The third gift: more screen time in her own movie

There is no evidence that Maleficent arrived to curse Aurora per se. She was mad because she wasn't invited and arrived to allow the King and Queen to apologize for this slight. However Merriweather made it worse and only then did Maleficent get her curse on. She evil, yes, but she has manners and style.

I forget she’s 16. She looks like she’s at least 19 in this film’s style lol

Merryweather is very funny with how ruthless she is, she probably would have given Aurora the trait of bravery

I always felt Merryweather was a contrast to her name. Like Buttercup from PPG. I believed she would give Aurora intelligence or a sense of independence. But happiness is a Disney way of things.

What do you think Maleficent would have blessed Aurora with if she decided not to curse her?

I always thought it was intelligence(or something along those lines). Seen she already had the looks.

I think Merryweather is the more intelligent of the three fairies. It seems to me that she thinks things through more than the other two and stops them from making horrible choices.

I think Merryweather did indeed achieve her goal. We can see from how they prepare for Aurora's 16th birthday that Merryweather was constantly and only focused on making things perfect for Aurora, while the other two mainly focused on what THEY wanted. Flora wanted to make a ruffly, bow covered pink gown, even though she'd never done something like that by hand. Fauna wanted to make a cake, but she' NEVER cooked anything. Clearly, as the youngest, Merryweather had been in charge of the more laborious tasks. Fauna would have been the nurse type... she dotes on even the concept of loving a baby when they're discussing raising the princess in secret. She glosses over the idea of the hard parts like feeding, crying, illness.... Flora was plainly just "in charge". She spends a lot of time bossing the others, so I get the feeling that hard work was not something she'd partake in. That leaves little Merryweather, the feisty, pragmatic, and practical fairy who puts aside her eternal fairy nature to empathize with and love Aurora. While the other two stammer and act like fools when Aurora almost catches their birthday plans, Merryweather swoops to the rescue with an excuse to have Aurora leave the house for a good amount of time. When they mention plans to make a huge cake and fancy dress, Merryweather is concerned, stating she's never made such a fancy cake. Flora blows her off, saying that Fauna will make the cake, because she always wanted to and it's her last chance. Merryweather immediately gets more worried, saying she knows that Flora can't sew and Fauna has never cooked. She can't imagine them making anything worthy of a royal 16th birthday. As Fauna makes the dress, Merryweather is dumbfounded by Flora's.... "technique". The huge hole in the bottom "for the feet to go through" has her initially confused, showing she knows the basics of dress-making after many years of raising a young lady, and she doesn't get what Flora is doing. She also shows consternation at being the dress dummy; she's not stupid, and knows that she looks nothing like her dear Aurora. Add to that, she's wearing her own dress, making the shape horrendous. But, she bears it, occasionally crying at her "Rose" leaving, sniping Flora's color choice and ridiculous lack of skill, and giving Fauna cooking guidance in an attempt to save SOMETHING of this disaster. Meanwhile, Flora and Fauna are in their own world, thinking they're doing everything right and perfect. Eventually, when Flora and Fauna speak to try and get the other to compliment them, revealing their incompetence, Merryweather has HAD it. Her temper flares, scolding the other two for their foolishness and not thinking of poor Aurora. She shames them, saying what they think their sweet girl will feel coming home to such a mess. She turns and storms upstairs, flinging away the shambles of Flora's botched gown, doing what she feels she really should have done years ago; getting their wands. As she does, Fauna turns to Flora and admits that Merryweather is correct, while Merryweather returns. Flora panics, wanting to be in charge still and freaking out that they'll be caught. She has the group stuff up every nook and cranny... except the chimney, of course. Then, she doles out the jobs just as they were.... except for Merryweather, who she now has take over cleaning the cottage. Merryweather is grumpy at this assignment, but accepts it because Flora is leader and Merryweather is clearly used to being forced to clean or do the least enjoyable tasks. Still, Merryweather proves true to her name and makes cleaning pleasant by skipping with the broom, vanishing the dust, and waltzing with the mop. She starts a little battle with Flora over the gowns color, leading to trouble, but she still finishes her job, if almost forgetting to de-spell the mop. After Aurora returns and they have to break her heart, Merryweather is clearly the most distressed, looking heartbroken herself. She complies though, the whole time likely thinking of her gift, because after they bring Aurora to the castle and leave her in her chambers, Merryweather clearly is regretting things. She's covering her sadness with annoyance, huffing that she doesn't get why Aurora has to marry some "silly old prince". She wants her girl to marry her love, and feels bad for being a part of something that hurts Aurora. When they all realize they can't hear Aurora's soft crying anymore, they rush in to see her vanish into the hidden passage. As they pursue her, Merryweather checks EVERYTHING, even though the other two checked before her. Clearly, she's taking no chances and wants to make sure. After Aurora's curse begins, Merryweather is devastated. She knows her gift saved Aurora, but she still feels terrible and cries openly. When they figure out that Phillip is Aurora's beloved, Merryweather is constantly rushing ahead at Maleficent's palace, nearly getting caught in her eagerness to save him and then Aurora. She even goes out of her way to vent her anger, using her magic to petrify Diablo solely for her own satisfaction. All in all, Merryweather proves in her little ways that she was the one who was most concerned with making sure Princess Aurora was happy, even if she couldn't give her a blessed happiness. She cooked, cleaned, made clothes, got used to thinking on her feet, and took on every task she had to in order to give Aurora a good life.

