Great!! I'm a trumpet player and I was just waiting for the horse whinny without the ability to half valve it. To my surprise it sounded really good. Then I remembered, oh yeah....these guys are attending Julliard! Very nice job everyone.
Trombones can half-valve! I don’t think any of them in this performance have a peashooter, all of them have at least an F valve, but if nothing else the basses can play up super high and do a horse sound.
@@OliviaSNava with enough lip flexibility you don't even have to have a valve to get a good horse whinny on a trombone - at least sound like a trumpet whinny up there
@@matthewburgess7017 If another player does something worthy of a thumbs-up, but you can't give them one because you're about to play, people will just stick their leg out and wiggle it instead to convey the same message. You can see this at the time stamp mentioned above, with one bass trombonist approving the quality of the low note form the other bass trombonist..
Great performance! I am a saxophone player. But I do like to listen to the capabilities of the other instruments. Thank you. Have a happy, healthy, prosperous, creative and safe holiday season.
I'm just blown away by all this The melody sounds so good on trombone and the harmony is so perfect The way it all comes together and the articulation is just soooo good
Julliard gave the world distinguished alumus Dr. Philip Jameson class of 1964, Master's 1965, Doctorate from Columbia 1980. Professor of trombone at the University of Georgia 1967-2009. Founder of the University of Georgia Trombone Choir. Probably the best trombone studio in the country at a state university for the longest time.
Looks like every RCA ribbon mic in town was present for this recording. But hey. Great musician deserve great mics. Lovely playing. And Joe’s version of IGSOY on Boneified is one of the best recorded. Up there with Buddy Morrow and the Cincinnati Pops and TD himself. Those are my top three. All equal.
Thanks, Professor Alessi! Thanks, guys! Fabulous sounds! I'll share this with my young guys here in Tallinn. --George, MM in trombone with Per Brevig,1977-1979 (Good times!)
that was really cool, I wish I could hear the sleigh bells a smidge more and the slapstick is an iconic sound in this piece that should have been played. Superb playing though :) Thanks for posting it!!!!
Quite so, and not only with this size ensemble. Depends on the ensemble, and boy, does it depend on the conductor! Lots of those things are vastly dispensable.
