The cliffs of Slieve League lie along the Atlantic coast of County Donegal and are some of the highest seacliffs in Europe.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

Sliabh Liag in Irish means “mountain of stone pillars” and that melodramatic description of what are, after all, cliffs is perhaps justified when reaching the viewpoint at the top of the hill.
We visited the cliffs at Christmas time, so in the middle of winter. So it has been possible for us to drive as far as the final pathway, which you’ll see in the video, but this won’t be possible at busier times of the year, so prepare for a long walk. But the countryside is so spectacular that walking is perhaps the best way to appreciate it.
As you look out onto the Atlantic Ocean it’s very easy to get the feeling that you’re on the edge of the world. And that’s certainly what our ancestors must have felt. When you think about it, as we gaze out on the ocean, the next stop is Canada or the East coast of the United States, so, in a sense, when our ancestors did the same they were on the edge of the known world.
On arriving at the first vantage point we experience the true majesty of this site. These cliffs are 596 metres (1,955 ft) high, nearly three times the height of the famous Cliffs of Moher. I think this fact is made all the more spectacular today since the top of the cliffs have ascended into the mist.
In order to gain more spectacular views you can walk up the stone paths that are carved into this wild and rugged landscape. And if you decide to brave the elements and climb further it’s in the knowledge that these paths have been treaded before you by countless pilgrims. There’s the remains of an early Christian monastic site in these mountains, and even before the arrival of Christianity, people journeyed in these mountains and have left their traces in ancient stone remains.
If you want to walk the full route, come prepared. Check out the weather forecast in advance and you’ll need appropriate clothing. Needless to say you’ll need to be relatively fit too - it’s quite a climb. But the rewards, as you can see, are worth it.

One of my favorite spots in all of Ireland. My wife and I have been there 2x (we're Americans). The first time, we hiked out the length of one of the promontories to get a close up of the old stone light house or signal station. Very bleak but beautiful. If I could telework for my job and move to this area, I would love it! The Irish are some of the nicest people I've met.

It’s an amazing spot alright Alan. Get to work on becoming a digital nomad and we’ll see you both back in Ireland again soon. Thanks for watching.

I've been blessed to visit these majestic cliffs in Summer 2000 - the experience was out of this world as indeed the whole County Donegal. Mysterious, high, changing colours (various shades of purple) and demanding fitness and attention. One of the wonders of the world, no doubt.

A visit to these cliffs is indeed a very special thing. I just visited the Cliffs of Moher, in county Clare, but in my view these cliffs in Donegal are a better experience.

@@nakedireland Donegal is so remote and unique, I also remember Mount Errigal as a very special landmark.

My dad was from near Adara and I used to come here on holidays up here many years ago. Havnt been for to longer time and will have to return someday. Its every bit as spectacular and more so when you come. i think to my knowledge and correct me if I'm wrong that along this road somewhere is the village of Glencolombkille. It's more than thirty years since is was over so forgive me if this is not quite correct. Beautiful video. thanks for posting

You’re quite right John. Glencolmcille is only 10 mins away by car. You’ll have to plan another trip back soon - the cliffs await you!

Lovely video - I was there in June 2022 as part of my circumnavigation of coastal Ireland on my tiny two stroke Yamaha 100. Rode the bike right out as far as I could - it nearly conked out on the first hill after the car park but so worth it when I got there,,,,,spectacular.

A stunning place on a clear day or when the mountain is shrouded in mist. Haven't been there in years and did get a clear day to reach the top☀😊

From my perspective it was just great to get a nice dry day over the Christmas period to go up there. Previously, when I visited in winter I got a soaking! But, what a view!

Thanks, that was beautiful. The colours are stunning. One day I will be there. One of the branches of my ancestors was from a place written as “Boa island” which I have been unable to locate on maps but I now realize that the spelling must be wrong in documents. I feel the call of the cliffs and rocks. One day, one day!

Terry, there’s a Boa Island in Lough Erne, which is in County Fermanagh - that could be where your ancestors are from. It’s on the border between Fermanagh and Donegal - ‘only just’ in N. Ireland, rather than the Rep. I hope that helps you discover your roots? Yes, I don’t know where you live but you should certainly make a pilgrimage to the old country!