Aurora looks like her mother anyway, genetics you see, so Flora's gift was a COMPLETE waste...

Thoughts at the beginning of video, I think the original gift was to be grace. Beauty, grace, and song. Flora gave beauty. Flora, another word for plants or flowers, represents the beautiful nature of the world around us...emulated by Aurora through her sunny hair and lips that shame the rose. Fauna gave song. Fauna, or the animals, representing not only fine skills of communication but also that communication that all creatures possess: a voice. And none more complex or gorgeous than that of the birds. Merriweather being grace. Merriweather referring to good weather patterns, the sun, etc. that can demonstrate the ability to handle any situation or environment with poise, grace, and sound disposition.

I think Aurora had a happy life growing up in the cottage, so Merryweather was able to provide happiness to her after all.

Just imagine if Maleficent had been invited and bestowed a gift instead of a curse. It would've been the most powerful gift of all.

Merryweather was unable to directly give her the gift of happiness but she did so indirectly. Aurora found the prince she loved (albeit she was sleep when he arrived), and was happy in the end. I also think if we did not have a direct answer about it, I'd say she would have given her the gift of tenacity. Merriweather is a fireball of passion and strength but is often stopped because given the time period they were in, it was unladylike to be that fierce. But she is a rebel! What would have happened if Maleficent was invited?

Merryweather: “Let this sweet baby grow into A BOSSA** B*tch.” Clearly the intended gift was personality, something Aurora definitely lacks

I literally just watched sleeping beauty yesterday and I really asked myself “what was her gift supposed to be” I’m not even kidding when I say I’m freaking out rn 😂

I agree completely with this theory. Not only was it confirmed in the animator commentary but is evident in her dialogue with the animals in the forest. She's beautiful and singing and holds all the animals attention but she is visibly sad while looking upon her kingdom from a tree branch. This is then solidified by her true love (unknowingly) when she meets the Prince. They even walk back to the same tree branch she sadly sighed on moments earlier and now sighs happily in his arms. He is her happiness. So, Merryweather not only intended to give the gift of happiness, but fulfilled her gift of happiness by vowing that should any harm come to Aurora, she would only be awakened by her true love's kiss or her happiness. A bit misogynistic plotline, but meh.

Wow. "Maleficent" actually gave us the answer to this inquiry.

I believe Maryweather provided Aurora with hope, which technically she said she gave a ray of hope to her, but hope in general, which is something that would or could lead Aurora to happiness, which I believe is a far greater gift, a gift that can lead to all the things Flora and Fauna have already bestowed to live on for her lifetime. The scene reminds me of the greek myth of Pandora's box. Malefecient bestowed evil to keep Aurora from becoming more then human. After the evil was blessed on her, Maryweather gave hope, which was the last thing that came out of Pandora's box.

The faeries are effectively the Seelie court, those elves or mythological creatures that gain by the good of humanity, while Maleficent is one of the Unseelie court, those that benefit from the harm inflicted on humanity. They tried not inviting Maleficent originally to avoid Unseelie presence at Aurora's birth, and it actually would have been acceptable to Maleficent if they blocked all fae from the proceedings, but the invitation of the Seelie and not inviting the Unseelie cast an insult on the Unseelie and picked sides in the conflict between the Seelie and the Unseelie. Maleficent gives the humans the opportunity to apologize to avoid casting a slight against her, but Merryweather tells her it was on purpose, that Maleficent was not wanted, and confirms the slight against her. This is why Maleficent curses Aurora.

