In this video, I show the basics of slip trailing application. Off camera, I prepared my slip by blending some of the clay body I normally use in a blender, then sieved the pudding-like slip to remove the grog from my clay. (I didn't want it to clog the tip of my bulb syringe) In this video I was unable to show the fired results because one of my children knocked over a shelf where all of these were stored and they broke.
Experiment and have fun. After all, if the slip areas don’t look the way you want them, you can wipe them off while still wet!

great video - just one small point if you make your slip just slightly wetter than it currently is you won't get those sharp ends happening. Also i find work a lower angle helps maintain the flow better and gives more of natural feel to the slip trailing. I practiced for ages on oranges and waxed paper before i progressed onto pots.

susan a. Sebastian Hi Susan- I will attempt to add a video sometime showing these techniques... but, usually when I shoot a video, it is in order to get it ready to present to my students, usually within 24 or 48 hours... and I don't have sufficient time to finish a form I am demonstrating. :-) And, I had an unfortunate circumstance in this particular case, in that although I had planned to finish these and show the finished product, one of my children accidentally knocked over my shelf of finished fired slip trailed pots in my studio... breaking them! :-(

You can buy a cake stand at a craft store that does the same job. It spins in either direction and you can place it up on a book or other object so its higher to you.

Lovely! I’m new to slip trailing and have issues with cracking. Any advice on avoiding that? Thanks!
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 года назад
Make sure the clay is not too dry when applying. If the clay has already started shrinking much, and then you put wet slip on, when the slip shrinks it will shrink more than the Clay possibly can, resulting in cracking!

Hi Karan. I'm new to slip trailing and have a question. I've seen where people add glaze to their slip and then do the slip trailing. How do you do that? What proportions, etc?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 9 лет назад
Hi Steven! I actually never add glaze to mine... I usually just pigment a slip with stains or oxides. (Usually just mason stains though) I don't have a proportion as a rule, I just tint the slip until I have the intensity I desire. I'd fire a sample, to make sure the fired slip looks the way I want it before doing a big piece! I hope that helps! Perhaps some people add a glaze to the slip- I just don't have any personal experience with that! :-)

When slip trailing, how dry does your clay have to be? Also, how does trimming work with slip trailing?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 8 лет назад
+sabatron ™ I would always have the piece trimmed before slip trailing to prevent damage. Also, the clay would typically be a slightly dry-ish leatherhard. If it gets too dry, the slip may just release and crack off. Let me know if you have any more questions!

I love your work- may I ask where you buy those bulb syringes?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 9 лет назад
Mary O'Sullivan Hi Mary!!! The bulb syringes I usually purchase from Highwater Clays... here is a link: www.highwaterclays.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=4095&ParentCat=249 But, recently, I discovered another type of bulb syringe I like even better, but it is more expensive... but made more durable than the red ones. It comes with several tips of various diameter! Here is a link for that one... (From my favorite local supplier!) cornellstudiosupply.com/shop/xiem-3oz-precision-applicator/ They both work wonderfully for glaze application too- you could see that in my glazing the plates or glazing the platters videos! :-) Let me know if you have any more questions! :-)
@theeniem
@theeniem 8 лет назад
+KaransPotsAndGlass Please let us know what size/color tip you are using with the Xiem bulb? I'd like to know which tips to order (already have the bulb and some too-small tips). Many thanks for all your clear and helpful videos!
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 8 лет назад
When I use the Xiem bulb, if slip trailing, I use the biggest one- the 14 gauge (green). Also, when I make my slip for slip trailing, I run the slip through a sieve to prepare it to remove the particles of grog that are in my clay body, or the tip would clog. I hope this helps! The red bulb syringes have a tip that I think is comparable to the 14 gauge, but that one is quite simply a needle for inflating balls that I grind the tip down on to remove the side hole. I hope that gives some clarification! Let me know if I can help any more! :-)

I have a questions please. Do you apply it to a leather-hard piece?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 3 года назад
Yes! Leather hard or a slightly wet leather hard- once it gets to a dry leatherhard the shrinking gets trickier!!
@Eaglebusa

Hi Pat- no sorry... that was the first time I used a new camera for filming, and found the microphone just had too much white noise! Now I have an auxiliary microphone to avoid that! I've gone through about four different cameras... and feel like I finally have one I like! ;-)
@meenusubrahmanian5692
@meenusubrahmanian5692 Год назад
The slip trailing should be done on leather hard clay body?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Год назад
Yes- as that way the slip will be able to shrink at the same time with the shrinking clay. Putting slip on bone dry clay will often/sometimes result in the slip popping off when it dries, as the pot itself would already be done shrinking.

hi Karan, You only use WATER for slip ? İt is looking sticky.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 9 лет назад
+Doğa Çam Hi Doga- no- that slip is clay that I put in a blender with water. I mix it in my blender until it is about the consistency of a milkshake. Another way is to use the thick slip which has sat for a while in my throwing water bucket! :) I do use only water for slip when attaching items sometimes though! But in the case of slip trailing... I just use blended up clay and water! :)

Please add captions/subtitles to your videos
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 года назад
That is a setting each person controls in their own playback on many of my videos. In the settings, (the gear icon) when you are playing a video, you can select subtitles- autogenerate in English to be on or off. It doesn't work on all videos, but that is pretty good for many. I am a full time high school teacher who doesn't have time to type up captions... but viewers can always contribute to caption videos if they want! I did just type up captions on that video, but that is about the only one I will have a chance to do! I hope that helps!

Sorry, I speed up those videos, or they would take forever! And, lol- yes, I normally wouldn't hold an unfired mug by a handle, but due to the wet slip on the outside, I couldn't hold it the way I normally do! (I wouldn't do it if it were bone dry... but that leatherhard state, I know that particular clay body is pretty stable! :)
