Wow - as a novice fly tyer, I learned more in this 27 minute video than I did in the last 5 hours of YouTubing. Thank you for posting.

Your explanation on how to do a correct pinch wrap and how you manage your thread is the best I have ever heard. Damn your good and I appreciate it.

Thanks so much. Been tying for 3 years, making all the mistakes you mention. This was immensely useful.

You sometimes say you talk too much..all I know is the more you talk, the more I learn! We really appreciate your dedication to helping us improve our fly tying skills. I try to tie flies of all sorts, many I’ll never ever use, I just like the experience and the different techniques used, and to get better at it. Thank you Kelly and crew! Sincerely Charlie B. 🎣

Kelly, great video as always. You have done more for tying than all the others put together. You are always after John, I know it is in jest, but, I spent a day with John two years ago. Best day fishing of my life, caught a ton of fish, on a river that many say is marginal . John knows the rivers, helped correct mistakes in my casting and is good company. Guys like your team are a tremendous asset for all of us. Thanks again ! Chuck Lower

Thanks for taking the time to present the "mistakes and correction" video. You confirmed some things that I was doing right, and helped improve some things I wasn't. So, success!

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us Kelly. I'm a brand new tier and was looking for help tying in soft hackle. I discovered a lot of issues that I'm glad to deal with at the start. I was crowding the head so I didn't have room to work and I did not know the trick about twisting the bobbin to influence the direction my thread was laying. That little trick was a big help with tying in materials. And of course I was making all the other mistakes as well. I glad to introduce some good habits from the get-go. Thanks Kelly.

Thanks Kelly. I think we all make those mistakes from time to time. I was at a seminar at Schultz's in Ypsi a year or so ago and you guessed it, I rushed the head, and I know better. The good thing is I was able to fix it and have a decent fly but it still happens. BTW thanks for helping Mike out with his charity stuff he's doing for the two guys. Keep the good stuff coming.

Thanks Kelly - it's always good to review the basics! I learned to tie with 3/0 and was taught to minimize wraps. Watch a lot of tiers putting down a dozen wraps for every material (when two or three would have been plenty) because they never learned to make each wrap properly. Then there are the guys that take 5 minutes to use ten feet with a thousand wraps of 14/0 thread to build a tapered body... would have been a lot more practical to have tied in a piece of floss or used a larger thread. Each to their own eh?

Nice information, consistency. Plan, practice, understand your materials. Take your time. Remember, even in the worst case, a razor blade cleans off the hook for a second attempt very quickly.

Yep that was help full, great further explanation of proper thread procedure. the question i have is; in maintaining bobbin distance and tension logically you need a well adjusted bobbin. How do you adjust your bobbin to the proper tension and how much hand meat do you use additionally tension the spool if at all???? J

As always thanks again for another informative video. Quick question, whenever I tie a collar with deer hair I follow your exact procedure. It works extremely well and I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with it. However, when I buy one of your flies as a template to use while I tie The collar on these commercial flies lays back almost parallel with the body of the fly. Whenever I tie in a collar it stands that color up almost at a 45° angle to the body of the fly. Is there a particular technique to make that color lay down? Once again thanks for all the videos and I can’t wait to watch all the videos on the upcoming contests
@kellygalloup6073
@kellygalloup6073 3 года назад
Mel, commercial flies usually use the hair in front of the collar as part of the head, unlike how I do mine. It si a time saver for the tier.Then they push that hair back against the colloar with the first spin, that tends to lay the collar down a touch, try leaving the hair in front of the collar long and see if that gives you the look your going for. Thanks for watching, KG

Kelly, when using wax do you ever have trouble with it building up in the nozzle of the bobbin?
@kellygalloup6073
@kellygalloup6073 3 года назад
64 , Yes you can get a build up, especially if you pre wax the thread like some do. I tend to wax the thread when I need it and so dont get much build up. When I used to use prewaxed thread I would get build up so bad that I could barely get the thread thru. I would then run it under really hot water and it would clean out very quickly, sometimes I would have to run some small wire down them to get the really hard stuff, the little dental brushes you can buy now work well and have nylon brissels so they wont scratch the tips. thanks for watching. Kelly

there's an infinite number of ways to do things wrong. It's a tough topic.

There is that excellent scene from a Martin Scorcese movie about pool halls and hustling.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 3 года назад
Where Paul Newman goes to get new spectacles. And he goes into the pool hall. Last thing at night. And sets up his balls on the pool table. And starts to go through the basic. To figure out basically, 'what condition his condition is in'.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 3 года назад
This is why. I am seldom short of a fly. Such as the 'Black Pennell'. It's a useful generic 'searching' wet fly pattern. For a variety of different species. Of large, small and medium size fish (one can catch a large fish even on them). Strangely.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 3 года назад
There are only a small number of things that you can get wrong. About this fly. And if you do. They can go very wrong. To the point. Where you might as well. Rip it up and start again. Like in the 'song'.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 3 года назад
What I find though. Is the small simple wet fly pattern. Is a good gauge of where I am. Like in the movie with Paul Newman. Before I get into laying down any serious money. At the 'pool table' of fly fishing. With the competitor I am up against. Which is the large brown trout. Or whatever it is. I want to know. How actually well prepared. Or not. I am for this.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 3 года назад
The point about small simple wet flies. Or it could be a small dry fly. They are relatively 'faster' to dress. Than one large streamer fly. With a lot of moving parts, relationships and proportions. Just in order to practice with that pool table. Full of balls. And figure out. If your spectacles actually work. Or not. It's handy to have a fly. That you can make 'ten' of. In an afternoon. And one can always give them away to friends after. If you don't need the flies.
