Picked this up on a Steam sale and honestly was really surprised at the authenticity. I grew up as a half-white guy in Hong Kong and I was pleased to not only hear fluent Cantonese, but the actual Hong Kong accent of Cantonese. With full grammar and everything (yes the swearing is ~90% correct too). I think the review also failed to pick up on the fact that while the geography was mostly simplified/fabricated, there were clear landmarks that took inspiration from the city (British clocktower, government building, Victoria Park, etc). Additionally, details like the taxi designs and colors, the large KMB buses and sampling the sounds of the street (e.g. the crossing lights/meters) are straight from the city too. I'd argue the design and environment deserved a 10/10 for its inspiration, which comparing it even to the big dogs of Saints Row and GTA, Sleeping Dogs actually shows more innovation there. Would love another in the series to have them hash out some of the issues with combat but making guns a scarcity was genius. Personally this was better than GTA 4 and Saints Row 2 for me, but short of SR3, SR4 and GTA5.
In the sequel, I do hope they include the Kowloon Peninsula as the main area. As that is where the majority of the triads actually live and are based... the HK Island is just where they go to 'play' and make money. It also has much more cultural stuff going on there, and looks less like a 'yellow-washed' New York. We didn't get to see the slumlike areas as much like Mong Kok where you get tin shacks on top on 20 story buildings. That would be perfect for its free running sections.
haroof its an online- only game and it came out in late 2014. it ended now but the game wasn't that good lol. it had nothing to do with wei or anything, which is why im disappointed
I started playing this game a week ago. I love it. It's like a weird combo between GTA and Arkham games. And I do enjoy the undercover detective in the Hong Kong Triads. No matter how iffy the scrip is. Maybe it's just that I like the Hong Kong setting. But I've enjoyed playing this game a lot more than GTA V. I prefer brutal fighting over constant gun action.
Sleeping Dogs Triad War is currently in development. they said its set in the same universe, so i guess Wei Shen wont be returning :( but we should be getting some video later this year :)
Don't find the main character to be very accessible or any of the characters in the story for that matter. Would have preferred a more exciting protagonist, with a bit more personality.
It is a melee heavy game, heavy emphasis on martial arts and environmental damage. Gun fight is crap and poorly done. It is good at first but gameplay can get monotonous in time.
It started out original IP but then became True Crime: Hong Kong and then was dropped by Activision and picked up by Square Enix, thats why it was so easy to rename it. I
I played it on pc, then on xbox 360. To be honest, it felt better on a controller for me and my pc lagged a lot thus the shooting was so unbearable and had to set graphic level to the lowest setting
Lots of nitpicking but take it all with a grain of salt. This review is a little overly critical but the game is amazing! Love it a lot and kinda upset people are comparing it to GTA just cause of the open world. Great game! FUCK ACTIVISION for canceling this game! I hope they are regretting their mistake.