Can you imagine how tragic the story would have been instead if Maleficent had shown up a minute later? Also, if she arrived a couple minutes earlier, could the combined magic of all three fairies have broken the curse outright?

I use to think what was merry whether's original wish going to be for Aurora. Finally some answers. Great stuff love disney mysteries.

Really insightful! This is one of my favourite films of all time. I love how the film appears to be surface level, but upon analysis (psychologically and metaphorically), the film holds many truths exemplified in symbols. And yet another layer of subtlety I didn’t notice until now. Thank you!

I disagree. I have seen Sleeping Beauty many times and while Flora always seemed to focus on the beauty of things and Fauna was always the peacemaker, Merryweather always seemed to be the practical one. The one who always infused the situation with logic and practical thinking. When the fairies were planning to raise Aurora alone in the woods, she was the one who tried to be practical about the fairies living like mortals and raising a child when they didn't know how. When they were cleaning the house, the other two fairies tried to do it the simple way, but the dress was a crazy mess and the cake was melting before Merryweather's logic and persistence paid off and they used magic to get things done. A calm, logical mind is far more useful to a young Princess than being happy all the time.

Other than the answer being told on the platinum edition DVD, I love your theory. I had no idea that the fairies' names tied into the gifts they gave Aurora. That's so clever. The idea of Merryweather wanting to give Aurora the gift of joy/happiness makes complete sense. Great video, as always. :)

I think this is because of two reasons: #1 the writers didn't have ideas on the 3rd gift #2 at this time when the film was made and the time where the story would have taken place in real life, a woman's attributes were limited to cooking, cleaning, beauty,grace and bearing children, being a mother and wife. I doubt that the gift of independence, headstrong, etc would not make sense, but being positive and pleasant yes, because women were expected to be this way as well

My personal take is the following: The three fairies represent primary aspects of the world in which humans live -- Flora represents plant life; Fauna represents the animal kingdom, and Merryweather, well, originally she was to be called Serena, as in "serene." We know this because Disney authorized publishment of a children's book well before the 1959 release of the film. This book tells the tales of both Cinderella & Sleeping Beauty consecutively. Disney did that as a sort of pre-marketing effort, promoting the film in book form and tied to Disney's wildly successful Cinderella. Like Snow White before it, Cinderella saved Disney from near bankruptcy. In this book, Merryweather's character was given the name Serena. In any case, Merryweather was to represent the atmospheric elements, quite literally, the weather. But since Flora already bestowed the gift of a beauty so rare that Aurora would always walk in springtime (thus, fair weather), we can guess that Merryweather's gift would be one concerning royal bearing, as in 'serene highness.' A sense of serenity implies an even, calm temperament, not unlike fair weather. When discussing this film and the character of Briar Rose / Aurora, animation historians and critics often point out that her bearing and character is royal in nature, not unlike a queen -- all the more apparent considering she was raised as an orphaned peasant.

YET ANOTHER WONDERFUL THEORY THAT MAKES EVERYTHING ABOUT THE THIS FILM MORE CLEAR!!!!!!!! *and to answer my thoughts about this subject, I'd say Merryweather has achieved her goal for Aurora*

I also like how you delved into the reasoning behind the other two gifts as well, and in relations to their characters. Happiness and joy would definitely be the perfect gift as it can be transformed into all other special traits that you mentioned. Also, it sounds so beautiful as a third and final gift 😌 But because she lacked happiness she was incapable to accept she was a princess destined to live in the castle and away from the guy she just met in the woods and fell in love with. She couldn't show bravery, resolve and hope so fell into despair where maleficent was waiting.

Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney movie. I actually knew Mary Costa, the voice of Aurora. Sweet lady. 💕

I was thinking that Merryweather would've given Aurora a good sense of humor. Laughter often eases pressure from stressful situations, which Aurora would see a lot of as queen. Also, to me, Merryweather was the funniest of the three fairies. So, a gift like that from her would make sense.

During the movie you could tell Merryweather wanted happiness for Aurora, she was the only one that questioned why Aurora had to marry a prince and she was the only one that dared to disagree with the other two fairies about what Aurora wanted instead of what everyone wanted for Aurora, she is definitely my favorite character in this film

SIDENOTE - Loving the comments about a hypothetical reality where Maleficent was actually invited to the ceremony. Based on your research and the meaning of Maleficent (to cause harm and destruction by supernatural means) - I imagine she would give the gift of being able to vanquish her enemies through applied magic. Slightly controversial but not a terrible gift when going to war with other nations.
