No fake backing tracks, no in ear monitors, no auto-tune. Real people playing real live music, a decade into just being an oldies act, yet still 100 times better than any of garbage live acts of today.
It's the best version of this song I've heard. The Fendertones have the 2nd best. What makes you think it's too fast? What, do you prefer the shitty Kingston Trio's lame version?
I can't seem to stop watching this version. Dennis on the drums, pushing the tempo. Nobody fell behind, and they absolutely killed it! Mike just couldn't figure out that they were a rock band.
@@maakeklein4073I think he means hard on Carl's voice in the sense of trying to keep up with Dennis's tempo. He just manages to stay the right side of tanking it, but it should have been just a tiny bit slower.
Steve Melleby, Right on bro. This is my favorite B/Bs video. Because in only 3 more years Dennis would drown. Denny is so animated here. Always played like he meant it. Total absorption in his music. While every Wilson boy had that spirit? Dennis was the REAL Beach Boy.
This is a great song and the best version I have ever heard. As others have said, Denis rocked those drums and basically challenged his band mates to meet his tempo.
In the B section of the chorus I cant even comprehend whats going on with the vocals. Its beyond amazing, only a genius thinking in more harmonies than humanly possible could arrange that. The greatest band of all time!
And all of it lives in Brian's mind. He is a national treasure, and a musical genius. And, he was born with just one ear drum. He's never heard anything in stereo. Even more remarkable...
How can you possibly be serious? "Beyond amazing!" "Genius thinking!" "More than humanly possible!" None of that is true. beach Boys harmonies are quite good, but they conform to well established musical theory that hs been understood by serious musicians for centuries and exemplified over and over.
This song means so much to me. About a year and a half ago my aunt suffered a cardiac arrest and her brain went without oxygen for several minutes. They managed to resuscitate her but the damage had been done and she was forced to be a prisoner in her own body for a year while suffering full body cramps and spasms. I remember visiting her in the hospital and they had cd's with her favorite music playing and this song happened to be her favorite. I never knew that about her before it was too la
That's actually true! One of the few instances that Mike Love didn't act like a total jackass. Although his looking through the telescope with his hands was kind of douchey. But mild for Mike.
They were a tight money making concert band in these years, and the presence of a somewhat de-catatonicized Brian in the mix didn't hurt the presentation. I think you can see/hear how hot they thought they sounded.
Yet somehow Carl was the greatest singer in the band by an 84 Reagan type landslide. Brian sounded like an American Idol first round reject here as he did in virtually ever performance since the 60's. I can't fucking stand Mike Love but he still sounds good and Al Jardine is easily the greatest remaining Beach Boy. Not even close. Even Al's son, Matt, puts Brian to absolute shame these days.
@@reneep9972 These days, 2018, Brian is 76 years old. Doesn't matter if he's clean and sober, father time robs everyone of their powers. I do realize Brian was 38 in this video and had already lost his voice.
Several observations: If you read or know anything of their history together, it amazing they are still alive and able to be on the same stage with one another. I worked back stage security back in the late 70's and met them all over the years, and it's doubly amazing Brian can still form sentences after the way he has cooked his brain. This particular song is so magnetic, hypnotizing, and wickedly sad on so many levels, that it is absolutely astounding.
@Joe M You're the dick, jumping on the bandwagon because some goon thinks its great drumming. It's good drumming, but nothing special for a seasoned pro.
HELL YEAH! Dennis the best part of this song. Carl's singing was second best. Amazing performance by all of them except for the vastly overrated Brian.
@@reneep9972 They wouldn't have been popular if it wasn't for the vastly "overrated" Brian Wilson. Brian was the one who wrote and produced the sounds HE WANTED. Hardly "overrated" What he had was a gift from GOD !
Amazing good. The Beach Boys somehow, despite themselves, always could pull it together. I love Brian's voice in the 70's and 80's, all sweet and cigarette ravaged but never for a moment not perfect. And Dennis somehow pulling it out of what must have been a decade of drug haze, and even Mike, Mike Love weirdo as weirdo can be, sounds just brilliant and perfect. The boys always managed some kind of sublime, creative ecstasy. They're the one real American folk band.
