Does most of your excess slip drain out while the mold is upside down on the slip table for that short time? I let mine drain for much longer and am now rethinking that approach!
It really depends on a few things. My viscosity is low enough that it all runs out pretty fast. But I also like leaving a little to fill the bottom out a bit more smooth
I don't know the brand you have but I have been mixing my own porcelain slip for 20+ years. I mix 15 gallons or about 125 pounds of water with 300 pounds of slip powder. Between 41 and 42% by weight. I use sodium silicate as my defloculant. The key is not to add too much water. That is not what makes your slip pourable. It is the defloculant that adjusts the liquidity. I add the sodium silicate after mixing wet and dry together and dribble in small amounts, little doses of water and sodium silicate and refer to this, when I'm showing others, as when the magic happens. Watching the change from a gluggy porridge to a thin whispy liquid with very little added water is amazing. Good luck and happy pouring. Don't forget, weigh your water. It makes all the difference. Trust the ratio.
