I think Stephen King wanted the conflict of the film to be the villain to fall in love with the girl and battle with the beast within him. The problem is he couldn’t get that conflict across.

I saw this movie when I was young and all I could remember was Brian Krause because of Charmed and I had no Idea Ron Perlman was that jerk Cop, Alice Krige (who was that Cult lady from Silent Hill) was the Cat mother and Mädchen Amick (who was Betty's mother in Riverdale and she was in that show Witches of East End) was the Protagonist Final Girl.