Dennis Wilson has to be one of the most underrated drummers of all time. I was looking through Rolling Stones' list of greatest drummers and I don't believe he even made the list. This performance, among others, proves that Dennis wasn't just a clubber. The man had technique, rhythm, and impeccable timing. RIP Dennis and Carl as well
I love how Carl looks at Brian and moves as Brian sings the word "town" at 0:12, just as Dennis slams the drums. As musical director, Carl felt every beat and listened to every note. Brothers in perfect time with one another.
It was always in my head that Mike's voice or Brian's falsetto were the defining part of the Beach Boys. 0:55 though, it made me realize that it's probably Al Jardine. In every song, he usually had the interesting/unusual tenor harmony that stood out and made their vocal harmonies so unique.
Agreed Diane. Carl's voice was God's voice in the flesh and Al Jardine was second best. Never understood why Brian gets so much credit. Great writer, average singer. Dennis was a witch on the drums! What a great performance.
@@reneep9972 Brian's voice was the most versatile. Not always the best, but he couls take up a baritone or a strong falsetto lead with ease. He may not have had the voice that everyone wanted to hear, but he had range.
Just watched a video of them doing this song at the studio in Capital Records not long ago, still sounding great 30 years later!! I soooo wanted to see these guys in concert when they came to my area... was gonna get backstage passes, meet&greet, the whole package.. couldn't get anyone to go with me :(
I was at this concert. Its funny how time plays tricks on the memory. Brian was helped onstage, and it seemed his contribution was minimal, however as I watched this I was amazed how together he was. This was an amazing performance, by one of the best bands in history. Apart from Denis upping the tempo, and everybody having to keep up, its a classic.
The Beach Boys had been touring for years while Brian Wilson stayed at home collecting royalty checks. If you didn't know, there was a little resentment over that. Dennis was probably the coolest Wilson brother but he was also a drug user and had a hard time holding tempo. This is an old Jamaican song and after this, my favorite Beach Boys song is Sail On Sailor.
@@DummyYEEEAAHHHHH I think he did it more to piss off Mike Love , who he didn’t get on with . The Wilson’s were the real talent , wrote all the classics yet Love is still touring today .,
I just watched this for the first time after recently getting back into the Beach Boys and I think it's the best overall concert I've seen of theirs. They were firing on all cylinders that night. Would loved to have been there. So good!
Bullshit Andrew. Dennis was an absolute fucking witch on the drums! HOLY SHIT that was unbelievable. High as a kite, probably. Who the hell cares? This is possibly the best rendition of Sloop John B ever. Makes the Kingston Trio's version seem like a fresh pile of horseshit.
I was at this concert. wow, almost 40 years ago. Didnt know it then, but it was the last time this original line up played together. Denis was in fine form. I didnt expect Brian to show, but he did. One of the greats, The Beach boys..
Saw them numerous times and met the brothers when I was a kid (around '65). My neighbor was their insurance agent and they had come over to his house to do some business. I was in the pool with a bunch of other kids and when they came out we all got to meet them. Man, it's only recently that I realize how special that time was. Looking around today, I'm feeling a deep melancholy for those days.
I've seen the BB several times and they were great each time. As for the complaints I've read here, I don't understand it. This band is one the greatest of all time...period. Who cares they aren't perfect live...who the he'll is? Personally I think this is a great performance and more than worthy of praise.
@@magicmulder Some people are too damn hard to please. I listen to music of several recording artists like Elvis and I actually prefer some of his live recordings over the studio recordings like blue suede shoes, Don’t, and Love me tender. The only recording artists that have better studio recordings than live recordings are the doors and Van Halen.
This is one of those songs I can binge-listen too. And I have for 55 years. If I had a bitcoin for every time I've listened to it I'd be able to fix the national debt.
Dennis was brilliant and was capable of so much thus the production of his own album! Very sad that his amazing talent and creativity was not fully realised with Dennis tragically drowning...
Late. I wish I could have gotten the opportunity to share this music with her. She's in a Better place now and it comforts me to hear this song. All she wanted was to go home and finally she got to pass away in her own home with her family by her side. This song will always remind me of that.
