I remember teaching Slim's son Eric at Oxley High School in Tamworth in 1973 or thereabouts. Eric was a lanky 13 year old, very quiet and respectful. He played guitar and was called "Guitar Pickin' Eric". After leaving school, he worked at 2TM, the local radio station. Sadly Eric lost his life in a motor vehicle accident when he was still quite young. I'm planning to perform Slim's famous song at our Senior Citizens monthly concert in Ulverstone Tasmania on November 7
Great quality. Slim is still an absolute legend. Poor guy is suffering dementia now. Will see him again soon while he still remembers us. My Nan is his partner.
Slim lived in Wyong for part of his life, cutler drive. He lived around the corner from me. He had a big van, with the redback painted on the side. Excellent man!
Bless the wonderful Aussie Slim Dusty! You’ll always be so beloved by young and old alike for such a unique and amazing career with truly authentic Aussie songs. Well done matey, ❤️✌️ Australia loves you xxx
Although I was never bitten by a redback I was born in 1987 when in Brisbane Qld had a big redback plague. My mum and dad were always worried about me when I was a toddler because redbacks were always crawling all over my toys. Thank goodness I grew up to be educated about them and lucky here the female redback is only one of two deadly spiders to worry about around Brisbane.(The other the male Sydney Funnel-Web. No, don't let it's common name fool you. It lives in a wide range of Australia, not just Sydney alone.)
It certainly is a good song... I have somewhere in my collection... I'll try to find it and upload it for you. I saw Slim in concert a couple of years ago and I asked him about the song... and he then got up and sang it for me.... great stuff!
Memories, just shared this with my city girl daughter who found a rb spider in the back yard and is not very brave about it. Hoping this cheers her up!
Lol remember this one when I was a little tacker, after seeing a dunny can picture on Facebook this song came to mind so thought I'd listen to it again :)
On this day in 1972 {August 14th} Slim Newton's EP disk, "The Redback On The Toilet Seat", peaked at #5 {for 2 weeks} on the Australian Kent Music Report chart... Does everyone remember The Hawking Brothers? The bass player Gary Newton is Slim Newtons cousin. Music is obviously in the Newton family. Im Gary's daughter and some how I missed out. I'm proud of my heritage and of these 2 men that have contributed so much to Australian country music.
Great song and I have here on the old 45 rpm record that was my nan's there are two other songs to this one this the answer to the red back on the toilet seat and can't remember the other
I do, but it's a scratchy old 45. Would love a clearer version! Many thanks. I have "Something Seems To Tell Me", "redback on the Toilet Seat", "Pint of Water in a Jerry Can".....cant recall the 4th song on the B side - would need to check in my shed :)
The other reason for the separate toilet is because until a connected sewage system.. The toilet was at the back of the block of land, and one would be doing their business into a bucket That would be collected by “ Mr Dunny”… hence the famous Australian Australian song…”Redback on the toilet seat…
+Faded Unicornz - Yep... the female actually kills the male after mating... the males are a lot smaller than the females.... Slim has been chipped a fair few times at the gender error of the spider in his song, but he just laughs it off. - Cheers
+Malcolm May I heard that if you get bitten on the testicles they swell up like melons and they have to keep male patient on special chair with cool water ( not iced) to stop them from exploding.
+Ric Tester Yes, I read about that. The radio station the victim did an interview with should have played this song haha. I guess only those of us who are a certain age will know of this song, though. My grandparents had the recording of this song so that's how I know of it.
