why would they bring her back on the day that the prophecy was supposed to come true why not just keep her at the cottage until after her birthday?

Would Maleficent have cursed Aurora if Meriweather had not insulted her in public? Could the Queen's calm and more respectful demeanor have influenced the evil fairy to have any kind of mercy or to pacify her in any way? *Basically, would Sleeping Beauty be the story we know if Meriweather had just kept her attitude in check and her mouth shut?*

I don't think Aurora is as passive as often portrayed. She is very duty-bound, not just proven by her sacrifice in "Maleficent Returns" but in the original. She could have fled from her "new" parents to be with the boy she loved but felt the duty of being there for her king, queen and kingdom, which shows loyalty. She tries to keep up a straight face for the crowd but collapses when she's in her castle bedroom. She is so determined to show her strength. Though loyal, Aurora can be mischievous as she stays out too long and connects with a stranger and clearly knows what her "aunties" are up too.

Walt's Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite movies, the art is simply maleficent! I mean magnificent! ❤ X3

That’s the weirdest original story you’ve read?! You didn’t read the Basile version then. In that one, she’s raped by a king in her sleep, and gets pregnant. She gives birth, and then the child sucks out the venom and that’s how she wakes up. And I agree with you that Cinderella is the best Golden Age princess. She may not be the most proactive, but given her circumstances of having endured abuse, it is understandable. And both she Snow White show gumption on occasion, which is more than can be said about Aurora. I do find it funny, though, that while the characters of the Prince in both Snow White and Cinderella were pretty much “nothing” characters, Philip is the first named Prince.

Sleeping Beauty was the first Disney Princess movie I saw when I was a kid. She was my fave out of them and I used to watch the VHS tape so many times.

As a child (even now!) I've always looked up to Ariel. Being a redhead myself, who grew up by the Puget Sound, it was an instant connection. She's my favorite because of her stubborn nature gives her a love of exploring and learning new things!

I know she isn't the most progressive but Aurora has always been my favorite princess. (I don't count Mulan even though I love her too) I feel like she doesn't have a lot of opportunity to act, so I'm not mad she doesn't do much. She's not bratty even when upset which is refreshing and I feel its a story about what's done to her rather than about her. Very much a traditional fairytale narration of magical and adventurous events. I watched this movie so much when I was little. Its beautiful and dark and, I wish marketing used her blue dress more. Its blue during all the major scenes and contrasts nicely with her hair so I didn't really get why they went with pink. I used to think it was so separate her dress from Cinderella and Snow White's, but they went with pink for areal as well so - idk.. now I'm just rambling ..

I think Aurora is a very strong character in her own way. She has so much kindness and love. Her childlike innocence allows her to go with the flow, like wildlife. I looked up to her grace very much as a little girl. I love strong female characters, but not every girl is strong. I am most certainly not. I feel really silly saying this, but my personality is "under represented". As a little girl, I felt I could relate to Aurora's mild, sweet nature. I think we need both Aurora's and Elsa's in this world. The shakers and the cake bakers lol.

She's easily one of my favorite Disney princesses. I don't care why she gets a lot of hate. I mean sure, I wish she had a little more speaking dialogue, and she could have had another screentime scene, but she always has been a beloved heroine, and she still remains to be one today.

My favorite "traditional" Disney princess is Cinderella too!!!

You forgot part of her full story. In the movie, Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, King Stefan, Queen Leah, King Hubert, and Prince Phillip are gone for a royal conference, leaving Aurora to be in charge of the Kingdom. Merryweather realizes that being in charge will be hard, so she gives Aurora her wand so that she can make things easier. But Aurora was not good at handling magic very well. So from that day on, Aurora learns not to take the easy way out when the going gets tough.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE! She has been my favorite since I knew what Disney Princess was.

Aurora is my favorite Disney Princess, she’s very kind and elegant and she live close to nature.

