Sleeping Next To Busy CSX Railroad Tracks, Folkston Georgia Trains! Renting House Next To Main Line

Renting The Road Masters Railroad House For A Night! How Many Trains Go Through The Folkston Funnel? Amtrak Auto Train and Long CSX Freight Trains In Folkston Georgia. One of Americas best rail fanning and train spotting towns that is known for the Folkston Funnel where CSX main lines converge just before entering Florida. There is a public Railfan observation platform here along with cabooses, small homes and camper hookups that you can rent to watch trains pass by. We stopped at Folkston on the way back to Ohio to see a few trains and noticed a number on the side of a building for a caboose and home that you can rent by the night. We called and were lucky enough to get the house for a night so I could see how busy these tracks are. When we arrived in Folkston at 5:30pm there was a southbound train passing through. We got the house around 6pm and the first train went by at 6:20pm. Next train went by at 7:14pm followed by the Amtrak Auto Train at 7:45pm going northbound. Trains passed by at 8:05pm, 9:04pm, 9:33pm, 10:13pm and then another Amtrak train at 12:35am. Trains passed by at 1:10am, 1:20am, 3:30am, 3:54am, 4:37am, 5:05am and then the Amtrak Auto Train passed by again at 5:15am going southbound this time. Another Amtrak train followed that one at 6:20am. More trains passed by at 8am, 9:09am but then it wasn't until 1:15pm that the next train passed by and it was the X261 southbound. I was surprised that there was a 4 hour lull between trains. So to sum it up there were 20 trains in 20 hours. We left about 1:30pm because another Railfan there who was very familiar with the train moves told us that it would be a while before the next train came, possibly a couple more hours. From Folkston we drove to Rocky Top, Tennessee and got a motel next to a CSX line. See my video of the coal train that I filmed on that line near Jellico, Tennessee. Best frequencies for Folkston, Georgia are 160.590 for the road channel and 452.9375 for EOT.
Filmed February 25 and 26, 2022.

I could stay there - no problem :) I can imagine sitting in the sun and watching big lashups with long trains roll by all day. Relaxing! It's nice that Ms. Tooth travels with you and is a railfan :) Please thank her for the opposite side of the train video.

I could as well, because my childhood home, look up Sherman Street, Gloucester City, NJ, is about a block away from a once busy railroad, it used to have four trains a day on it. Now it only has two a day.

In regard to the single stack train about 11 minutes into the video: Most single stack CSX trains are either coming from or going to the Baltimore, MD area. There is a long tunnel under the city (about 2 miles in length) - The Howard Street Tunnel that is too low in height to accept double stacks. Currently, CSX & the City are working to make the tunnel double stack friendly. Do not know when the completion date is projected. We Maryland rail fans are interested in the project. So all traffic from/to the New York area are single stacks. Just an FYI.
@t.j.carroll8512
@t.j.carroll8512 2 года назад
I was wondering the same thing. Used to be a low tunnel in DC but CSX fixed it a little while back.
@perchlarkin
@perchlarkin 2 года назад
There is the same thing with trains running between New England and Chicago. A tunnel with a low height clearance in Western Massachusetts. BTW that tunnel can handle double stacked garbage containers. But they're international containers. While the rest are domestic. Believe it is the Haasac Tunnel.
@kendufresne
@kendufresne 2 года назад
@@perchlarkin almost correct, Hoosac tunnel :)
@johndanaher6371
@johndanaher6371 2 года назад
Might be longer than I thought on this project. I just looked it up and there are 2 other bridges that have to be replaced along the line in the city, not just the tunnel. Great explanation though. I figured the same thing about that particular train too.

Loved the lodgings. I lived for years right at a main track line and loved those sounds. Only woke up when the usual train didn’t arrive, & stayed awake until it did or fm radio said why. Once woke up during the one and only crash/derailment within hearing. Two people in the automobile fatalities, no train crew injuries, long night. But mostly, trains just a relaxing part of my young adult working life. I would stay in that loc for a week, great vacation for me!

Glad to see Mrs. Tooth enjoying the great outdoors. Norfie still thinking I can't believe I fell for that silly carrier trick. Chessie had that heh-heh look and thinking finally got rid of that interloper. The tail wasn't exactly wagging upon return of that feline interloper. And so it goes. 2nd CSX single stack: There's some overpass in the upper northeast on the CSX system that is too low for double stacks, thus single stacks. 3rd CSX double stack/autorack: 4 jacks @ 6 axles each = 24 axles minus 540 total axles = 129 cars. Keep up the good work. The Missus should start her own channel.

As you say, it's flat down there. Also, containers are pretty light -- only about 25 tons per container and often less. So a double-stack unit is only carrying about 50 tons of cargo, compared to a grain car, which is shorter and carries up to 100 tons.
