Join George and I as we join the off road driving fun at the Slindon Safari 4x4 day near Chichester in our project Land Rover Freelander 2. Here is the link if you want to join the fun www.4x4driving.co.uk/index.php
Just goes to show how good the Freelander is off road. Great car, driving and fun. Diverse content like this will grow the channel deservedly. 100k+ for sure👌
Was always told the Freelander 2 was not a proper 4x4 off roader.....you've certainly proved otherwise !! Always enjoy your videos, light hearted and good content. Well done !!
You need a winch on the Freelander just in case and tow hooks oh, and keep a sling in the boot. Then you can either rescue someone or, get rescued. I did like the train of cars dragging the P38 out. Great video.
The concept with the Freelander 2 is to keep it as simple as possible so probably no winch but we do need to add some way to facilitate recovery and some basic recovery gear.
That lean at the end of the video, I wish we could have seen the F2 from the outside... I bet it was perched like a bird on 2 wheels! Kudos to you there.
What an awesome video. Simply brilliant. What a "chase" on the other freelander. Simon i told you already, you are becoming a true offroad legend. George is trully blessed to have a Jedi father like yourself. Congrats you guys!!!!
Absolutely brilliant video, used to own a Feelander 1 and you’re absolutely right, apart from the school run it never got its feet dirty, wish we’d been more adventurous now. Thanks guys.
And another great video. Loved the in car commentary too. That was a fair old trek down to Slindon. W have been there numerous times, very varied terrain that caters for all vehicle capabilities. Cheers Non Stick Nick.
It just goes to show what a totally capable car you have ! I was totally amazed how capable the Freelander is with just a basic suspension lift and off road tyres
That's certainly one of the most entertaining off road videos I've seen for some time, particularly as I was expecting a gentle amble round some tracks ! Usually side slopes don't look as steep on video but that one did! Excellent video ( along with all the others) Keep up the good work!
Easy to forget just how capable the F2 is off road, always good to see them being used as they should. Bit of a twitchy bum moment when it was at the extreme angle towards the end, something I remember all to well when I used to help run 4x4 pay and play days!
Looks like damn good fun! Reminds me of when I used to go up to Yarwell for a day of off-roading in my Discovery 2 a few years back. Don't think I'll taking my HST to such extreme angles, looked like a proper brown trouser moment. 😆
After watching this I wish I hadn't got rid of my Freelander 1, had a run of bad luck with it, mainly body damage! Got piss off and outed it, regretted since. Watching this has spurred me on to getting a Freelander 2
The Freelander is much underrated and berated. I had a TD4 that was better on ice than my Disco because of the low centre of gravity - less tendency to slide into the curb. The most surprising was the Panda 4x4 - I ran one of those for Invicta Radio around everything the Defenders were doing
Cameras never do justice for how steep hills are or how big holes etc are. You’ve got a bit more width and length than my Jimny and I still puckered up when you had the FreeLander hesitating on that angle towards the end there! Love it when you guys can get out to places like this. If you ever get a chance to come to Australia we have many places I’m sure you’d love to try out like Swindon.
Great Video, I live just a couple of minutes from Slindon but just not brave enough to take any vehicle there let alone our two week old Defender😳 I have bought some of your accessories for it though😉
I think they will become a popular green lane car in coming years... we drove 2 hours to the site in total comfort - did the course and drove home problem free in a car with 140K miles on the clock ! total cost of the car and modification is less than £2K
When you move the terrain Response dial out of general, in the lcd display in the dash, there will be a display of which way your wheels are facing. Well, at least there is in my 2012 Freelander 2.
I love Slindon Safari, went there a lot in 2018 after I first got my FL2. Dying to go back, I only live 30 minutes away! Definitely let me know when you next plan on going and I'll meet you guys there! I'll bring some cameras and my drone to get some cool shots of some FL2's enjoying the mud 😏 Means I'll have to get some outstanding work done before I next go off roading otherwise I might not make it home 😅
The site is awesome - we had the drone but it was windy and rainy so not ideal for drone flying. I grew up in Southampton and spent a few years in Portsmoouth / Havant ( my first job as at IBM havant ) its so nice around that area and Chichester.