As much as I love this video, I have to disagree with you on Disney not making Aurora a meaningful character. The girl grew up in the woods raised by three women who she believed were her aunts, and you can see through the film that she loves them dearly and through love does what they ask. And then on her birthday, all she longs for is companionship, which is understandable since shes pretty isolated in the forest. She has no human contact aside from her three aunts. She has her family but no other friends aside from animals that she cant really talk to. Then when she finally meets a guy that she's quite taken with,she goes home and tells her family the good news. But all of those dreams are shattered once they tell her that none of that will happen for her. They turn her world upside down and reveal the truth about who she is and that her parents are still living and not only that but shes also royalty. That would be quite the shock for anyone. Her father even states that in the film. And Aurora reacts as any other person would.... She's heartbroken that what she dreamed of having will never be. She goes upstairs and cries her eyes out. But instead of running away with the guy she loves, she takes on the responsibility of being royalty for the three aunts she loves and for the people. Which is pretty noble. She sucks it up and obeys even though it crushes her dreams. Then she also has to meet her parents who are complete strangers to her. Imagine how that would be... And throughout the film, even though her screen time is short, her character shows pretty well. She's not only noble, but witty, friendly, elegant, loving, playful, imaginative and when you think about it, very independent. Its clear in the film that the three good fairies hardly know much about handling things in a human way. Not to discredit the three good fairies though. Aurora cleans, most likely does the sewing and some of the cooking since the three fairies can hardly cook at all. I just feel like Aurora is extremely discredited.

Despite her not having a say in anything, I actually do relate to her, since we’re both hopeless romantics, along with this maturity that keeps us both grounded, and that fate being the force that interferes with our lives. In my opinion, all the choices that were made for her from being cursed to being sent away to be raised in the forest is Fate basically taking control of how things should be done in the terms of time and that plans can instantly change or take a different approach, and not how people think they should be done in the terms of what best for her, which is more harm then good. The way I see Aurora is basically an example of her being a tool for Fate in the terms of a traditional princess. But despite that, it doesn’t change the fact that she is a kind hearted person who genuinely cares for those around her and has a loyalty to those she loves.

you can check out a certain DVD called "disney princesses , magic fairytales ,follow your dreams" where she is very sassy and cool plus she controls the kingdom on her own. But I would say that aurora does nothing because we don't have too much time to see her.Good video thought

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! The curse did not give Aurora a specific day! It gave her a freaken time period. "Before the sun sets on her 16th birthday". That's any time between now and her 16th birthday, which is 16 years. She can prink finger any time and fall asleep.

Looking forward to Ariel's video, but I'm pretty sure looking back at it, I'll understand why her dad didn't want her going to the surface. She's only 16! Still my favourite princess, with a very dark origin story.

I love the music, the songs and the art is beautiful!! Even the prince is a good person. This is my favorite movie (along with Alice in wonderland and Mulan).

Oh Wotso, if you think the version you read is weird, then I'm guessing you didn't read the other version where the prince RAPES the princess while she's asleep, and she has her twins while STILL SLEEPING. But anyway, while I absolutely love each of the Disney princesses, Aurora is my least favorite. I wish she was more involved in her own story. She has a beautiful design, and voice, but not much was done with her. So, she comes off as rather bland to me. People say Snow White is too naive, but at least she did something in her story. Heck, even when Aurora was in Sofia the First, she didn't really do anything. There's not much that can be done with her because of the little personality she had in Sleeping Beauty. I hate that I'm not a big fan of Aurora, because Sleeping Beauty is a GORGEOUS movie. I absolutely love the designs of the characters and settings, and the songs are beautiful. Sleeping Beauty truly is an epic fantasy movie. I just wish Aurora was an epic princess. :/ As for my favorite traditional princess, I'll have to go with Cinderella. Aside from loving her as a kid, I think she's the closest to being proactive like Ariel, Belle, etc. She is able to stand up for herself, and doesn't give up on her dreams despite her situation. She's a very strong person, and I admire that as someone who's also had a rough life. I sometimes think that if Cinderella was able to live through being mistreated by her stepfamily, then I can be strong and achieve my dreams like she did.

I doubt many people would see this but I think Aurora has a rather sad story. She’s never given a choice in her own life to start with. An infant taken from her parents because of a cursed placed upon her because of someone else’s actions, being saved by someone else and then being raised without the knowledge of her true birth. She was probably very sheltered growing up for her protection and was never able to grow the way a normal child would. When she finally gets a choice and chooses to be with Phillip, she has an emotional truck dumped on her and is essentially told she has to be someone she never was in order to appease others. In the end Phillip and Aurora do find each other, but not because of what she does since she’s literally put in a trance and then forced to sleep until someone else comes to save her. Aurora is never given a choice in her life and her life has been shaped by the reactions or needs of others. When she finally makes a choice it’s taken away from her and at the end she’d have so much pressure put on her to be the perfect princess whilst the didn’t even know her name was Aurora until the day prior. Perfect is a sad facade and she still gets blamed for it.

