About your read on the spindle scene, that's actually not a reach considering Disney seems to have that interpretation as well. There is a book series called Disney Twisted Tales which are Disney stories with a dark "what if" twist to them. In the Sleeping Beauty one Phillip kissing Aurora doesn't wake her up and instead puts Phillip to sleep as well and now they are both stuck in her dreams. Aurora confesses to Phillip at some point that when Maleficent hypnotized her to walk up the stairs and touch the spindle she let it happen. She could have tried to resist but she didn't. Because she was so distraught about her situation. She has been in the middle of nowhere her whole life with only her aunts and her animal friends and has never been able to connect with the world the way she wants. She dreams constantly about meeting a prince who falls in love with her but never gets to the point where they share a kiss, kinda symbolizing how out of reach this dream really is. And she finally meets someone who feels like the man from her dreams. Almost like he stepped out of her dream and became reality. It's everything she's wanted. And then not only does she hear that she can never see him again, she also gets to find out that her entire life has been a lie. That her aunts, who she loves dearly, are not really her aunts, that her parents, who she's been told are dead, are not only still alive but are the King and Queen of the Kingdom and want her to come back and take her place as Princess. Throwing her into a life of responsibility and pressure that she NEVER asked for. It felt like her whole world came crashing down and it was too much for her. So when Maleficent showed up with a way out she let it happen. She resisted only a moment at the last second when she heard her aunts call out to her but by that point it was already too late. That was a very sad part to read but it sadly makes a lot of sense.

Wow, that was the best comment I've read on any of my videos so far. I had no clue all that back story existed. Thank you so much for writing all that and sharing, and thank you for watching the video. Let me know if there are any other Disney films you want to see covered 👍🏻 I'll probably do Peter Pan next, then maybe Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella.

The music in this film is actually from Tchaikovsky's ballet. Disney just added lyrics.

Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney classic and one my fav movies in general. It is so underrated out of the Princess line up. The art style and music is such a time capsule. I love how the art is inspired by illuminated manuscripts and medieval tapestries but has an almost brutalist contemporary geometry… just beautiful!

Interesting analysis and I'm always glad for a deeper look at Sleeping Beauty. People usually don't see the nuances in fairytales and think them superficial, and Sleeping Beauty/Aurora usually get a lot of flack. Aurora I really like her as a character, she's not the most complicated but I feel she does have character. Its just done subtly and mostly by the animation and not the spoken dialogue. Which as a sheltered, introverted, often daydreaming child I could understand. The animators and Mary Costa worked hard with the little time she had on screen. Plus one of my absolute favourite fun facts is how the dress 'Pink! Blue' argument between Merryweather and Flora was created because of the animators arguing over Aurora's dress colour while making the film.

A critique I often hear is that aurora has very little screentime. While that is true,I always felt as though it makes her scenes in the movie more impactful and it truly makes her the star of the show.

This movie and Aurora do get a lot of unfair criticism but to be fair, the whole point of the story is to put Aurora to sleep. I think one good thing about this movie is Prince Phillip is the first prince to have more than a few lines and some personality.

I totally agree. Pinocchio is similar in that Geppetto doesn't have much screen time, but every second he's on screen, they make the most use of him. I find alot of these older Disney films don't waste a single line of dialogue, probably because it was so expensive/time consuming to animate each frame they really had to make sure every second wasn't wasted. I do believe that's why the older Disney films are of such high quality and it's beautiful. Thank you for watching and commenting. :)

Great video! Lots of interpretations that I've never considered before! Especially Aurora being possibly suicidal. Personally I don't think that idea fits this movie, although it is really fascinating! I always thought that Aurora was lured to her "death" through a trance associated with the curse. The siren like song beckoning her and the glowing ball of light, (that resembles a fairy?!?) leading her off to the unknown. The way she is animated makes her look practically dead and her face is almost completely blank. She seems to have some power against this trance considering she is apprehensive when approaching the spindle. After all Maleficent has to command her to touch it. Its left ambiguous if she could resist but I tend to believe she couldn't because of the curse. Plus she wasn't even warned about her curse. But thats just my interpretation! I think that concept would a great addition to a re-adaptation and would certainly fit the theme of the story. You could even play with the idea of being actively or passively suicidal. Passive suicidal ideation is fairly common for those dealing with depression and many people who experience passive ideation describe it as wanting to fall asleep and hoping to never wake up. I've seen a couple people post explanations about why Maleficent would place such a horrid curse on Aurora. I'll try to summarize here. A royal christening was a major event in the 14th century. Everyone from rich to poor was invited, and yet Maleficent wasn't. Queen Leah asks Maleficent saying "and you're not offended your excellency?" just as she is about to leave. Clearly if the queen is addressing her with such respect, Maleficent is very important and powerful. I've always thought there should have been an attempt at an apology before Maleficent curses Aurora. I think it would be far more compelling if Queen Leah said "We apologize your excellency, we hope you are not offended." And Maleficent being so vile curses Aurora anyways. Also has anyone watched this on Disney+ recently and noticed some recoloring in the opening scene? I feel like the colors are off a little and are much more saturated than the rest if the movie!

Merriweather is my favorite fairy. I love her feistiness. She might be dismissed at times by Flora, but if not for her the princess would have died.

Sleeping Beauty was one of my favorite films when I was a young boy, but sadly it has gotten a lot of flack over the years that I don't think it deserves. What I think the problem is that it is a high-context story and narrative in the medium of an animated film so the low-context watchers didn't see what it was saying. Sadly this is also why I have seen many put Aurora at the bottom of Disney Princess lists without giving her a chance to shine, or modern Disney writers not knowing what to do with her and so make her a narcoleptic. This is also why other favorite films of mine don't get the appreciation they deserve such as Gall Force: The Eternal Story or even Dune.

@@deepthought8899 The titular character's only job is to be cursed, prick herself, fall asleep, and wake up, which is why _Sleeping Beauty_ adaptations focus on things and characters around her. It's a snoozefest to be watching from the princess's point of view.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the tone of her voice makes her sound more boring than she is. I mean someone who can traverse through a forest barefoot while avoiding things like bears and wolves isn't boring. Granted, I really connected with her being alone and having to make her own friends so maybe I'm just making something out of nothing... lol