Simon & George, you excelled yourselves on this video...absolutely brilliant! I was sat holding onto the edge of my desk just watching it!! Fantastic stuff!!
I will tell you something , I got a defender 130 with a 6bt. My wife car was the freelander 2 never paid it much attention. I been driving it a bit lately. I am seriously impressed. The only things that let it down are ground clearance and towing capacity ie only 2 ton. I have pulled 3 ton with it and it handled it fine. Seriously impressed with the freelander 2
How brilliant is the Osmo Pocket that George uses for recording from within the car! The in car shots show how you’re bouncing around but the Pocket handles it all with ease.
Just watched it again, really cool entertaining stuff. Have you got any more on camera you edited out you could cobble a part 2 together?. What a brilliant day out that looked.
Really cool video guys! Cheers. Was wondering though, did you during this riding just ‘select the mud&Ruds and/or sand mode’ or did you also ‘shut off the traction control’, with the button beside the selector?? Keep up this great and real reviews!
It is fair to say we have given your spacers a good test - when we have the new 2 post lift fitted in the workshop we will give them a good inspection. But your spacers are one of the best modifications you can make to a Freelander 2 !
@@L663 it was a great video, showing how capable these cars are. They do seem to be very popular round here and it feels like there’s more interest in them generally. Just wish ours was back from the garage... dodgy rear windows and door locks😆
Hi Simon. Was an unexpected pleasure to meet up with you yesterday and have an opportunity to chat. I have sent you my footage from the tour with me and John. I have also put on my channel my veiw of you climbing the hill behind my defender. (can't seem to link it here) Might edit the whole thing later today and add it as well. Thanks again. John.
Hi John nice to meet you too and your very nice Defender. I may compile a bigger video of all the action to some music later. Keep up the good work with the recovery !
Will you make a video on the Freelander 2 how to install a HD reverse camera and install it to the screen? It's a bit hard to find any instructions and the original reverse camera, there are a lot of fakes out there and the quality is often bad.
Here you go Simon/George me and my bro made a video up there little while ago. It's my brothers RU-vid channel...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--gZh0UnHCns.html
@@L663 another you might like to watch..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ekLuVQpk7eM.html great fun up there. Let us know if you're back again would be happy to show you round.
I was there on the weekend with my new P38, first time going off roading and was such good fun! First time making RU-vid videos for 4x4s will hopefully upload it this weekend!
If your unsure of which way the wheels are pointing put a bit of tape around the top of the steering wheel with the wheels set straight before you go off-roading 👍🏻
Also if your looking for more sites to attend. 4x4 without a club near Reading is a pretty good site. Also TV4x4 run off-road events around the Hampshire area.
Great video Simon. Saw you there actually but didn’t realise it was you. Mine was the dark blue Disco 2 that you commented on 4 mins 20 into the vid. X578 JVP. We go to Slindon regularly so give me a shout if you go again and you can follow me and my mate in the red Range Rover Classic which you might also have seen there. Watched loads of your other vids and they are very informative and interesting but your Slindon one was one of your best. You certainly didn’t hold back and the car did well too. So let me know if you go again. Kevin.
Hi Kevin - we probably should get some more graphics on the car really ! We will for sure be back at Slindon and will make sure we get the word out - this was more of a look around but it turned into one of our best days out !
Was very underwealming on that course in comparison to Simon's freelander behind me. Apart from the small bump when the front wheel comes down. Could be due to the wheel base being a bit longer compared to the spacing of the bumps!
The Defender looked a lot more controlled across the articulation section but he was going slower - The Freelander 2 felt composed inside the car - although from outside you can see how much the wheels were off the ground.
I drive a Freelander 1 TD4 and was so pleased to see one in your video. If you get the opportunity to get one to add to your fleet I'd be very impressed.
We do have one ... i got it for £100 and put a new clutch in it....but it has sat around the back for the last 2 years... shall we get it out and have some fun ?
The Freelander 2 has gone up in price massively since they bought this. I think he said it cost them £1500. You’d be lucky to find a roadworthy one now for under £5k.