Aurora is my favorite of the three original, and also all the princesses. I had a short phase where I liked Mulan, but I think for overall movie it's definitely Aurora. Also, Prince Phillip is best prince.

I love Aurora! She's my second favorite. But I always hate that she's in the pink dress. Her dress is blue, Disney, get it right! Quit showing her in a pink dress. Or it could have been purple.

Aurora was my favorite. But I guess your favourite depends on how you interpreted the story, and what was going on in your environment. In the 80's (my childhood) we had the AIDs epidemic that no one understood, The War on drugs, and of course blades in our Halloween candy. For people my age we had a fear of the unknown, and when we tried to ask we either got confusing answers, or nun at all. For myself I wanted to be like Ariel, but I felt like Aurora. And Maleficent represented the unknown. Not once did the fairies explain to Aurora who or what Maleficent was. Aurora was blindly walking into a situation she had no idea was dangerous. Which is how myself and others felt as well. The adults in Sleeping Beauty and our lives meant well..but shielding us from harm was not the way to go adout it. I mean heck you think burning spinning wheels are extream, try the attack on music that Al Goar and his wife did.

Why are we even bothering to reference "Maleficent?" That movie was an atrocity that castrated the Mistress of all Evil and completely ruined the story. She didn't get invited, that's it. She's vindictive and spiteful, not a rape allegory. She's not Aurora's surrogate mother, she's her would be murderer. That's it. That fucking movie needs to die.

I realize that Esmeralda is not an official Disney Princess in the franchise, but in the future I’d love to see a whole story vid about her. A lot of people love Esmeralda, and it would be educational to go into the history of gypsies and their migration into Europe. More specifically, how gypsy women were forced to get by in such a new environment, and the history and meaning of dancing in her culture.

Out of all the Disney Princesses, Aurora is easily my number one least favorite, followed by Ariel and Jasmine. Ironically, Ariel and Jasmine were my second and third favorites as a child. As an adult now, I find Ariel to be quite whiny and something of a spoiled brat, while Jasmine I feel could have been a tad more interesting. I don't dislike her, though- she just lost her spot on my top three list. : P

My favorite classic Disney princess is sometimes Cinderella and sometimes Snow White. I love the Cinderella 2015 movie (It is actually quite possibly my favorite movie of all time) and so my favorite Disney Princess as of late is Cinderella. But Snow White is also really awesome! My favorite princess overall is Belle with Merida a close second. Of the classical period princesses though I like Cinderella slightly over the other two with Snow White taking second. I really like that you use historical/book references in your videos! For me, in order to really understand Walt's Disney (especially like the older ones like these), you have to understand the time period it was made in alongside with the book reference Walt focused on. Though, for me, Aurora isn't a lacking character because she's as developed as she needs to be. Like you said before, Aurora is princess with no complete control of the curse placed on her. Naturally, this means that she also cannot stop the curse herself, and needs help. The help is she gets is the one thing she can control: her love, Prince Phillip. It's that love that they have one another that allows Phillip to put everything on the line to save Aurora, who dreams of his arrival just as she dreamt of their meeting. It's really true love at it's finest. That's why it's really sad to know that her and the two classical Disney princesses are so misunderstood---people totally miss the deep meaning and morals of Walt's princesses. Thanks for making this! :)

My favorite Disney Princess is Ariel because she holds a special place in my heart. Ariel is also very heartwarming like Littlefoot from Don Bluth's Land Before Time. I know The Land Before Time is not Disney but its by a former Disney Animator Don Bluth. I'm both a Disney Fan and a Don Bluth Fan.

Honestly I don't like the orginal 3 princess' that much,especially Snow White, I hate her. I do respect them though, they started everything and paved the way for the other princess' we have now. Maybe it's cause I grew up during the rennisonce era,in fact I was born right when it started,well 1990 so a year after it technically started with Ariel. So I've only had the modern princess' to really influence me as I grew up.

