This video shows how I prepare slip for slip trailing by sieving it, then I use a red bulb syringe slip trailer to apply the slip. (If you don't have clay slip in a bucket from throwing, just put some in a blender with water to make it into a milkshake or smoothie consistency.) Slip trailing can be done with many different tools, and I like the two trailers I show in the video. Old mustard and ketchup squeeze bottles, hair color applicator bottles, or even a ziplock bag with the corner cut off all work great!
The red bulb slip trailer is available from Highwater Clays here:
hhighwaterclays.com/products/r...
The Xiem Slip trailer is available from many retailers, including my local one I usually patronize- Cornelle Studio Supply:
cornellstudiosupply.com/produc...
The MudTools ribs are my favorite ribs- here I use the red one to get the slip through the sieve. Here is a link to the mudtools ribs:
www.mudtools.com/product/shape...
And, here are a couple of links for the Tailsman Test Sieve:

or for other sizes: www.axner.com/talisman-test-si...
Slip can be applied in many various thicknesses or consistencies. Similar to icing in application. You could even use a bag with a decorating tip! If you use the same clay body for the slip, you shouldn't have any problems! I usually apply my slip trailing while the form is leatherhard. If you apply it while the form is bone dry, sometimes you may have some chipping off of the trailed portions.
The clay body I am using is Laguna B-mix with grog, mid-fire cone 5/6.

I am a high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. Mason is the largest high school in the state of Ohio. I have been teaching high school ceramics for 18 years now, and I love it! I began making videos for my students several years ago to help them with their projects. I was amazed and delighted that they have reached a much larger audience beyond my students!

I'm one of the everyone else who wants to learn. I'm almost 64 and working with clay collected from the brook in VT. I learned how to work with this type of clay many years ago but quit. So I'm learning even more from you now, thanks for sharing ♥️

I just wanted to let you know how great your videos are. I am almost 82. I have followed you with the virus. I have a new wheel I have not used. I am going down and throw. I also wondered where you got the over the top vent you have. Love your videos

love your videos. A easier and cheaper "syringe" method would be a pastry bag, especially with large classes

@@KaransPotsAndGlass What a great idea. Since I buy my own supplies, I am always open to new ways of getting what we need on a budget. I also go to the dollar tree and get their face sponges (2 per pack) and they work perfectly so instead of spending 5-6.00 for one sponge, I can get 6-8 for the same price. Tx

Do you have a slip recipe, Im just starting out and doing molds. By the way you are a wonderful teacher. I love your videos.

Hi Barb- thanks for the kind words! No, I don’t have a slip recipe for molds as I don’t teach casting- just hand building and wheel throwing!

Nice video! I checked the link to the red bulb syringe but it no longer works...do they still make it? The xiem syringe is quite expensive

Hi, i am using normal plastic bottle, but the slip is not coming out of the bottle, please tell me where i am going wrong

I would #1 make sure the slip is liquid enough. Too thick, and it will be difficult to squeeze through. #2 Make sure it has been sieved. #3 Check to see if you have a clog... I often ream my tip with a paperclip or pin. I hope that helps!

That's a great idea, Rebecka! No, I haven't- but that's just because I already have the sieve! If you try it, let me know how the pantyhose work!

What would the formula be if you're making slip from scratch..........?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 лет назад
Well, the slip must be compatible with the claybody to which you intend to apply it. That is why I use the same claybody, just liquified and sieved. If you are making your slip from scratch, then I assume you are making your claybody from scratch?

Do you soak your clay in water to make slip? Or is slip something that comes from a pottery supply?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 лет назад
Lynnette DeBell - if I don’t have a slip bucket with slip from throwing- then I just put some in a dedicated blender and mix it with water. I’ve never found a need to add anything else when I use the same clay body! :)
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 лет назад
Hi Lynnette- it is my clay body just watered down. What I am using is a result of my throwing. Just the slip in my throwing bucket... but you can also make it by placing clay and water in a blender and blending it to a milkshake consistency!

so.thats mean.. slip from throwing mixed with slip trailing industry?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 года назад
I don’t use commercial slip- I just make my own from watered down clay which I sieve to remove grog. Slip for slip casting is different. Since I don’t slip cast with my students, I don’t make that... it requires some additives.

The video is called "From MAKING Slip to Application" but you haven't show us how to MAKE the slip. You immediately say, "this was the slip that was in my slip bucket." I do like most of your videos, but this one falls short.
@KaransPotsAndGlass

Sorry Jennifer! You’re right! If I don’t have slip in my slip bucket, I just put water in clay in a blender! I guess I was trying to emphasize the “making slip” part was by putting it through a sieve to get out grog! Sorry for any confusion!!! I don’t have a blender in my studio, but I do have one at school.
