Beast") was my favourite Disney movie growing up. And I agree, it is a lot shorter than one remembers. But that is the case with most of the old movies. They just couldn't afford to make them longer as it was so expensive. Personally I always thought the movie looked very medieval-ish in general (and heck, I don't care how inaccurate it is, I just LOVE to look at it!), but I adored your designs for the 14th century. Fun fact: I was surprised at first, because in the German version Philipp says it takes place in the 13TH century, not the 14th. No idea why they changed that, the syllables needed are the exact same...

i really love how you went about this. it's very cool to see someone make one dress or costume based on a particular character, but, the way you did this, we get to see how all the characters might look, and learn about more kinds of medieval (in this case) fashion, and i found that soooooo interesting and satisfying! that may be because i'm more interested in history than sewing, but, either way, i enjoyed this a lot. (i hope this makes sense.)

Love this! Maybe an odd question: in one of the tales Disney used as a source (Perrault’s Version I think) Sleeping Beauty sleeps for a hundred years and the prince recognizes her by how old the clothes she’s wearing are (I think the wording is like “he saw she was wearing something his grandmother would’ve worn”); is there a distinct hundred year period in the Middle Ages where fashion changed really wildly, or would he be thinking more of smaller design or piece choices?