I love Belle and I like Cinderella in the third movie she was so brave and she really stood up for herself after all this time.🌹📚📕📓

I admire Sleeping Beauty for the stunning artwork that it is, and the music. All the drama, visuals and sound are all the right blends for a great epic! The ballet is just as grand. :) On one hand, as far as character development goes, I'd have to say Cinderella is my favorite traditional Disney princess. On the other hand, Aurora is about on par with Cinderella for me, but for different reasons. I've always kind of enjoyed some characters that are simpler. And that's what I think is the point about Aurora's character, she's meant to be simpler. Not simpler as in dumb or dull, but if you look at just about any version of the original fairy tale, she's not much of a character. She is just as Isaac says, she's a character surrounded by a lot of reactions, and doesn't have a say in much of what happens to her. I get annoyed when I hear a lot of people say that she is the heroine of her story and she's really bland, but the thing is, I don't think she's the heroine at all. Sure, the fairy tale is technically named after her, and the plot revolves around her, but that's just it, she is in the center of the story, but it's everyone else who actually makes the story, and their actions that make up the plot are about her. I see it as Aurora, and Philip, for that matter, being two bystanders who happen to fall into the crossfire of the fairies and kings versus Maleficent. The title "Sleeping Beauty" is a little misleading for those who believe Aurora is supposed to be the main character, so I can understand the confusion, but I think what the title really translates to is something along the lines of, "Operation Save the Princess," instead of it being about the princess herself. And "Operation Save the Princess" is about everyone either for or against the mission to save her, not about her. Aurora is merely the one that the whole operation to save her is for. Besides, in the Golden Age of Disney, they were still working on things like deep character development, so looking at characters like Aurora is still watching Disney in their earliest stages of making deep characters, especially female leads meant to be princesses. Though by that point, they did come out with a few major wins in female leads in general, like Snow White to a considerable degree, Cinderella, Lady, Alice, Wendy, and the three fairies. So they were doing some things right. That said, however, they were still going pretty traditional in retelling fairy tales. The reason why characters like Cinderella, Alice, and Wendy were much more developed in character was because in their original stories, they played much bigger parts. Whereas Aurora, again, barely has any role to play on her own in her original tale, which really isn't her fault, it's just how she was originally written. We can see more modern retellings of fairy tales from Disney, like The Little Mermaid, Tangled, or Frozen, where they not only develop deeper female leads for their princesses, but they also deviated drastically from the original tales. The traditional Disney princess films are pretty true to the original fairy tales, and they seemed more concerned with retelling them as just that. So I personally don't really have a problem with Aurora, because retelling her as the princess in the original fairy tale who just got caught in the crossfire of everyone else's conflict merely surrounding her, and without having her personally involved, is accurate, and that's what she's supposed to be, because the original is what early Disney was going for. So she's not meant to be a deeper character, which is why I think it's unfair to see her being held up to the higher standards of other Disney princesses, who are meant to be deeper and more proactive.

A theory on what Maryweather would have given Aurora was the talent for leadership, which would have made her a more formidable foe to Maleficient as she would have been more strategic in her approach against the evil fairy.

My favorite Golden Age Disney princess, and Cartoon is Aurora, and Sleeping Beauty. Merryweather is my favorite character out of that movie. I love the story and I find that people who try to write Aurora off, are judging her by standards for women today. The earlier Disney Princesses reflect the time that their movies,were made in and in some instances, the time their stories were set in. Cinderella is my second favorite, of the golden age princesses, and is the one of the first three, who's original movie, I have seen more times My favorite Disney Renaissance Princess is Belle and Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Renaissance movie, Ariel gets honorable mention for being my second favorite. The prettiest Disney Princess doll sculpt, goes to Ariel, especially the Disney Designer Dolls. My vote for the most over rated princesses would be Anna and Elsa. I know that Frozen made Disney over a billion dollars world wide, but I wasn't that impressed with it, and have only seen it once in it's entirety.

Now that I know that Aurora had little screen time, I think that is why Maleficient is so popular. They needed a star of the show and since Prince Philip also didn't quite become that, the villian became popular. Hence the remake Maleficient and being the worst villian in Descendants.

So Disney's big feminist, post- Aurora comeback was The Little Mermaid? The movie where some airhead gave up the most interesting thing about her- being a mermaid (and thereby all the people who ALREADY loved her)- for a man she knew nothing about except that he was pretty? The movie in which that same airhead simultaneously gave up her voice (because who needs to vocalize their intellect when you have tits and a tiny waist)? The same airhead whose choices nearly resulted in the destruction of her kingdom which she subsequently chose to leave anyways for a man she had only interacted with for a couple days? Hate to break this to you Disney, but... #EpicFail I'm not of the mind that every Disney Princess should shill feminism but The Little Mermaid was in less progressive than Sleeping Beauty in a lot of ways.
