In the early 70s I worked for a Sun Oil company garage in Tulsa. It was the shop my dad had retired from. I once was working on a 1960s era Chevy 6 cylinder. Nothing special, I was to replace a leaky valve cover gasket, replace spark plugs, points and condenser. Someone walked by the front of the truck, saw me and informed me the shop foreman was looking for me. He said he’d tell the boss where I was. Where was I? I was avoiding leaning over the fender to do the work. I was inside the engine bay standing on the floor with everything I needed to work on within easy reach. My needed tools and parts on a tray balanced between the radiator and the right fender. Those days of having under hood space have been gone for years. The boss laughed at me and said I was the only one in the shop skinny enough to do that. Yes, those days are gone too.

Ran into s a similar problem on a Mercedes in the 60's. There was no way to reroute the hoses to keep them from rubbing. I ended up taking a larger diameter piece of hose, splitting it and putting it around the two hoses at the rubbing point. Mercedes came out with a fix, consisting of two split pieces of hose to mount over the hoses where they rubbed. An official repair that duplicated what I thought of on my own.

They are probably “engineers “ who work on a production line doing the same job over and over Ray has multiple skills and adapts to the job in hand.his channel is for entertainment it’s not an instructional video go Ray 👍🇬🇧

Setting different and other gearboxes is an exercise in patience and sometimes futility. Put it together, check it, take it apart, wash rinse repeat. The whole process is dull and repetitive and would require a 6 part series. I reassembled a three cylinder Suzuki once that had been completely disassembled. Including the trans. I didn't have to shim anything but there was 147 different ways to put the gear train back together and only 1 that was right.

Going from a 90s chevy truck when I was a teen in which I did an engine in cam swap to what cars are now, I have made respect for mechanics. The simplest things are amplified with the addition of electronics/sensors/etc. I was scared to even do minor maintenance on my newer cars, you videos helped me grow to do more. It is all about patience and common sense (the only thing I still have no idea about is differential and transmission work)

Ray fussing with that stress relief bracket reminds me when I was younger working on my buddies 79 Camaro. We changed the exhaust and the hanger in the middle was missing the mount. I informed him he needed to replace it or the pipe will break. He said he would... Well he didn't, so the only thing holding the new exhaust was the front and the rear hanger. You know where this is going. The stress of the road bumps and so forth broke that thing in half. So yep, the designers usually know what they need to accomplish.

I think it's great that the OEM's have gone to securing fluid lines with pop in fittings held by actual bolts, instead of threaded in fittings. It really reduces the chances of crossed threads and twisted up tubing.

To help get air out turn to stop and bounce steering off the stops about 5 times both ways, it's a pressure spike which helps push the air out, or can vacuum out using a external reservoir

I've had paint cans do that. The plastic tube that is part of the can, not the nozzle, broke off. Sadly, I know of no fix for that. :(

some 12 years ago I had an '88 Taurus wagon that I think my wife loved way more than the dog and me combined .... power steering line was leaking, 'and' the PS pump had been whining for a long time. I was for junking the car due to busted bumper covers, cracked light lenses, etc. the wife insisted on repairs, so I took it to the garage and had the mechanical repairs done while I froze my a$$ off (winter in Missouri!) scrounging around the pick-a-part rounding up body parts which I installed on her car. wound up spending around $1000 fixing up her baby which was at best maybe a $400 car at the time. happy wife, happy life, right? ..... and life goes on. 😁

I believe the “extra” ground wire is the battery charge signal to the ecm. It is how the ecm monitors the battery state of charge, buy looking at the current return.

As an engineer, I've said this before.... About clamps and clips and such. EVERY SINGLE CLAMP CLIP AND SCREW is there for a reason. If they can save a penny on building a car, they will. Look at the diagnostic connector - or ANY connector for that matter. They do not populate pins they do not use.... to save a couple of pennies. A penny saved over 200,000 cars is $2000. Do that all over a vehicle and it becomes $250,000 saved on a build run.... over pennies saved per unit. For instance, a diagnostic connector is usually missing 10 or more pins - at about 2 cent a piece. a HUGE savings just there. Another saving measure - they changed the diagnostic connector in the late 90's so it uses a capture clip and a screw to mount it, rather than 2 screws. they saved probably a million dollars a year over that simple design change over all the vehicles they made per year. By deleting ONE screw. It is a constant battle between the engineers and the bean counters in the front office. If it is not needed for the vehicle, it is omitted. A penny per unit is a HUGE savings on a vehicle run, so if they can delete it, they will. We had a former GM engineer at our company. Our product runs were more specialized, maybe 5,000 a year. A penny saved on a design is not as critical, yet he would make penny saved design decisions that would bite us in the a$$ later instead of designing for the future. We always had to remind him in meetings that we were not making 250,000 units, and a penny in the design is not a big deal if it will save us headaches $$$$$$ (and hence money) later.

The same thing goes for time. A design change that takes a minute longer than before is a HUGE labor cost. I had another engineer that would come in the middle of my production runs and say... I found an oopsie in the design, we will need to add this modification to the entire run. It only takes a minute to complete. I would loudly sigh and say REALLY?!?!?!?!?!?! him: but but, its only a minute.... I would think for a moment and say - I have 2500 units to make in this run - 2500 * one minute is 2500 minutes plus set up and break down, moving units in and out of the work station, so thats 2 minutes per if we are lucky. So thats roughly 84 hours...... divide that by 8 ------- You just cost me 11 man hour days in my production run, over your minute....If I put 3 people on it, it will cost us 4 days extra real time days for this run.....SIGH, I'll go tell the boss it will take 4 more extra days to get this run out.....
