In this Q&A segment, Mike Petrowski from Michigan asks:
"Recently we've noticed, most of our 18-22" fish are coming on double streamer rigs, whereas the hog-johnsons seem to only come out on single rigs
- What are your thoughts on fishing two streamers?
- What's your typical rig? size, colors, distances, lengths, connection styles, weight position (big vs. little)
- Any thoughts on two fly rigs provoking bigger predatory response? - Situations, rivers, weather, other impacts why you would or wouldn't throw two streamers."

Mr. Galloup, Thanks for the reply on both my questions about 5 wt fly rods and streamer fishing. I'm saving up and hope to make the trip to the Slideinn in the spring of 2017! The reason I'm choosing the Slideinn and your guide service is because of the extra time you take to answer questions from average fly fisherman like myself. I also completely agree with your outlook on fly fishing and keeping it simple. Not to mention the fact that your fly patterns and Chuck Kraft's have caught more huge trout than all the other flies in my box combined. Go big or go home!

Kelly good advice I like the comment about giving the fish too much credit with bigger fly in the back, we tend to over think the scenario, instead of thinking like a fish. I never fished a two fly streamer rig but I have had a fish smash a large streamer several times but not commit only to hook him on a smaller streamer after changing flies. I will definitely have to give it a try this season. Thanks, Roger

When you say the front fly do you mean the one on the end ?

I’m as dumb as a trout. I can’t speak for all of us pea brains but the runt of the school is the one I would eat. Maybe that explains the response to the smaller trailer. Your videos are really entertaining. Thank you.

Mr. Galloup, I fish a large trout river in western Virginia that doesn't fit the stereotypical "eastern trout stream". It's like a native stream on steroids! It's 3x as wide as the average Virginia trout stream and over my head in places. I'm having a hard time getting my streamers down to where the fish are. I've used the air flow streamer line you suggested and set up my leader the same way you do with some success. The problem is the stream is just not wide enough in places to get the full beniefit of the sinking head. Any suggestions on a stream that's deep but not as wide as a river like the Madison. Thanks

+pvtcartman Thats a tough situation basically all you can do it fish straight up stream. trying to go across stream in rivers that are narrow and deep is almost impossible. There is just to much current. fishing upstream you do not have the surface pressure against the line and it gets a chance to go a bit deeper. You may have to go with a floating line and weight the leader and your fly. More vertical jig style than cross stream techniques. KG

Dumbell Head, Weight the fly, run fluorocarbon leader

Run a longer leader and mend more so it gives the fly a chance to slow down and sink maybe try that and see if that'll help

I like to fish with barbless hooks so do you think there is a chance of the trailer rig slipping off the front hook?

We are using either a Clinch Knot or the Davy's Knot to attach the trailer.

Kelly, I realize this video is 5 years old but seeing you respond to some more recent posts gives me some hope - what weight rod/fly line is typically used or recommended for this style of fishing? I can lob your original dungeon on my 6 weight but adding another streamer to it seems like a difficult cast (armature here). I'm looking forward to seeing you this August and can't wait for my float trip with Starr, focusing on streamers in the morning - hoping to learn a lot and up my game.
@TheSlideinn
@TheSlideinn 3 года назад
Bretton , not knowing what rod it is I am just guessing but if you can do the dungeon then you can probably add a small dropper, little more pause and drift on the back cast and you should be fine. KG

@@TheSlideinn Thanks Kelly, you're the man. The rod is a Scott Flex, kind of a medium-fast rod. I'll have to check your rod stock when I get there and maybe you guys can get me into a dedicated large/medium streamer rod. I've never been more stoked for a trip!

What materials and tools would you recommend for a starter to purchase including type of fly to attempt tying? Have vice.
@TheSlideinn
@TheSlideinn 5 лет назад
We actually will have a video coming out soon on exactly this. I would recommend a bobbin, scissors, hair stacker, hackle pliers, and a whip finish to start. As far as materials, pick a pattern and start building your materials from there. You will notice a ton of cross over with materials the more patterns you tie. I.E if you are tying an elk hair caddis you can use the exact same materials to tie a tilt wing dun.

I will never use a dropper, or any 2-fly rig. Way too often the extra line/fly will wrap around a hooked fish and injure it. I think 1 fly should be the Law everywhere.
