Tomorrow I get a 2003 Volvo XC70. It only has 112K miles on it and looks well maintained. I'm a little scared cause I don't know much about cars. Wish me luck.
Keeping track of the Maxiecu output values has been a great addition to the test, thank you! This goes to show how an essentially identical vehicle with different AWD systems treats different wheel slip situations completely differently (along with the limitations of a viscous coupling to sending torque to the rear axle in this case). I know this is a bit off-topic for this channel, but I really wish you were a sort of independent car review channel like Marek to also hear your personal opinions of the vehicles you test.
Thanks! When it comes to personal opinions of the vehicles we test - we don't get these cars for long tests, they belong to private users. We love to ask them about their experiences but we cannot make any serious winter or offroad test drives and that's why... We don't talk in the videos 🙂
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers This is exactly why I think 4x4 tests on rollers deserves a separate review channel where manufacturers send you vehicles for 2-3 weeks to review under all circumstances you see fit.
To get visco out of the last situation you need to pull the parking brake. It will stop thr free wheel giving traction to the one on the hard surface. But other than the last test visco seems to react faster than haldex. Ive got a 2001 XC70 with visco. Im quite impressed what it can do on sandy hills and in the snow
Єрунда.. вся причина не в віско, а в різних системах track/dstc. Модифікація з віско має більш жорсткий режим роботи імітації блокування.. тому машина легше зїзджає при контакті переднього колеса. Але на задню вісь, машина з віско, імітації немає ВЗАГАЛІ. В машини з dstcімітація більо мяка. Тому зїхати одним переднім колесом їй важче. Але в неї є імітація блокування і на задню ось.. тому вона вмії зїзджати за рахунок заднього колеса. Віско має, ЗАВЖДИ, паразитний момент на задню вісь .. тому їй легше на ожеледиці і піску, так як халдекс постійно вмикається-вимикається. Проте на важких грунтах віско передає момент з більшим запізненням, від чого машина може закопатись. Халдекс працює швидше. Халдекс вмикається швидко з ударами, від чого страждає трансмісія. Віско працює мяко - трансмісія страждає менше. Тому, раджу Вам, більш детально розібратись в повному приводі.

Would be awesome if you could do roller test with VW Golf Alltrack (Mk8) vs Audi A4 allroad (Ultra). Or any system versus Golf MK8 4motion. By the way, do you know which gen Haldex is in the new Alltrack 2021? Thanks!
Audi A4 Allroad with Quattro Ultra is already on my channel. If we find Golf, we will test it for sure 🙂 It should have haldex 5 with newest modifications.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers 98-00 V70/ S70 used a haldex VC, 01-03 used the same VC but with a solenoid controlling the clutch packs. There are a few articles out there talking about it. They can be found on FCP and I believe Swedespeed

What is causing the difference? I would assume that traction control is the biggest difference between them rather than distrubution front to back? What are your thoughts?
Traction Control is the clue. It looks that visco version doesn't have it on rear axle (or it is very limited) but overall TC operation is faster than in haldex version.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers What about Volvo TRACS/STC system that would working like electronic LSD? Seems it the VISCO car have it broken. In my V70 AWD VISCO+TRACS works perfectly.
Looks like perhaps the rear diff is open on the '07 and possibly a viscous coupling on the '01? The '07 doesn't transfer torque side to side as well, but is quicker front to rear.
Nice work! Watching this and the Suzuki Ignis test I undertand that visco allways fails giving torque to just a Rear wheel. If you need to add a FWD to the comparison (guess it does not make sense) you can count with mine.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers This is exactly the question I was asking myself. Not easy to answer; visco not transmitting enough torque or traction control not active enough on the rear wheels. Maybe a bit of both.
@@Softroader Considering the fact that there are cars with diff lock on the axle powered by visco, I would say that there is no problem with visco torque. I would rather say that TC intervention is limited to allow visco operation or it is completely off on visco axle.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers I think there is indeed a limitation in the operation of the traction control on the rear axle. This is something that seems to be common, and not only with the viscous couplings. With the P2 platform XC70 , it was announced that "TRACS" traction control was extended to all 4 wheels (it only worked on the front wheels on the P80 platform) to replace the Eaton G80 self-locking differential.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers but @soft: you mean front or read diff not central one, right? That's the point, rear wheels on a Central Differential with an open rear diff and no traction control slips. A FWD or RWD with visco, torsen or any kind of Limited Slip Diff won't do that thing the same wat it won't happen with a efficent electronic traction control. Another point is that visco is... Let's say unpredictible, and not as efficent as other systems, you can't determine how much torque goes to the rear axle, it is afected by too many external.factors as: if it's the last test done overheating, the maintenance done to the diff... So it would be needed to do more tests to be 100% sure why it happens and even know more data, in example in the case of the Volvo if stc or dstc also has sensors in the rear wheels to ensure a better traction.
Is it ok to run the engine a long time on rollers. I see for the visco volvo in the last test that the front tires are spinning at different speed. So the front diff is working. I am asking this because i know that we need to match tires on a 4x4 car otherwise you will damage the diff. So is it ok to let it spin like in the last the for the visco volvo?
Wheels are always spinning at different speed until the diff is locked. The question is how big the difference is. It is not recommended to spin it with high difference for a long time but on rollers there's very low load so nothing can happen.
What we see here, is that the average driver, is not going to notice any difference in practice. We have an xc70 2005. Has it been great on long drives - absolutely. Has the AWD helped - absolutely. Is it an off road vehicle - no. If you find yourself in a situation where only 1 wheel has traction, then you have already messed up, and should not be there. Is the AWD going to save you - probably not.
I have a 2006 XC70 and with good snow tires it is unstoppable. Did the Coquihalla Pass in a blizzard. People were turning back. Trucks were putting on chains. My XC70 got me through. It wasn't a cake walk but is wasn't a struggle. Heard the traction control working quite a bit. It just kept going and was easy to control. I encountered every kind of winter treachery on that winter drive from Vancouver to Winnipeg and it was rock solid. Passed lots of cars and trucks in the ditches.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers On the hoist, my xc70 spins all wheels, but the drivers rear hesitates and is the last to spin. Was told by my mechanic that I only have 2wd because my DEM was not communicating. Does having the vehicle on the ground change things?
@@jonjackson1901If it's haldex then communication is responsible for powering rear axle, not the wheels. If one wheel doesn't spin then something is resisting, like bearing, brake etc.
W wersji z wisko, kontrola trakcji reaguje szybciej, ale układ awd jako całość reaguje wolniej i przekazuje mniej momentu na tył. Możliwe też, że przy wisko, kontrola trakcji działa tylko na osi przedniej.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers I can say that my 2006 doesn't have does problems to get away. I have tried with summer tires, än 50 centimeter sno within out any problem.
@@leifnatfors8600 If you have the same grip (like snow) under each wheel then it's completely different situation. In this test we simulate different grip and that's how the system handles it - and it does it very good.
